Boost Your Immunity Naturally with Elderberry

Battling a serious disease, such as cancer, is sometimes a matter of weighing the odds: potent, life-saving treatments may come with their own set of risks and side effects. A bout of chemotherapy or radiation may leave the body in a weakened state, with a compromised immune system. But natural supplements and health-giving extracts, such as those made with European Elderberry (Sambucus nigra), are giving new hope in the fight to return to health. Elderberry’s antibacterial and antiviral power may help shift the balance back to wellness faster, giving the immune system a much-needed boost against bacterial and viral infections.

A natural immune booster

Elderberry has long been known to posess healing and strengthening powers. Our modern ability to concentrate and standardize health-giving fruits into different forms is giving elderberry even greater effectiveness. Now researchers are finding that doses of concentrated elderberry extract may help return strength back to the immune system, and to overall health, as the body works to recover.

Scientists have discovered that concentrated elderberry extract not only counter both bacterial and viral infection, but also support overall health by reducing oxidative stress throughout the body. Natural plant pigments known as anthocyanins — powerful anti-oxidants found in abundance in dark-colored (and therefore heavily pigmented) elderberries — are among the active ingredients.

A natural antibacterial

Among the toughest infections facing those with diminished immune systems are bacterial infections that affect the respiratory system. That was the focus of yet another series of studies into elderberry’s potential. The anthocyanins in elderberry were found to kill a range of bacteria, particularly those related to respiratory infections.

Research conducted in Germany found that an elderberry formula called Rubini, created using Iprona AG´s proprietary membrane enrichment technology, was particularly effective in this regard, and could potentially function as a valuable alternative treatment. Similarly, a study in Ireland found that elderberry was a potentially powerful weapon against the dangerous antibiotic-resistant bacteria Staphylococcus aureus.

A potent antiviral

Recent research on elderberry’s antiviral power found that the anthocyanins in concentrated elderberry extract form a bond with the influenza virus H1N1 (swine flu). This bond thwarts the virus’ ability to infect new cells. A study in Japan found that concentrated elderberry juice is a potent double weapon against influenza infection: it suppresses the replication of the Influenza A virus, and also increases the level of antibodies in the blood. The same study also showed that elderberry stimulates the immune response, which prevents further viral infection.

Still more research found that the anthocyanins in elderberry extract may have the ability to fight the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). The anthocyanins blocked viral reproduction by bonding with HIV, thus preventing it from infecting new cells. The researchers deem this a promising starting point in the quest for safe and reliable co-therapies, and a bright possibility for those who are HIV-1-positive.

On many fronts, elderberry has therapeutic, health giving promise. Whether as a supportive treatment against colds and influenza, or a way to help strengthen the blood and increase vitality, it’s another example of the incredible power of nature to help us heal.

See Where Your Body Accumulates The Most Fat And How To Get Rid Of It

Obesity is caused by many different factors. Check out the group you belong according to your lifestyle and what you can do to solve the problem.

1. Food as a cause of obesity

This type is the most typical type of obesity in the world. It is caused by consuming excessive amount of sugar and fatty food. To get rid of excess fat, you should exercise at least 30 minutes every day.

2. Stress as a cause of obesity

This type of obesity is induced by anxiety, depression and stress. People suffering from this form of obesity usually kill their depression with sweets. In order to lose weight these people should work on their self control and never reach for food as a cure for depression or stress

3. Gluten caused obesity

This type is generally found in women in menopause, adolescence or hormonal imbalance. It is relevant to avoid long sitting, alcohol and cigarettes, and to exercise with weights.

4. Slow metabolism as a cause of obesity

People suffering from this type of obesity feel their stomach like a bloated balloon. Those people that consume alcohol or have problems with breathing are even more affected. You should cut the alcohol and focus on nutrition rich in fruits and vegetables.

5. Bad circulation as a cause of obesity

This is basically a genetically inherited type of obesity, but it can also develop during pregnancy and in individuals who are prone to leg swelling. The solution of this problem is to be active or to start performing some exercise like climbing stairs or running.

6. Physical inactivity as a cause of obesity

All modern people are affected by this type of obesity due to their sitting jobs where they have to sit 8 and maybe more hours every day. You need to create a good workout plan where your body will be active for at least 3 times a week in order to fight weight gain.

Correct Poor Eyesight Naturally With These Tips

Of all the things that we take for granted every day, our eyesight is one of the most devastating to lose. Some people think that developing cataracts, macular degeneration, dryness of the eyes, or any other eye concerns is inevitable because it is just part of the aging process.

The truth is, poor diet and less than optimal lifestyle choices contribute to the loss of eyesight more than aging does. By adopting a healthier regimen and eating a plethora of nutrient-rich foods, protecting the eyes, and even healing of the eyes, is plausible.

Dark leafy greens, carrots, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, yellow peppers and egg yolks contain potent antioxidants like beta-carotene, zeaxanthin and lutein — which defend against age-related blindness resulting from macular degeneration. Drinking freshly pressed carrot juice, at least twice per day, is an excellent habit that keeps eye problems at bay.

Foods high in sulfur, lecithin and cysteine are another helpful addition to the diet. Examples include garlic, onions, shallots, leeks, tree nuts, dairy, coconut and legumes. These edibles fortify the lens of your eye, thereby reducing the risk of cataracts.

Blueberries, black currant, acai and goji berries are chock-full of anthocyanin — a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory that substantially improves eye health.

Coldwater fish like salmon, sardines and mackerel provide abundant essential fatty acids that help support cell membranes, which in turn, encourages sharp vision.

Additionally, vitamins C and E, along with the minerals zinc and copper, are useful in maintaining healthy eyesight. Citrus fruits, broccoli and Brussels sprouts are good sources of vitamin C, while tree nuts (especially almonds) are high in vitamin E and copper. Pastured beef, wild game and eggs are rich in zinc.

Exercises

Warm your eyes.
Rub your palms together to create heat, and then place them against your eyes for five seconds. Repeat this three times.

Roll your eyes.
Start by looking up and then slowly circle 10 times clockwise and 10 times counterclockwise.

Focus.
Hold a pen at arm’s length, focus your eyes on it, and slowly bring the pen closer until it’s about 6 inches away from your nose. Then slowly move it back, keeping your eyes focused on the pen, 10 times in all.

Massage your temples.
Using your thumb knuckles, massage your temples in small circles, 20 times in one direction and 20 in the other. Repeat the same actions above the mid-point of the eyebrows at the forehead, then below the eyes on both sides of the bridge of the nose.

23 Gross Things That Are Actually Good for You

Foods, therapies, creepy crawlers, germs, and other things that may leave you a little nauseated: We’ve compiled a list of disturbing and gross things that are actually kind of good for you! This is not for the faint of heart. Please use the proper precautions before reading the following list.

