  6 Reasons You Should (Or Shouldn’t) Be Eating Spicy Foods

You’ve spiced up your life, you’ve spiced up your house, and you’ve spiced up your smoothies. But I’m not here to talk about spices – I’m here to talk about spicy. Sriracha or Tabasco, Cayenne or Habanero, how do you heat up your dish?

And what do you get from it? A new study in the British Medical Journal says that adding a bit of spice and heat to your food may actually make you live longer than those who live a more bland-tasting life.

The Spice is Right?

Half a million people in China made up the study wherein researchers found those who eat spicy foods twice a week or more reduce their risk of death by 10 percent. Eating spicy foods 6 times or more per week reduces the risk by 14 percent.

But that’s just one side of the pepper. Spicy foods have some benefits, yes, but they could be damaging for other with digestive disorders, and other internal issues. Let’s talk about healthy heat and how you can realize all of its benefits without succumbing to its setbacks.


Spicy Foods: The Good and Bad 

THE GOOD


Weight Control 

New York City gastroenterologist Dr. Prem Chattoo says one of the biggest benefits of eating spicy food (especially jalapenos, habaneros and cayenne) comes from capsaicin.

This "natural chemical speeds up the metabolism by increasing heart rate and body temperature," according to Dr. Chattoo. Nutritional health counselor Cindy Kasindorf, co-founder of Joni Juice, points out, "the best time to eat spicy food is with a heavier meal during lunch or dinner. It will stimulate the digestive tract."


Fountain of Youth 

The study found eating spicy food could help you live longer. But what about looking younger?

Dr. Chattoo says spicy food can "slow down the aging process by increasing blood flow to the face and body. This makes skin look and feel more youthful." Kasindorf adds, "I believe any foods that help with the inside of your body will make you look better on the outside."

 
Healing 

Kasindorf started Joni Juice as a way to help her clients and colicky kids manage certain health issues. She makes it a point of adding some spicy elements to several of the company's juices. One reason? "Spicy foods are an excellent way to relieve sinus congestion and open up the breathing airway."

According to Dr. Chattoo, spicy food "not only helps people with sinus conditions potentially decrease their symptoms, but it also helps increase blood flow and overall circulation which improves healing properties."

Vegan food expert Pamela Elizabeth, the restaurateur behind Blossom and Blossom Du Jour restaurants, crafts much of her menus based on health properties.

Vegan food in particular is known for its spices and Elizabeth says there's a good reason for that.

"For centuries, chili peppers have been noted as being medicinal. Since they are chock full of vitamins like A and C, they can help boost the immune system and even fight the common cold."


Heart Helper 

Dr. Chattoo says "spicy food acts as an antioxidant and blood thinner, which aids in heart disease by improving cardiac blood vessel strength." Talk about heart healthy!


Anti-inflammatory 

Physical therapist Karena Wu from ActiveCare Physical Therapy says her favorite side effect from spicy food is its anti-inflammatory properties. Wu not only treats patients for arthritis, but is a rheumatoid arthritis sufferer as well.

She is glad spicy food can "help with pain and healing by increasing blood flow to an affected area."Mark Bailey, who is a private chef in New York City knows this first hand.

"My grandmother loved making Escovitch fish because the scotch bonnet peppers she believed helped relieve the pain of her arthritis. Capsaicin is the active ingredient in scotch bonnet peppers and it's known to fight inflammation. So I definitely keep this in mind when cooking for my own parents now."

This can be also be good for people with auto immune diseases, Parkinson's and even asthma sufferers. Dr. Chattoo suggests "finding spicy foods with the highest concentration of capsaicin is key. For example, raw chopped peppers would be very high in capsaicin and potentially the most beneficial."


Anti-bacterial 

Who knew spicy food can actually kill stomach bacteria? Dr. Chattoo says this is a big benefit as the peppers help prevent further infections throughout the body.


Temperature Regulation 

Elizabeth says one of the most interesting things about spicy food is that "it can heat up your body when it's cold out and, surprisingly, can cool your body off when you are hot. Eating spicy food makes you sweat and sweating actually helps your body temperature regulate itself. So while it may seem strange, definitely put more heat on your food when the heat is on."


THE BAD


Irritant


Dr. Chattoo says while capsaicin has benefits, it also has some downsides. "Capsaicin can be a very potent irritant. It can cause damage to the lining in the stomach, which in turn can cause gastritis, stomach ulcers and even intestinal disease such as colitis." Ouch!


A Bad Burn

You may like the burning sensation spicy food has on your tongue, but the flipside to that is "spicy food can also cause heartburn and/or reflux disease. The reason being: its acidic and irritant properties can cause a rather unwanted effect once it hits your insides."

If you experience any of these conditions after eating spicy food, Dr. Chattoo says you should consider "adding a side of cream or yogurt to your dish. This may help protect the digestive system by neutralizing the burning potential and temper the irritant properties that can cause harm."

Kasindorf also says that when paired with a cooked or raw vegetable, you'll lessen the burn.

Dr. Sean Lager from Gotham City Orthopedics takes a different approach saying, "If spicy food causes indigestion or GERD (gastro-esophageal reflux) then it is best to avoid such foods. If one insists on eating foods with lots of heat then they need to take a Zantac or Prilosec before hand."
 

Taste"less"


While you may think spicy food is enhancing the taste of your food, Dr. Chattoo has to be a bit of a Debbie Downer here because he says the fact is "spicy foods can also cause damage to the taste buds hampering your sense of taste."

This might be the reason why over time you feel like you can turn up the heat even more on your favorite foods — or explain why you can eat the Buffalo wings with the "too hot to handle" sauce.


The Unspeakable

You probably won't want to tell your friends if you suffer from this spicy side effect, especially not while eating!

Dr. Chattoo says spicy food can "worsen hemorrhoids by causing further damage and irritation." He says it can also make IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) worse, and even potentially cause diarrhea. Not fun.


Eye-yi-yi

If you've ever chopped peppers at home you may know about this unwanted side effect. You are chopping and seeding when all of the sudden you rub your eye.

Kasindorf points out that "you should be careful not to touch your eyes if handling anything spicy and you may not realize it, but even after hand washing it may still be on your skin. To be safe you may want to wear gloves and take them off and discard them immediately after preparing the pepper."

Every day, your body produces roughly 50 ounces of saliva. (Ewww.) But you probably don’t give your spit much thought, even though it plays a vital role in your health.

For one thing, saliva is a natural mouth disinfectant, says American Dental Association spokesperson Kimberly Harms, DDS. “It helps maintain the health of your gums, prevent tooth decay, and wash away food particles, and it provides disease-fighting substances to prevent cavities and other infections,” she says.

While saliva keeps your mouth clean, the condition of your spit can also provide clues to other things going on in your body. Pay attention to these signs:

 

1. You seem to be running low.

It may be your meds. “Over 300 medications, like decongestants and antihistamines, cause dry mouth as a side effect,” Harms says. Desert mouth tends to spring up as you age and health concerns force you to take more medication, she adds. If you’re taking something and notice you’re parched, be extra vigilant about your dental hygiene to avoid cavities, Harms says. Floss daily, brush with a fluoride-containing toothpaste twice a day, and see your dentist for regular checkups



2. It’s white and clumpy.

You may have an oral infection. The candida albicans fungus can cause a yeast infection in your mouth, which is called “thrush,” Harms says. While thrush is rare in healthy adults, people who have diabetes may be especially vulnerable since sugars in the saliva can lead to yeast growth. Your doc can prescribe an antifungal medication that you swish in your mouth to clear up the infection. (Dry mouth can also cause clumpiness.)


3. It has certain RNA molecules.

Like a window to your insides, saliva tests can provide a ton of information about your genetic makeup and hormones. From diabetes to cancer, saliva holds promise as a diagnostic tool for diseases, much like a vial of your blood, suggests research published in Clinical Chemistry. A spit test can also assess your levels of hormones like melatonin, shows research from Northwestern University. That could provide doctors insight into your body’s circadian rhythms, and so help them make better sleeping, eating, and weight loss recommendations.