Vomit:
We know you know that vomit is actually a good thing. Vomit is your body’s way of purging what it considers potentially dangerous substances. From stomach flu to overconsumption of alcohol, be thankful to your body for getting rid of what doesn’t belong.

Maggot therapy:
In 2004, the FDA approved the use of maggots for wound healing purposes. The maggots are placed into an open wound where they clean the dead tissue. No worries, the maggots are disinfected before use.

Creepy crawlers on your skin:
You can’t see them, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t there. Tiny germs and bacteria on your skin are responsible for removing dead skin cells and some of them, Staphylococcus epidermidis, actually help in preventing more dangerous bacteria from settling on your skin.

Fish testicles with semen:
Also called “shirako.” Yes, male fish have testicles inside their bodies. Shirako are used in soups and sushi for their omega-3s.

Mucus:
Or as we like to call it, snot! A product of your nose, snot traps all kinds of intruders from the outside world and prevents them from entering your body. Think pollen, soot, ash, sand, tiny pieces of metal and dust. Some of these pollutants may cause inflammation, which leads to a runny nose or postnasal drip.

Blood sausage:
It is no longer popular with most of us, but ask the generations before you, and they’ll likely tell you that blood sausage was a regular item on their menu. What’s so good about it? It’s full of protein, zinc, iron and gelatin.

Farting and burping:
It’s good for you! During the digestive process, the body produces gas, and where does it go? To the nearest exit! It may sound and smell unpleasant, but it’s absolutely necessary to keep us from exploding. If you’re more prone to gas, you may consider backing off on gas-producing foods like broccoli, onions, and cabbage.

Beef brains:
They may not be easy on the eyes, but they are loaded with B12, iron, vitamin C and niacin. So if the hunter-gatherer lifestyle is right up your alley, you may want to cook up some beef brains.

Caterpillars and grasshoppers:
A good source of protein and quite a delicacy in some parts of the world. Just be careful before you fry up your first batch of caterpillars. Not all of them are safe for human consumption.

Cottage cheese:
The food you love to hate for its taste and consistency is actually a good source of non-meat protein and curbs hunger for several hours.

Sweat:
Don’t you love the scent of babies? Even young children up to the age of around 12 don’t stink as much as adults do. That’s because their sweat glands aren’t active yet. Sweat is necessary to cool off the body when you are hot. Sweat by itself is actually not smelly. Certain foods like curry and onions, plus some bacteria on your skin, make sweat smelly.

Calf’s liver:
A superfood that is full of protein, vitamin A, vitamins B6 and B12, folate, riboflavin, niacin, betaine, and a number of minerals, including selenium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, iron and calcium. If you can’t stomach calf’s liver as is, try to hide it in burgers, paté, or freeze it in pill capsules.

Pus:
Your body’s response to infection is to send an army of soldiers, or white blood cells, to fight the infection. The more of these white blood cells die in battle, the more pus will show up at the surface.

Poop:
It’s not just a way for your body to eliminate unnecessary waste, it’s also an indicator of your health for you to check. Small, hard pebbles indicate dehydration, while thin poop and diarrhea are potential signs of illness or a malfunctioning gallbladder. Poop should be formed like a sausage and should be easily eliminated from the body.

Moose fat and ground fish ice-cream:
Yes, we realize that’s a bit of a stretch for us Westerners. But we’re thinking that if the Inuits do it and are perfectly healthy, it can’t be bad for us either, right? Add in berries for a pleasant flavor, and you have a great and healthy recipe full of protein, healthy fats, vitamins, minerals and omega 3s and 6s.

Duck blood soup:
This soup is made from a whole duck, meaning every last part of it, enriched with the duck’s blood. Popular in Vietnam, duck blood soup is a great source of protein, minerals and vitamins.

Water blisters:
These usually appear when rubbing occurs on the feet, like on a long hike or when you’re wearing the wrong shoes. The top layer of your skin separates from the one below and the area between fills with serum, the clear part of your blood. This may be gross, but we suggest you don’t pop the blister open. It will heal itself if left alone.

Fecal transplants: Fecal matter from a healthy person is transplanted by enema to a sick person. They have been found to be beneficial in healing digestive disorders and infections. In a study with 317 people suffering from a gastrointestinal disease, the fecal transplants resulted in 92 percent of the cases being resolved.

Leeches:
Not just a gross scene from the movie Stand By Me, leeches are quite useful during surgery to stimulate blood circulation.

Stinky soy dish:
While the over-consumption of genetically modified soy may pose some risks to your health, it is also believed that this dish of fermented soy with its gooey consistency and appalling smell is actually good for your health. It provides protein and probiotics, as well as a number of vitamins and minerals.

Ear wax:
Like snot, ear wax is an essential part of the body. It keeps the tubes lubricated, and it keeps germs and dust from entering the ears and causing damage.

Eye gunk:
This is another one of those not-so-pleasant things you’ll find after waking up in the morning. During the day, tears drain into the tear duct and down the nose. Blinking makes that possible. At night, your eyes are closed and the tears collect in the corners of your eyes. Just be sure to see a doctor if the crusty stuff is yellow or green, because that’s an indication of infection.

Cod liver oil:
The oil is extracted from the liver of fish. There are no redeeming qualities for its taste, but the health benefits should not be ignored. Take your cod liver oil as a capsule before going to bed, and you’ll avoid the unpleasant fishy burps.

Did you know that a child’s brain absorbs much more radiation than that of an adult?

Dr. Martin Blank, Ph.D., from the Department of Physiology and Cellular Biophysics at Colombia University, has joined a group of scientists from around the world who are making an international appeal to the United Nations regarding the dangers associated with the use of various electromagnetic emitting devices, like cells phones and WiFi.

What WiFi, Cell Phones & More Are Really Doing To Our Health

Below is a video of him outlining the various dangers associated with these devices.

Multiple studies have revealed that cell phone radiation can cause cancer. Did you know that The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified radio frequency fields (including those from cell phones) as a possible carcinogen in 2011? (source)

WATCH THE VIDEO:

The dangers of cell phone use gained a lot of mainstream credibility in 2011 when the World Health Organization (WHO) admitted that cell phone radiation may cause cancer.

The statement was based off of a cumulative decision made by a team of 31 scientists, from 14 different countries, after reviewing evidence that suggested this to be the case.

You can read more about that here. It’s pretty startling news, especially given the fact that a child’s brain absorbs much more radiation than that of an adult.

The first cell phone generation is now growing up, so if you are a parent, hopefully this gives you something to think about.

5 Reasons Why Vitaminwater Might Be Just as Bad for You as Coke

$

A beverage called Vitaminwater has been very popular in recent years. It contains added vitamins and minerals, and is marketed as healthy.

However, what is left out of the marketing claims, is that Vitaminwater is loaded with added sugar.