4. It’s too acidic.


You can’t really taste the difference, but your mouth likes to be at or near a neutral pH (around 7), says Israel Kleinberg, DDS, PhD, a professor and division director in the Department of Oral Biology and Pathology at Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine. A dentist can quickly assess your pH with a spit strip or solution. If your pH is off, bacteria can multiply in the cozy nooks and crannies of your teeth. Acidic saliva can also erode your teeth and cause cavities, Kleinberg says. Eating foods rich in arginine, like red meat or poultry, can lower your saliva’s acidity. 5. There’s too much of it.


You may be prego. Pregnant women tend to produce more saliva,research shows. This may be due to changing hormones or just be a side effect of feeling nauseated. There are no real risks, apart from potentially spitting at your friends when you talk. (In severe cases, some women have to spit the excess saliva into cups.) Popping a piece of gum or hard candy may help you swallow all that extra spit.


6. It’s bitter or sour.

You may have reflux. This condition can allow stomach acid to bubble up into your throat, producing that telltale icky flavor. Apart from a sour taste in your mouth and throat, the most common symptom of reflux is heartburn. You may also notice issues like bad breath or nausea. If your doc diagnoses reflux, he may suggest lifestyle changes like losing weight or skipping greasy and spicy foods.


7. It tastes tacky on your tongue.


You may be a mouth breather. Inhaling and exhaling through your nose is the best way to keep your mouth happily hydrated. Since saliva is your mouth’s natural disinfectant, without it bacteria and cavities thrive, Harms says. A study in General Dentistry also found that, in kids and adults, mouth breathing can point to health issues like sleep apnea. If you think mouth breathing is an issue, mention it to your dentist or doc during your next visit.

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) Animal studies have found that MSG is toxic to the brain, and researchers believe it causes migraines in people because it dilates blood vessels and impacts nerve cells in the brain.


Reuters reports:
“In the latest research … [scientists] followed more than 10,000 adults in China for about 5.5 years on average. The researchers measured MSG intake directly by before-and-after weighing of products, such as bottles of soy sauce, to see how much people ate … Men and women who ate the most MSG (a median of 5 grams a day) were about 30 percent more likely to become overweight by the end of the study”.

MSG has been found to contribute to many neurological conditions, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Lou Gehrig’s disease, stroke, encephalitis, and brain infections.

Vegetables Oils are really high in PUFA (polyunsaturated fats). The entire composition of our bodies is around 97% saturated and monounsaturated fat. In order to renew and rebuild our cells, our bodies require fat. And if we constantly give it unhealthy and unnatural fats, it will use them with the sad end results. Vegetable Oils are dangerous for your health as they get oxidized right away when they are subjected to heat. Aluminum

BPA (Bisphenol A) mimics estrogen in our bodies, binding to the same receptors as natural female hormones which might be damaging. B\BPA is an endocrine disruptor, which means it mimics or interferes with your body’s hormones and “disrupts” your endocrine system. BPA has been linked in animal studies to cancer, obesity, infertility and diabetes.

  6. Leave it for some time until the layer dries.

  9. Optionally, you can also apply a third layer.
  10. When your mask is dry, your face will feel tight.
  11. Peel off the mask, and get rid of any residue.
  12. Pat your face dry. Apply some moisturizer.

Cinnamon and Honey Strips


Cinnamon and honey is a very powerful combination due to the high content of anti-bacterial agents in honey which guard against acne-causing bacteria. Plus, this treatment will remove anything clogging your pores. Cinnamon, on the other hand, stimulates circulation. In the end you will get radiant, healthy, smooth, and blackhead free skin.
You need:
  • organic and raw honey;
  • cinnamon powder;
  • clean cotton strips.
You do:
  1. Blend the cinnamon and honey together.
  2. Apply a layer on your blackheads, keeping the layer thin.
  3. Press a cotton strip over it.
  4. Leave it for three to five minutes.
  5. Remove the strip and wash your face.

Cleansing Sugar Scrub

Use jojoba oil as it is similar to the body’s own sebum. Except for jojoba oil, olive, grape seed or sweet almond oil are also recommended.

You need:
  • 4 tbsp jojoba oil;
  • 1 cup white or brown sugar;
  • one airtight glass jar;
  • some essential oil (optional).
You do:
  1. Stir the jojoba oil and sugar until they blend well.
  2. In case you like a fragrance, add some essential oil to it. A few drops will do.
  3. Put the mixture in a glass jar, storing it in a dark and cool place.
  4. Stir the mixture before applying it.
  5. Always apply it on a wet face.
  6. Massage your skin slowly in circular motions.
  7. Leave it on for half an hour.
  8. Wash it off with water.
  9. Apply some moisturizer.
Note: Don’t use this scrub for more than twice a week as it can lead to skin irritation.

Lemon Juice Scrub


As lemon juice is abundant in certain vitamins and nutrients that are highly efficient against blackheads, this scrub is great for this skin issue.
You need:
  • some lemon juice;
  • some honey;
  • some yogurt;
  • a pinch of salt;
  • rosewater or milk;
  • a jar or a bowl.
You do:
  1. Mix the honey, yogurt, salt and lemon juice.
  2. Applying the mixture evenly, scrub the affected area on your skin.
  3. You can also make a facial cleanser by mixing rosewater or milk with lemon juice.
  4. Use this treatment every day, for up to 10-12 days.

Green Tea


It’s widely known that green tea is great for your health in so many different ways. This might be shocking to you, but certain types of beans can be quite poisonous. Did you know that red beans were legally prohibited from being imported into South Africa because of “their potential toxicity to humans”? The main cause is a toxin called ‘phytohaemagglutinin’ or kidney bean lectin. This is a sugar based protein (glycoprotein) which is found in many types of beans such as cannellini beans. However, red kidney beans contain the highest concentrations of this toxin. It only takes a few beans to cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pains.

Kidney beans, black beans and navy beans are high in oligosaccharides. Our bodies can not produce the enzyme necessary to break down these complex sugars. When we eat beans, the oligosaccharides ferment in the lower intestine producing carbon dioxide and methane gases.

 
Antinutrients in Beans and Legumes 


Lectins 

Legumes contain relatively high concentrations of lectins. Lectins are proteins produced by most plants as a natural pesticide. When consumed in high quantity, lectins can cause a lot of health issues.

As Wikipedia explains, one example of lectin reaction in humans:

Some kinds of raw beans and especially red and kidney beans, contain a harmful toxin (the lectin Phytohaemagglutinin) that must be destroyed by cooking. A recommended method is to boil the beans for at least ten minutes; under cooked beans may be more toxic than raw beans. Cooking beans in a slow cooker, because of the lower temperatures often used, may not destroy toxins even though the beans do not smell or taste ‘bad’(though this should not be a problem if the food reaches boiling and stays there for some time).

Lectins are proteins that do not break down easily. They are resistant to stomach acid and digestive enzymes. Lectins may bind to the gut wall and damage the gut lining, are not altered by digestive enzymes, and may alter gut permeability and pass through the gut into general circulation. Lectins can cause alterations in gut function which can lead to colitis, Crohn’s Disease, Celiac-Sprue, IBS and gut permeability.



Phytic Acid and Mineral Deficiencies 


The most known anti-nutrient found in grains, beans, nuts and seeds is phytic acid (or phytate). Phytic acid, or phytate, is found in plant seeds. It serves as the main storage form of phosphorus in the seeds.Phytates actually bind to the magnesium, calcium, zinc and iron in your intestines and take them OUT of our bodies.. Phytic acid can also block protein absorption. Regulars consumption of foods high in phytic acid can lead to serious mineral deficiencies and cause a many health problems such as allergies, bone loss. hormone disruption, anemia, digestive irritability, impaired immune function, and etc.

Enzyme Inhibitors

Plant seeds also contain enzyme inhibitors that protect the plant from predators. Enzyme inhibitors are very difficult to digest. When foods are not completely digested because of enzyme inhibitors, bacteria in the large intestine try to do the job, and this can cause discomfort, bloating, and gas.