As you may know, sugar can cause severe harm when consumed in excess.

Additionally, almost no one actually needs more of the nutrients added to Vitaminwater.

This article lists 5 reasons why Vitaminwater is actually bad for your health.

5 Reasons Why Vitaminwater Might Be Just as Bad for You as Coke

What is Vitaminwater?

Vitaminwater is a beverage brand owned by the Coca-Cola company.

There are many varieties, each with an attractive name like “focus,” “endurance,” “refresh,” “defense” and “essential.”

As is reflected in the name, it is water that is enriched with vitamins and minerals. It is also claimed to contain natural colors and flavors.

However, Vitaminwater is also loaded with added sugar, particularly fructose, which is linked to all sorts of health problems when consumed in excess.

Vitaminwater also has a “Zero” product line, with no added sugar. Instead, it is sweetened with erythritol and a refined sweet compound extracted from the stevia plant. The first three reasons do not apply to Vitaminwater Zero.

Bottom line: Vitaminwater is a brand of beverages owned by the Coca-Cola company. It contains added vitamins and minerals, and is generally sweetened with sugar. There is also a “Zero” line without added sugar.

1. Vitaminwater is High in Liquid Sugar, and May Contain Just as Much Fructose as Coca-Cola

One 20-oz (591 ml) bottle of Vitaminwater contains about 120 calories and 32 grams of sugar, just about 50 percent less than a regular Coke.

However, it differs between countries which “type” of sugar is used.

In the U.S., they sweeten Vitaminwater with crystalline fructose and cane sugar, but in other countries they use mainly cane sugar (fancy word for sugar).

Crystalline fructose is the worst, being almost pure fructose (over 98 percent), while cane sugar is 50 percent glucose and 50 percent fructose.

If we look more closely, we can see that a bottle of Vitaminwater (in the U.S.) may contain about the same amount of fructose as a bottle of regular Coke.

That is because the majority of the sugar in U.S. Vitaminwater is in the form of pure fructose, while fructose comprises only half of the sugar content of Coke.

Many studies show that fructose is the main harmful component of added sugar, not glucose.

Bottom line: One bottle of Vitaminwater contains 120 calories and 32 grams of sugar. In countries where it is sweetened with Crystalline fructose (like the U.S.), it contains just as much fructose as a sugary drink like Coke.

2. Sugar-Sweetened Beverages Are Highly Fattening

When it comes to weight gain/loss, what you drink is just as important as what you eat.

When you drink liquid sugar calories, your body does not compensate by making you eat less of other foods instead.

The calories coming from these sugar-sweetened drinks are then added on top of everything you eat.

Over time, this can lead to weight gain and increased risk of obesity and other related diseases.

Consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is among the world’s strongest risk factors for obesity, some studies showing up to a 60 percent increased risk of obesity in children, for each daily serving.

There is no reason why Vitaminwater should be any different. It is just another sugary beverage.

Bottom line: Your body does not compensate for liquid sugar calories, making you eat more calories overall. Sugar-sweetened beverages like Vitaminwater are strongly linked to weight gain and obesity.

3. Sugar-Sweetened Beverages Raise Your Risk of All Sorts of Diseases

Almost all health experts agree that added sugar plays a key role in the epidemics of obesity and chronic diseases.

It is recommended to keep the intake of added sugars below 10 percent of total calories, preferably below 5 percent.

For a 2,500 calorie diet, 10 percent of calories amounts to 62 grams of sugar, and 5 percent amounts to 31 grams of sugar.

As mentioned above, one bottle of Vitaminwater contains 32 grams of added sugar. That is 50-100 percent of the recommended upper limit.

Added sugar is strongly associated with type 2 diabetes, tooth decay, heart disease, the metabolic syndrome and even cancer.

This applies mainly to fructose, which can only be metabolized by the liver in significant amounts.

Excess fructose consumption may cause high blood cholesterol and triglycerides, increased blood pressure, increased insulin resistance, fat build-up around the organs and increased risk of fatty liver disease.

These are major risk factors for heart disease, diabetes and obesity.

It should be noted that this does not apply to the fructose we get from fruit. Fruit contains water and fiber, and has a low energy density, so it is very hard to eat too much of it.

Bottom line: One bottle of Vitaminwater provides 50-100 percent of the recommended upper limit for added sugar. Added sugar, especially fructose, is associated with a variety of diseases and health problems.

4. Vitaminwater Contains Micronutrients That Most People are Already Getting Enough of

All types of Vitaminwater contain B vitamins (50-120 percent of the RDI) and vitamin C (50-150 percent of the RDI).

Some types also contain smaller amounts of vitamins A and E, and the minerals potassium, magnesium, manganese, zinc and chromium.

Vitamins B and C are water soluble vitamins that are almost never lacking in the average person’s diet.

Consuming excess amounts of these vitamins does not provide any sort of health benefit. They are not stored, but are simply washed out of the body via urine.

That being said, there are subgroups of people who may be lacking in some of these vitamins and minerals (especially B12 and folate).

However, it makes absolutely no sense to drink a harmful sugary beverage to get these nutrients.

Eat whole foods instead, or take a supplement if you are truly lacking in something.

Bottom line: Most of the micronutrients in Vitaminwater are not needed, as most people are already getting more than enough. Any excess amount is simply expelled from the body via urine.

5. In Some Cases, Excess Micronutrients in Supplement Form Can Cause Harm

When it comes to nutrition, more is not always better.

Vitamins, minerals and antioxidants are absolutely crucial as part of a healthy, real food-based diet.

They may improve health and help prevent a range of diseases, including heart disease and cancer.

However, supplementing with vitamins or antioxidants has not been linked with the same health benefits.

Supplementation with some antioxidants and vitamins, such as vitamins A and E, has actually been associated with increased risk of premature death in some studies.

Although Vitaminwater does not provide excessive amounts of these vitamins on its own, it does contain considerable amounts (25-50 percent of the recommended daily intake).

When you add 25-50 percent of the recommended daily intake on top of what you’re already getting from food, then it is possible that all of this will add up to reach excessive amounts.

So not only are the micronutrients in Vitaminwater not beneficial, they may even be downright harmful if they are increasing your intake to harmful levels.

Bottom line: Some Vitaminwater varieties contain vitamins A and E, which may have harmful effects when consumed in unnaturally large amounts.

Vitaminwater is Not Healthy—It is Just Another Harmful Sugary Beverage

The owners (The Coca-Cola Company) have actually been sued for deceptive and unsubstantiated health claims about Vitaminwater.

Their response was interesting: “no reasonable person would be misled into thinking that Vitaminwater was a healthy beverage.”

They are actually trying to defend themselves by saying that the health promoting claims are so far fetched that people couldn’t possibly believe them.

The problem is that many people do actually fall for marketing claims.