They also slow down the important enzyme activity in your body such as the uptake of trypsin, an enzyme responsible for digesting protein. Trypsin inhibitors in legumes interfere with protein digestion and may cause pancreatic disorders.

Fish are almost always caged, so they are fattier and higher in omega-6 fats. If by any chance you did not know it, increased consumption of omega-6 fatty acids creates a perfect ground for inflammation.

The ratio of omega-3 fats and omega-6 fats in farmed tilapia is so low, that it causes a dangerous imbalance inside the human body.

High dioxin level

Farmed tilapia is also high in dioxin. Moreover, these fish are 11 times higher in dioxins than wild tilapia. Dioxins are actually toxins that cause adverse reactions inside the body, and sometimes they are so fatal that they may even cause cancer.

The most dangerous thing about these chemicals is the fact that once they enter the body, they remain inside it for quite a long time. The half life of a dioxin is estimated to about 7-11 years.

This One Simple Exercise Can Restore and Repair Your Vision

This puts extreme and chronic stress on the eyes and the muscles that are attached the optic nerve, and over time, this progressively damages vision.

Yet, there is a simple, and incredibly beneficial exercise that anyone can do to stop the deterioration of eyesight and to repair and restore their vision. Palming, as it is called, is perhaps the most important exercise you can do for good eye health, and the benefits can be felt the very first time you try it.

Born legally blind, Meir Schneider, developed this exercise in a program he put together called Yoga for Your Eyes. He was born legally blind, but was absolutely determined to strengthen his eyesight sufficiently enough to earn his driver’s license.

After years of studying the eyes and training his eyes, he did just that, and has since dedicated himself to helping others improve their vision.


The method is simple and is based upon the pricinple of completely relaxing the muscles, nerves, eyelids, and parts of the eye itself that are continusously being strained by whatever behavior is causing the tension.

In essence, this is done by briefly loosening up the neck and shoulders, then sitting at a table with the palms of the hands gently pressed against the orbits of the eyes while the breath is concentrated on filling the upper body and eyes with air.

This is done for as long as is possible, meaning that you can do it for a few minutes, or relax into it for 30 minutes or an hour in order to experience extremely beneficial deep relaxation of the eyes.

Meir Schneider did this exercise for 11 hours before taking his driving test, and after even a few minutes it is easy to see how much it can help the eyes.

    Japanese researchers asked 12 young men with lower than average amounts of active brown fat to sit in a 63 degrees F room for two hours a day for six weeks. At first, the study participants burned an average of 108 extra calories in the cold, compared with more normal indoor temperatures. After six weeks, however, their bodies were burning an extra 289 calories in the cold, and scans indicated that their beige fat had indeed increased. A group of similarly aged and healthy men who were not repeatedly exposed to the cold, showed no change in their metabolism.

    Professor Michael Symonds and Dr. Helen Budge from the University’s School of Clinical Sciences say their research, published in the Journal of Pediatrics, shows that there is only about 50 g of brown fat in the neck area, and that it switches on and off throughout the day when it’s exposed to different temperatures or if you exercise or eat. The challenge now is to use this knowledge to find out how to switch on brown fat to lose weight and prevent excess weight gain.

    Research has shown that certain groups of people tend to have more brown fat than others. For example:

    • Younger people have more brown fat than elderly people
    • Slender people have more brown fat than obese people
    • People with normal blood sugar levels have more brown fat than those with high blood sugar

    Studies Show Exposure to Cold Causes Fat Cell Death


    Increased exposure to the cold helps turn on our brown fat, helping people keep weight off and lessen obesity issues. Researchers have suggested more people turn down their thermostats for a few hours each day during the winter months, and published the study in the Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.

    When taking biopsies of patients’ fat deposits, scientists found that in the winter, belly and thigh fat showed greater signs of “browning” than did fat samples taken in the summer. This suggests that cold temperatures facilitate the transformation of white fat into beige. Most homes in winter are heated to around 69F (21C), but Maastricht University Medical Centre advises turning the thermostat down to between 62F (17C) and 59F (15) for a few hours per day. Experts say that because we spend so much of our time indoors in overheated homes and offices, it can cause our bodies to not naturally burn calories to keep warm.