Most people don’t read ingredient labels, and don’t realize how unethical and ruthless the junk food companies can be.

Despite the fancy marketing, Vitaminwater is a harmful, disease-promoting beverage that most people should be avoiding as much as possible.

At best, it is just a slightly “less bad” version of Coke.

You Won’t Believe The Amount Of Shrimp That Test Positive for Very Dangerous Bacteria

There are now more reasons to consider skipping your next shrimp cocktail. In a startling new Consumer Reports study, bacteria was detected in more than half the raw shrimp that was tested, with some also tainted with illegal antibiotic residues.

For the study, How Safe is Your Shrimp?, scientists analyzed 342 packages of frozen shrimp—284 raw and 58 cooked samples—purchased at Albertsons, Costco, Fry’s Marketplace, Hy-Vee, Kroger, Sprouts Farmers Market and Walmart in 27 cities across the U.S.

Farmed Shrimp

“Bacteria and algae can begin to grow and disease can set in, prompting farmers to use drugs and other chemicals that can remain on the shrimp and seep into the surrounding environment,” said Urvashi Rangan, Ph.D., executive director of the Consumer Reports Food Safety and Sustainability Center, in the report.

Not only is there the possibility of bacteria and viral infections swarming in these Asian shrimp farms, a recent investigation from the Associated Press revealed participation of forced labor from Burmese migrants in Thailand’s shrimp processing chain.
The study found that 60 percent of raw shrimp tested positive for bacteria, including salmonella, E. coli and listeria. In seven raw shrimp samples, scientists detected the antibiotic-resistant superbug MRSA, or Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, that could potentially lead to a dangerous infection.

America’s demand for our favorite crustacean is causing a sea of trouble here and abroad.

The country currently consumes about three times more shrimp than it did 35 years ago, with the average American chomping down nearly 4 pounds of shrimp per year. While the crustacean is clearly America’s favorite seafood, most of the country’s supply comes from faraway countries such as India, Indonesia and Thailand, where shrimp is squeezed into industrial tanks or shallow, man-made ponds where they’re fed commercial pellets, sometimes containing antibiotics to ward off disease, the study pointed out.

The graph shows 284 samples of raw shrimp purchased at stores around the country. The last column shows the percentage of samples that contained at least one of the following bacteria: vibrio, staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, listeria or salmonella.

Consumer Reports is calling on the federal government to make shrimp safer to consume. The organization pointed out that it’s the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) job “to inspect shrimp coming into the U.S. to make sure it doesn’t contain any drugs or chemicals that aren’t permitted in imported shrimp.”

“It is the FDA, not local retailers, that is charged with enforcing the law that prohibits importing shrimp containing antibiotics,” Consumer Reports said. “According to the FDA, if those drugs had been detected in even one shrimp sample, the entire shipment would have been refused entry into the U.S.”

So for your next trip to the grocery store, Consumer Reports recommends buying farmed shrimp raised without chemicals, including antibiotics. Seek out varieties that come from large outdoor ponds that mimic their natural habitat or in tanks that constantly filter and recycle water and waste, the report said.

Consumer Reports also suggests looking for shrimp carrying the Marine Stewardship Council logo or checking seafoodwatch.org and look for shrimp listed as a “Best Choice” or “Good Alternative.” The organization also suggests following their safe-prep rules.

You also want to be wary about anything labeled “organic,” as “organic” seafood sold in the country is not approved by the U.S. government. (The U.S. Department of Agriculture is set to propose standards for organic seafood raised in the country this year).

“Even though most bacteria on shrimp would be killed during the cooking process, our test results raise real questions about how shrimp is raised, processed, and regulated,” Rangan said.

Study: Marijuana Helps Heal Broken Bones & Even Makes Them Stronger

A marijuana chemical known as cannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD) helps fractures heal faster and even make the bones stronger than they were before, according to a study conducted by researchers from Tel Aviv University and Hebrew University and published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research.

CBD has no psychotropic effects.

"We found that CBD alone makes bones stronger during healing, enhancing the maturation of the collagenous matrix, which provides the basis for new mineralization of bone tissue," researcher Yankel Gabet said. "After being treated with CBD, the healed bone will be harder to break in the future."

Bones contain cannabinoid receptors

The researchers inflicted mild femoral fractures on rats, then injected some of them with CBD, and others with CBD plus tetrahydrocannabinol (THC, the ingredient that causes the marijuana high).

They then evaluated the healing of the rats, comparing them with rats who had not received any marijuana chemicals.

The researchers found that rats injected with CBD had the same effect whether or not it was accompanied by THC.

"We found CBD alone to be sufficiently effective in enhancing fracture healing," Gabet said.
"Other studies have also shown CBD to be a safe agent, which leads us to believe we should continue this line of study in clinical trials to assess its usefulness in improving human fracture healing."

The study supported the same team's prior findings that the body contains receptors that respond to cannabinoid compounds, and that these receptors are not confined to the brain.

"We only respond to cannabis because we are built with intrinsic compounds and receptors that can also be activated by compounds in the cannabis plant," Gabet said.

The prior study found that the skeleton contains cannabinoid receptors that stimulate bone formation and inhibit bone loss. The new study seems to confirm these findings.

Medical marijuana benefits "undeniable"

The study is part of a growing body of research into the medical benefits of marijuana compounds, including CBD. The findings may lead to new research into ways that marijuana could be used to treat osteoporosis or other bone diseases.

"The clinical potential of cannabinoid-related compounds is simply undeniable at this point," Gabet said.
"While there is still a lot of work to be done to develop appropriate therapies, it is clear that it is possible to detach a clinical therapy objective from the psychoactivity of cannabis. CBD, the principal agent in our study, is primarily anti-inflammatory and has no psychoactivity."
The list of benefits to medical marijuana continues to grow. It is currently used primarily for chronic pain, to reduce side effects of chemotherapy and to improve appetite in AIDS patients.

It has also shown promise in regulating blood sugar and slowing the progression of HIV. It is also being researched as a treatment for multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease.

Studies have shown that CBD suppresses seizures, stops the mestastasis of many aggressive cancers and may even kill leukemia cells.

A 2013 study in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology found that CBD was just as effective as a popular antipsychotic drug in the treatment of schizophrenia and paranoia, but without the dangerous side effects. Other studies have confirmed the effectiveness of CBD as a safe antipsychotic.

Although marijuana remains technically illegal under U.S. federal law, it is legal to use CBD for research or for limited medical functions in 17 U.S. states. The medical use of marijuana itself is legal in 23 other states.

The federal government still classifies marijuana as having "no currently accepted medical use." Yet even this may be starting to change. The FDA recently approved CBD extracts as an experimental treatment for Dravet syndrome, a rare form of childhood epilepsy. Preliminary clinical trials are now going forward.