    An article in The New York Times highlights a study where a group of men slept in a metabolic chamber that was kept at a mildly chilly 66 degrees. After four weeks of sleeping at this temperature, the men had almost doubled their volume of brown fat, experienced an increase in insulin sensitivity, and even burned a few more calories throughout the next day.

    This practice is known as “cold thermogenesis,” and can lead to doubling of the volume of metabolically active brown fat, an increase in insulin sensitivity, and the burning of more calories.

    • Moderate intensity cold thermogenesis would be sitting in a 50-60 degree room while only wearing shorts, which is significant for brown fat formation.
    • Hardcore intensity cold thermogenesis can be achieved from wearing an ice vest and a pair of compression shorts filled with ice packs. This practice causes the body to start shivering, which then burns massive amounts of calories.

    Tim Ferriss is the author of a book called The Four-Hour Body, which includes the concept of activating your brown fat, to boost fat burning by exposing yourself to frigid temperatures.     The theory of fat cells can be frozen and killed has also been proven through another strange way called the “Popsicle Panniculitis,” that shows excessive exposure to cold from popsicles can result in the dimpling of the cheeks. The parents of a 9-month-old boy were concerned about the enlarging areas of reddish discoloration on his cheeks.The infant was born healthy, had no significant medical or family health history, had no bug bites, trauma, or illnesses, and hadn’t been around anyone who was sick. His growth and development were normal and immunizations were up-to-date.

    However, the playful infant had symmetrical non-tender lesions on his cheeks, close to the edges of the mouth. His oral cavity was normal, and nothing more was found. Further questioning revealed that 2 days before the lesions appeared, his mother had given the infant a popsicles for teething, which led to a clinical diagnosis of popsicle panniculitis. Popsicles, icepacks, and exposure to cold have all been shown to cause “popsicle” or “cold panniculitis” in children.

    It predominantly occurs during infancy after a “cold injury” and generally affects the cheeks and chin. These are the areas that are rich in subcutaneous fat and more often exposed to cold. Popsicle panniculitis usually looks like areas of reddish discoloration or as red-purple, hardened, non-tender, swellings of the cheeks 24 to 48 hours after contact with a popsicle or ice cube. The subcutaneous fat in adults has predominantly unsaturated fats, which may explain why popsicle panniculitis occurs almost exclusively in children.

    Dr. Amy Brodsky, a Chicago board certified dermatologist, was also not born with a dimple, but at the age of six, she injured her left cheek in an accident that was then treated with ice compresses for several hours. Within days, her cheek turned into a solid firm mass, and six to eight weeks later, the injury resulted in a pronounced dimple. For years she thought this was a result of her injury, until she studied Dermatology and found it to be the result of Cold Panniculitis.

     
    Freezing Fat For Spot Reduction On Trouble Areas

    For the reasons listed above, researchers are saying that something as simple as applying ice packs to areas of white fat deposits for 30 minutes to an hour, could encourage this browning process and help boost weight/fat loss,if you also follow a healthy diet and regular exercise routine.     • Firm or waxy skin which is white and completely numb
    • Skin blisters

    Treatment of Ice Pack Burn:

    You may notice having an ice pack burn if you start developing the signs and symptoms of cold induced injury such as developing blisters, feel burning, numb, itchiness and/or pain sensation in the affected area. The color of the affected skin may turn yellowish-gray. The affected area need to be re-warmed to stop the burn from becoming severe.
    • Warming process should be GRADUAL to avoid burning yourself and causing more damage to the skin.
    • Soak the burned skin in warm water. The National Institute of Health suggests the temperature of water to be between 104 and 108 degree Fahrenheit for 20 minutes (never use hot water).
    • You can use warm compresses or wrap the area with a blanket.
    • Avoid massaging or moving the damaged area as this can cause more damage.
    • Avoid using direct dry heat to warm the affected area such as radiator or hair dryer as these areas are numb and can burn easily.