Spicy Food Is Associated With A Lower Risk Of Death

Good news for chili chompers: Regularly chowing down on spicy foods is associated with a lower risk of death, especially if you stay away from booze. But before you start drowning your cheerios in tabasco sauce, it’s unclear at this stage whether it is the spicy food itself or some other factor that is potentially bestowing the observed benefits. Regardless, further research is warranted, and the findings add to a growing body of evidence that chili could be healthful. The study has been published in The BMJ.

The world seems to have an ongoing obsession with unlocking the secrets to longevity. What makes people live longer, and can we alter our lives to stitch a few years onto our finite timelines? There is no simple answer at this stage; aging is incredibly complex, but one factor that has long been considered the cornerstone of health and longevity is diet.

While we know that eating your greens and grains and avoiding too much sugar and processed food is the way to go, what about components of food, like spices? Lab investigations and small population studies have highlighted possible benefits of the active ingredients of various spices, and given the popularity and widespread use of chili in particular, researchers decided to embark on an impressively large and more robust study to find out more.

Almost half a million adults from 10 geographically diverse areas in China were enrolled between 2004 and 2008 and followed for around seven years. At the start of the study, participants filled in a questionnaire about their spicy food consumption habits, including how often they ate these foods and what spices they tended to contain, like fresh chili pepper or chili sauce. Data was also collected on numerous other factors and characteristics, such as education, alcohol consumption, physical activity and intake of red meat and other foods.

After excluding those with a family history of cancer, heart disease and stroke, during the follow-up investigation more than 20,000 of the participants died. They found that those who ate spicy foods one or two days a week had a 10% lower risk of death – both overall and from specific causes like cancer – than those who only ate such foods less than once per week. Those who ate spicy foods almost every day were at a 14% lower mortality risk than infrequent consumers. Although the same trends were seen in both men and women, the relationship was strongest in those who avoided alcohol.

So should we all start shoveling spices to live longer? Not so fast. The study has merits due to the large sample size, but also clear limitations: It was confined to the Chinese population and may therefore not be generalizable, it relied on self-reporting – which is not quantitative and cannot be validated – and studies such as this cannot infer cause and effect. Furthermore, since it is rare to use one spice in isolation, it is difficult to point the finger at chilies when it could be another ingredient commonly used in conjunction, or even a style of cooking, that is behind the observed relationship.

That being said, various prior studies have identified numerous possible health benefits of the active compound in chili, capsaicin, which seems to possess antioxidant, anti-cancer, and anti-inflammatory properties, to name just a few. The association is therefore plausible, but not confirmed, so further studies are warranted.

Chemical Found In Colgate Toothpaste Linked To Cancer

Chemical Found In Colgate Toothpaste Linked To Cancer

A chemical found in one of North America’s most popular toothpastes, Colgate Total, has been linked to cancer and other harmful health ailments.

It’s called triclosan, it’s also used in antiperspirants/deodorants, cleansers, and hand sanitizers as a preservative and an anti-bacterial agent. In addition to cosmetics and Colgate toothpaste, triclosan is used as an antibacterial agent in laundry detergent, facial tissues, and antiseptics for wounds, as well as a preservative to resist bacteria, fungus, mildew and odors in other household products that are sometimes advertized as “anti-bacterial.” These products include garbage bags, toys, linens, mattresses, toilet fixtures, clothing, furniture fabric, and more.

A recent study published in the journal Chemical Research in Toxicology found that the chemical encourages cancer-cell growth. Various studies over the past few years have clearly outlined the health dangers associated with this chemical.(1)

Don’t forget, the government and corporations used to tell us that asbestos, PCB’s and DDT were all deemed safe and effective, yet all of these chemicals have since been banned.

Triclosan can also pass through the skin and interfere with hormone function (endocrine disruption). (2)(3) It doesn’t stop there, a study published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives from 2008 shows how scientists detected triclosan in the urine of nearly 75 percent of those tested (2,517 people age six or older). (4)

The Canadian Medical Association has even called for a ban on products that contain Triclosan. (5)

Colgate says that the chemical is safe, in doing so they cited the Food and Drug Administrations (FDA) process that led to its approval in the first place. But according to Bloomberg:

“A closer look at that application process, however, reveals that some of the scientific findings Colgate put forward to establish triclosan’s safety in toothpaste weren’t black and white — and weren’t, until this year, available to the public.” (source)
Believe it or not, these documents were actually withheld from public viewing by the FDA. It’s also important to note that major corporations and the FDA are pretty much the same thing, and these corporations have a big influence over government policy. The only reason that the documents were recently released is because of a lawsuit that was filed over a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.

The FDA report raised concerns that the chemical could cause cancer. You can view the release of the document HERE.

According to Bloomberg:

“The pages show how even with one of the U.S.’s most stringent regulatory processes — FDA approval of a new drug — the government relies on company-backed science to show products are safe and effective. The recently released pages, taken alongside new research on triclosan, raise questions about whether the agency did appropriate due diligence in approving [Colgate] Total 17 years ago, and whether its approval should stand in light of new research, said three scientists who reviewed the pages at Bloomberg News’s request.”(source)

Despite all the evidence, Colgate still maintains that everything is fine and there is nothing to worry about. Will you believe them? Will you continue to put your trust in these corporations instead of doing the research yourself? By now it’s clear that these corporations are not really concerned with safety or care, but more so about profit and making people sick, as well as contributing to the concealment of scientific data. The same shareholders that own these companies who are behind the distribution of these products are also holding major shares in various drug companies. There is profit to be had from making people sick.

Colgate has said that it has no plans to reformulate the toothpaste.

It’s remarkable how easy it is to head over to the drug-store to pick up cosmetics, household cleaning products, soap, shampoo, toothpaste and other necessities without ever thinking about how it’s made, what goes into it, the science behind it and the health hazards that are associated with doing so.

More information is coming to light, especially within the past few years. The rate at which people are waking up and starting to critically question what we choose to surround ourselves with on a daily basis is increasing exponentially. Most importantly, people are starting to make better choices.

How to Reset Your Body’s Hormone Levels to Lose Stubborn Pounds

$
0
0
Hormones. There those tiny little things within your body that play a huge part in your weight, your height, the texture and the amount of hair you have, the size of your chest, your skin type and even your mood.

While hormones may be tiny, they have a huge impact on your overall health and well being. If they’re tweaked just enough in the wrong direction, you could end up being irritable, tired and feeling like you’ve put on weight.

How to Reset Your Body’s Hormone Levels to Lose Stubborn Pounds

Fortunately, there is a way that you can reset your hormones and put your body and mind back on the right path. Here are some simple suggestions that will help you do just that:

  • Sleep in cool temperatures. When you sleep, your body temperature naturally rises, and when you feel hot while you’re sleeping, you’re more inclined to toss, turn, wake up and throw the covers off of yourself. When your sleep is disturbed, so are your hormones. In fact, disturbed sleep can cause your body to produce less leptin, the hormone that is responsible for controlling your appetite and weight gain. In order to avoid a huge change in your hormone levels, try setting your thermostat a little lower before you go to bed. Sleeping in cooler conditions will help your body feel cooler, which means you will have a more restful sleep.
  • Don’t crash diet. Though the allure of a crash may be tempting, avoid it. A sudden reduction in your calorie intake can cause your thyroid hormone levels to drop and slow down your metabolism. You can still lose weight, though; just eight a well-balanced diet all the time.
  • Skip the caffeine. Try nixing your caffeine habit. Caffeine can increase the production of cortisol, the stress producing hormone. So, the more caffeine you consume, the more stressed and irritable you will be.
  • Avoid those PMS cravings. When that time of the month arrives, it’s normal to crave things like chocolate; however, try to avoid it. Instead, satisfy your craving for sweets with a sweet fruit, which will bring your magnesium levels back up – something that is depleted when you’re PMSing.
  • Pump up the workout. Step up your workout and you’ll speed up your metabolism and boost your production of endorphins, those feel good hormones that boost your mood and your immune system. Try listening to music to motivate you to push harder and you’ll also increase your serotonin levels.
By following these simple tips, you can reset your hormones and change the way your body reacts to certain situations, including how you eat, how you sleep, how you handle stress and so much more!

4 Warning Signs Indicate Your Body is Filled With Toxins

$
0
0
If you want to learn something about the condition of your body all you need to do is devote some attention to the signs that indicate if your body is clean and healthy.

The body absorbs toxins through diet and it eliminates them through the liver every day. But, sometimes, due to improper diet or insufficient physical activity, toxins are discharged and deposited in the body.

These are the four most common signals that indicate your body is filled with toxins.

4 Warning Signs Indicate Your Body is Filled With Toxins

1. Physiological needs

Going to the toilet frequently is a clear sign that the body is full of toxins. But do not be afraid because this way you are sure you will remove the toxins that otherwise would return to the bloodstream and then can cause health problems.

If you face such problem, drink more liquids, teas and probiotics that will improve the intestinal micro flora and eliminate toxins faster.

2. Unpleasant breath

Bad smell that comes from the oral cavity is another sign that the body is full of toxins. You can be sure you are dealing with a bacterium you have in your mouth or your stomach and liver are unable to process all the toxins. In order to get rid of bad breath you need to brush your tongue with a toothbrush and chew on some parsley.

3. Continuously accumulating of excess weight

There are numerous reasons why you cannot lose excess body weight. Some of the causes may be problems with hormones, improper diet and of course an excess amount of toxins in the blood. Some toxins such as pesticides bind to fats from the body and their release is disabled.

Eat healthy foods, live healthy and clean your body with proper and healthy diet. This is the only way you will get rid of toxins, and thus will release from obesity.

4. You are bothered by certain smells

If you have a reaction to a certain perfume or smoke it can be caused by toxins in your body. We often become hypersensitive to smells when the liver is unable to eliminate toxins from the body. Airways are clogged and the body reacts to it, the senses become sharpened and sometimes headache or nausea may occur.

Tea made of dandelion flower can help and boost the process of detoxification. Also, castor oil can be of great help when it comes to fighting such problem.

Why Durian is named The King of Fruits

The durian fruit is popular in Southeast Asia and is even known as the King of Fruits. Durian is well-known for its strong odor that usually turns off people who have encountered the fruit for the first time. However, once opened and tasted, the durian fruit is actually sweet, delicious, and healthy as well. It is so healthy that the flesh is not only the one that gives health benefits, but also its leaves and skin.

The flesh has many nutrients, such as fat, iron, calcium, carbohydrates, riboflavin, and folate. The most notable nutrients found in the durian fruit are phosphorus and iron. These two minerals are 10 times more than the ones found in bananas.

Health Benefits

If you eat durian fruit, here are the ways it can help improve your health:

1. Eating the flesh of the fruit is believed to cure jaundice.

2. Durian has manganese, which can maintain your blood sugar levels so that your numbers will be more stable.

3. The flesh of the fruit has B vitamins as well as potassium and calcium. When combined, these three can contribute to the health of your bones and joints.

4. When you eat durian, it may be able to help you overcome anemia
because the fruit is rich in folate and iron.

5. The fruit is also good for your teeth and mouth because of its phosphorus content.

6. The vitamin C in this fruit can help prevent premature aging, since the said vitamin acts as an antioxidant that repels toxins.

7. The vitamin B6
in the fruit can help reduce stress levels and therefore decrease the risk of depression.

8. One serving of the fruit can give you almost 20% of the daily recommended value for carbohydrates. If you’re not trying to avoid carbs on your diet, durian is a good source for it. Carbohydrates are great for people who need extra energy such as athletes and runners.

9. Durian has tryptophan, which is actually called the natural sleeping pill. If you are having trouble falling asleep, you can turn to durian to induce a restful sleep.

10. Durian also has thiamin, providing you 30% of the recommended amount. Your body needs thiamin to digest carbohydrates and turn them into energy. Thiamin is also great for the health of your nerves and muscles.

These 10 benefits of durian can truly help you achieve good health. You should note though that durian is high in cholesterol and sugar. People with diabetes and high blood pressure as well as pregnant women are advised to eat the fruit in moderation.

Inflammation is an important immune system function. But, when out of control, it can cause serious damage. Inflammation has been linked to major diseases such as Alzheimer’s, arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart disease and signs of aging.

There’s good news, though: many foods are naturally anti-inflammatory. Antioxidants found in foods protect your cells from the effects of free radicals and can help reduce an overabundance of inflammation in your body.

12 natural, anti-inflammatory foods

Antioxidant-Rich Foods to Boost Your Immune System

1. Beets

Beets, with their wonderful red color, are a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Beets can boost your energy and lower your blood pressure. A single serving of 500 milliliters of beetroot juice has been shown to reduce blood pressure by 10.4/8 millimeters. Beets are high in nitrates; this study showed that a serving of beetroot juice boosted athletic performance by one to three percent.

2. Blueberries

Blueberries have been found to reduce inflammation in many studies on animals; there are yet to be more studies done on humans. Studies do indicate that blueberries are good for brain health. It is best to eat organic berries since pesticides on berries are hard to wash away due to their size.

3. Broccoli

Broccoli is loaded with detoxifying antioxidants. Broccoli is a particularly rich source of kaempferol and isothiocyanates, both anti-inflammatory phytonutrients. Research has shown the ability of kaempferol to lessen the impact of allergy-related substances on our body. Broccoli even has a significant amount of omega 3 fatty acids, which is a well known anti-inflammatory.

4. Flaxseed

Flaxseed oil has a balance of omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. The omega 3 fatty acids reduce inflammation. Research studies show lignans can slow the growth of prostate cancer cells. It was also found that lignans may play an important role in increasing breast cancer survival. Three studies following thousands of women diagnosed with breast cancer were published at PubMed Central (1, 2, 3)

5. Green Tea

Green Tea contains many anti-inflammatory flavonoids. A 2002 study found the most abundant catechin of green tea (epigallocatechin-3-gallate) to be a potent anti-inflammatory compound with therapeutic potential. The antioxidant properties of green tea are so effective that studies have shown a 22 percent reduced risk of developing breast cancer, a 48percent reduced risk of prostate cancer and an amazing 57 percent reduced risk of colorectal cancer.

6. Garlic

Garlic can help reduce inflammation. At Washington State University they found garlic to be 100 times more effective than two antibiotics at fighting the Campylobacter bacterium—one of the causes of intestinal illness.

7. Ginger

Ginger helps reduce inflammation and control blood sugar. Ginger tea is a great addition to any diet. A study published in the National Library of Medicine compared ginger extract to common pain killers and found ginger to be very effective in reducing pain.

8. EVOO

Extra Virgin Olive Oil helps fight inflammation. Olive oil is full of polyphenols which protect the heart and blood vessels from inflammation.

9. Onions

Onions contain quercetin, a potent antioxidant that can help your body fight inflammation. Onions stimulate the respiratory tract and help expell sputum (phlegm). The onion is also a proven antioxidant and may be helpful in treating certain cancers.

 10. Seaweed

Seaweed contains a complex carbohydrate called fucoidan that studies have shown to reduce inflammation. Seaweed contains 14 times more calcium by weight than milk. Kelp, kombu, wakame and arame are good sources of seaweed.

11. Spinach

Spinach is one of the highest nutrient-dense foods. It contains a unique mixture of phytonutrients, is high in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory components which help protect against cellular damage.

12. Turmeric

Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties and has been shown to be more effective than anti-inflammatory drugs. Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, targets multiple steps in the inflammatory pathway at the molecular level.

Smart People Live Longer — Here’s Why

Smart People Live Longer — Here’s Why

Smarter people tend to live longer than those with less luck in the intelligence department. Now, a new study hints at why: It's (almost) all about good genes.

About 95 percent of the relationship between intelligence and longevity is explained by genetic influences on both traits, researchers reported July 26 in the International Journal of Epidemiology. The study was somewhat limited in that most of the participants took intelligence tests during middle age, rather than in their youth. By that time, the IQ results might be skewed by the cognitive decline of aging.

Nevertheless, the researchers say, the results suggest that brighter people don't just live longer because they make healthier choices, or make more money that affords them better health care. Rather, they live longer because their genetic makeup favors both smarts and a long life.

"We found that the small relationship between intelligence and life span was almost all genetic," said study researcher Rosalind Arden, a research associate at the London School of Economics and Political Science. [Extending Life: 7 Ways to Live Past 100]

Brains and life span

Studies large and small have linked smarts with the likelihood of living to old age. For example, a study of people born in Scotland that was published in 2001 in the British Medical Journal found that the higher people scored on an IQ test at age 11, the more likely they were to survive to at least age 76. In 2007, a paper in the Journal of Health Economics found that Nobel Prize winners slightly outlived runners-up. The researchers concluded that the prize money was not the reason for the winners' longer life spans, but that the raised social status conferred by the prize might have been.

Researchers have considered a few reasons that could explain the longevity advantage of intelligence. It could be that smart people make better health choices, get safer jobs or have family advantages, all factors associated with living longer, Arden said. Or perhaps smarter people have better genes in general, genes that boost both intelligence and life span.

A study of twins could answer this question, Arden and her colleagues reasoned. Identical twins share 100 percent of their DNA; fraternal twins share only half. If longevity is mostly environmental, one would expect that the smarter of two identical twins would live longer than his or her sibling as a result of better choices, employment and other external factors.

If, by contrast, longevity is largely genetic, the smarter twin wouldn't get much of a longevity boost over his or her identical sibling; the pair's shared genes would carry the day and influence their life spans equally.

Meanwhile, if genes determine longevity, the brighter twin in a fraternal pair would be expected to live much longer than his or her sibling, because the smarter twin would presumably be granted the genes that confer both intelligence and longevity.

Testing twins

Arden and her colleagues analyzed data from three long-running twin studies that all looked at sets of twins in which at least one twin had already died. One study looked at 377 pairs of male World War II-veteran twins from the United States. Another was a study of 246 pairs of twins from Sweden, and the third looked at 784 pairs of Danish twins.

In general, the researchers found, the more intelligent twin of each pair lived longer, whether the twins were fraternal or identical. But there was a much larger difference in longevity between fraternal twins, pointing to genes as the major driver of the life-span differences.

Statistically, the researchers found, lifestyle choices could explain only 5 percent of the link between intelligence and life span. The rest was genetic.

Other studies have found tantalizing links between anti-inflammatory genes and longer life spans. The new numbers should be taken with a grain of salt, though, Arden warned. Because most of the participants joined the studies later in life, the research didn't capture deaths before middle age. The intelligence-test results also come from middle age, when cognitive decline might already be at play.

"My co-authors and I, we all feel this is a really interesting study and an interesting first finding, but we would want to see it replicated with more data," Arden told Live Science.

In particular, Arden said, it would be useful to replicate the finding in animals such as dogs or mice, which don't tend to make the questionable lifestyle choices that can confound studies of human longevity.

"You don't find many dogs or mice that abuse alcohol or smoke weed," Arden said. "In fact, most dogs and mice don't even smoke cigarettes."

Clean-living animals aside, parents shouldn't panic if their children don't top the curve on school exams. The intelligence-longevity link is a small one, Arden said. To live longer, it's less useful to fret over genetics and far more helpful to eat well and exercise, while avoiding cigarettes and alcohol.

"Nothing we found counteracts the good old stuff your grandmother would have told you about how to live well," Arden said.

Goya or Bitter melon (you may have also heard it referred to as Karela, Balsam Pear or Bitter Gourd), is commonly used for many different health benefits.

The melon is a very helpful food, but it has an extremely bitter taste. On first look the Goya looks like a cucumber but with ugly gourd–like bumps all over it. It thrives in humid and hot climates, so they are commonly found in South America and Asian countries.

Dr. Frank Shallenberger M.D., who specializes in Anti Aging Treatment and Alternative Medicine at The Nevada Center of Alternative & Anti – Aging Medicine, has used the fruit to fight pancreatic cancer.

This Plant Kills Cancer and Stops Diabetes

Dr. Shallenberger has found bitter melon to be an effective tool in inhibiting cancer cell growth and advises his patients to go for natural substances that inhibit cancer cell growth.

During his latest research, Dr. Shallenberger found that when bitter melon juice is diluted to 5% in water, it proved to be very effective in fighting pancreatic cancer.

Bitter melon was able to damage cancer cell lines by a rate of 90% and 98%. The University of Colorado tested bitter melon’s effect further and found a 64% reduction in the size of the pancreatic tumors.

Dr. Shallenberger’s research is just one of the many health benefits bitter melon has to offer. Bitter melon has also been used as a remedy for high blood pressure, asthma, skin infections, diabetes symptoms and stomach problems. The plant has been used as a traditional medicine in Africa, India, China and the southeastern US.

Bitter melons contain high amounts of nutrients, but are very low in calories. It is an excellent source of magnesium, manganese, high dietary fiber, vitamins B1, B2, and B3, C, folate, zinc, and phosphorus.

It contains twice the beta – carotene of broccoli, it is rich in iron, twice the potassium of a banana and twice the calcium of spinach. Even with all of the beneficial nutrients it has to offer, one negative about the bitter melon is that its bitter taste detracts a lot of people from consuming it.

Health Benefits of Bitter Melon

  • Regular consumption of bitter gourd juice has been proven to improve stamina and energy levels.
  • Bitter melon is an excellent source of folate. When taken by mothers during early pregnancy, folate helps reduce the incidence of neural tube defects in newborn babies.
  • Type – 2 Diabetes. Bitter melon notably contains polypeptide – P, phyto – nutrient, a plant insulin known to lower blood sugar levels. Even more, bitter melon contains a unique phyto – constituent that has been confirmed to have charantin which increases glycogen synthesis and glucose uptake inside the cells of muscle, liver and adipose tissue. Together, these two reduce blood sugar levels in the treatment of type – 2 diabetes.
  • Immune booster. This bitter juice can also help to increase your body’s resistance against infection and build your immune system.
  • Eye problems. The high beta – carotene and other properties in bitter melon make it one of the healthiest fruits that helps improve eyesight and alleviate eye problems.
  • By speeding up your body’s metabolism of alcohol, bitter melon can help relieve hangovers. It also helps repair , cleanse and nourish liver problems due to alcohol consumption.
  • Indigestion/Constipation. Bitter melon stimulates peristalsis of food and easy digestion through the bowel until it is excreted from the body.
  • Liver Cleanse. Bitter melon helps cleanse and detoxify your liver, especially when consumed as a juice. In addition it helps relieve gout pain and improves blood circulation.
  • Regular consumption of bitter juice has also been known to improve psoriasis conditions and other fungal infections like athletes feet and ringworm.

Best ways to consume bitter melon

Unlike some other vegetables and fruits it is best to pick a bitter melon that is firm and still green. You may want to avoid if the bitter melon is starting to turn orange or has soft spots (the more bitter the taste, the riper the melon gets).

It is best to clean your bitter melon under cold running water and brush with a soft vegetable brush.
  • Okinawantir – fry with bitter melon, Goya chanpuru, pork, onion, eggs, tofu, and is a special dish of health – conscious island inhabitants.
  • Dried, and ground whole bitter gourd has been used in the preparation of iced or milk tea in some East Asian regions.
  • In India it is commonly used stuffed with garam – masala or in stir – fries, green chilies, tomato, curry leaves onions and garlic.
  • Bitter gourd is also been used in the pickle preparations.
  • In the Philippines it is known as ampalaya, it has been widely used in special dishes like Pinakbet Ilocano, prepared with shrimp paste and mixed with vegetables like okra and eggplant.
It is definitely something worth trying, if you can withstand the bitter taste of this fruit. The beneficial nutrients alone make it worthy of consumption. It is an almost ideal food to include in your diet for additional health benefits.

Organic bitter melon extract is available on Amazon.

Fluoride Linked to Coronary Heart Disease

When Will the Fluoride Poisoning Stop?

Per the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in 2010: “Prevalence of dental fluorosis was higher among younger persons and ranged from 41% among adolescents aged 12-15 to 9% among adults aged 40-49.” That rate of 41% in adolescents aged 12-15 increased from 22.6% back in 1986-87 (almost double).

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services planned in 2010 tolower the amount of fluoride allowed in water, though so far there has been no change to the amounts of fluoride added.

Today, the CDC still promotes fluoridation to water as well fluoride dental products.

In 2013, a study in Ireland was prompted over concern with that fluorosis might be linked with cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of death in Ireland.

The study found that the concern was indeed justified: “Dental Fluorosis is a biomarker for coronary heart disease (CHD). Professor Takamori’s research team observed that children with dental fluorosis have a higher incidence of heart damage and an increase in abnormal heart rhythm than those without fluorosis.”

In lieu of the evidence, will the government of Ireland stop their policy of mandatory fluoridation of the population of Ireland?

And regarding the US?

Well, in summary:

In 2010, the US government knew people were ingesting dangerous levels of fluoride, knowing causing florosis in 40% of children (among other things) and now potentially contributing to the increasing incidence of cardiovascular disease in the United States. Regulators said the amount of fluoride in drinking water should be lowered. However…
  • 2011: There was no change to fluoride levels allowed in drinking water
  • 2012: There was no change to fluoride levels allowed in drinking water
  • 2013: There was no change to fluoride levels allowed in drinking water
  • 2014: We are still waiting…
Meanwhile, US dentists still promote the use of fluoride treatments, fluoride toothpaste, and fluoride mouthwash, despite the evidence that it is linked to heart disease, and other illnesses.

This Doctor Prescribes Fruits And Vegetables Instead Of Drugs!

Hippocrates famously said, “Let food be thy medicine, and medicine thy food.” Most doctors don’t seem to take that kind of thinking to heart, seeking to surgically remove and medicate away every problem. That isn’t the case for one doctor.

Dr. Garth Davis, a progressive doctor out of Houston, Texas, began prescribing vegetables and fruits instead of drugs in the hopes that the essential nourishment plants bring our bodies might begin to cure some of his patients.

Dr. Davis is the medical director of bariatric surgery at the Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center. So far, his patients have been responding well to the changes.

“As physicians, we perform surgery or prescribe medications to our patients to make them well,” says Davis. “Why not also educate them on healthy eating, and make fresh fruits and vegetables readily available?”

Dr. Davis, partnered with Kristina Gabrielle Carrillo Bucaram, is the founder of Rawfully Organic, a nonprofit co-op.

”Dr. Davis and I agree that eating raw foods that are fiber-filled, organic, ripe and colorful should be a part of everyone’s daily routine” says Carillo-Bucaram. Together, they’ve opened up the Farmacy Stand in the hospital, which gives out fresh produce in $10 boxes. The Memorial Hermann Foundation provided the money needed to build the stand.
