Have You Ever Stored Potatoes in the Fridge? This is Why You Should Never Do it Again

Some foods simply taste better when they’re kept cold – but putting potatoes in the refrigerator is potentially harmful

The FSA warn that potatoes are the most important food to keep out the fridge

When it comes to storing food, there is always conflicting advice or old wives’ tales about the best thing to do.

You might think that colder is better – after all, fridges are for keeping food fresh – and you could be tempted to put all your perishable groceries in there.

But there’s one food you should never refrigerate, according to the Foods Standards Agency .

The FSA website explains: “The most important food not to keep in the fridge are potatoes.

“When these are stored in the fridge, the starch in the potato is converted to sugar. When baked or fried, these sugars combine with the amino acid asparagine and produce the chemical acrylamide, which is thought to be harmful.”

Baking refrigerated potatoes could produce the chemical

Raw potatoes should be stored in a cool, dry place – just not in the refrigerator.

What is acrylamide?
This is a chemical used in industrial processes such as the production of paper, dyes and plastics. Traces can generally be found in consumer products, such as food packaging – but it has also been found in foods.

Why is it dangerous?

A quick online search of acrylamide immediately tells you that the chemical has been linked to cancer.

The cancer.gov website explains: “Studies in rodent models have found that acrylamide exposure poses a risk for several types of cancer.”

What is it found in?

Potato chips and French fries have been found to contain higher levels of the substance compared with other foods.

Keep them in a cool, dry place

Should I stop eating certain foods?

The FSA says: “The Agency does not advise people to stop eating any of these foods, but you should follow Department of Health advice from the NHS Choices website on eating a healthy, balanced diet.

“We also recommend that, when making chips at home, they are cooked to a light golden colour. Bread should be toasted to the lightest colour acceptable.

“However, manufacturers’ instructions for frying or oven-heating foods should be followed carefully.”

If you’re making chips, make sure they are cooked to a light golden colour

Should we be worried?

According to cancer.gov, “the World Health Organization and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations stated that the levels of acrylamide in foods pose a ‘major concern’ and that more research is needed to determine the risk of dietary acrylamide exposure.

Although the chemical has been linked with cancer in studies with rodents, human studies are still incomplete.

In certain hair salons lies a relatively unknown risk to your health and potentially even your life! This danger was brought to light by a young woman, Elizabeth Smith, whose trip to the Blowbunny Salon in San Francisco, ended with her being rushed to the emergency room.

Upon arrival she was evaluated with a CT scan which showed that an artery in her neck had been damaged. The doctors explained to her that this had caused her to have a stroke! How in the world could this have happened from simply getting her hair washed at the salon sink?!

Apparently, this phenomenon is well-known to doctors and hair salon owners as well; it actually has been dubbed Beauty Parlor Stroke. It is critical that salons have chairs that recline into a position that allows your neck to rest comfortably in an appropriate lip on the sink. Without ample support that leaves your neck at a healthy angle, anyone can be at risk for what happened to Elizabeth.

Listen to her story in the video below in which you will hear about her 8 month recovery, and her desire to warn others about this relatively unknown danger, so that this completely avoidable hazard, never has to cause damage to others. It should also be noted that adjustments should always be made for differences in height, that could also impact the angle of the neck.

Anti-Aging Secrets – The Sweet Potato is the Fountain of Youth

Can Japanese sweet potatoes take the place of a plastic surgeon? Actor Olivia Munn thinks so.

Perhaps looking to deflect recent speculation that she’s had cosmetic work done, the “X-Men: Apocalypse” star took to Instagram Tuesday to reveal the secret behind her radical change of appearance.
“Japanese potatoes … help keep wrinkles away,” she wrote.
Munn has said she eats a baked one every day. The purple tuber, known as satsuma-imo, is similar to a regular sweet potato, high in antioxidants and healthier than a white potato. The satsuma-imo trumps the Idaho white with fewer carbs (24 grams vs. 37 grams) and calories (113 vs. 170). But a beauty secret?

While some anti-aging products cost upwards of $1,000, Olivia Munn‘s age-defying skin secret can be purchased at the supermarket for just a few dollars. The 34-year-old Newsroom actress keeps her skin line-free with a secret potato recipe that actually isn’t too difficult to prepare . You can “Enjoy watching those lines on your face disappear!” after roasting Satsumaimo Japanese sweet potatoes with olive oil and cinnamon.

You can order them from Japanese markets. They also come in pill form, which I tired but I really didn’t see much of a difference. Taking the actual food substance makes a huge difference.

Olivia Munn’s Anti-Aging Potato Recipe

Ingredients:
  • 1 medium sized Satsumaimo Japanese sweet potato
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Cinnamon
Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 400 F.
  2.  Slice the sweet potato into 1-inch thick rounds and place on a baking sheet.
  3. Drizzle each slice with extra virgin olive oil on both sides and sprinkle the top with cinnamon.
  4. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the bottom of each slice is golden brown.

Sweet Potato Facial Mask
  • 1/2 peeled, boiled sweet potato, cut into chunks
  • 1 Tbsp honey
  • 1 tsp ginger powder
  • 1 Tbsp milk, cream, half & half, rice milk, coconut milk, or almond milk (unsweetened)
Boil your sweet potato until it falls apart easily when you stick a fork in it (about 15-20 minutes). Strain out the water (reserve some sweet potato water, if you’d like, and rinse your face with it once a day for the next 3 days – bonus!). Place all ingredients into a food processor or blender and let it run until the mask is very smooth. This mask has an exceptional texture – PERFECT for a food-on-your-face mask that doesn’t fall off, drip, or otherwise make a mess.

Slather the mask onto a freshly washed face. Leave the mask on for 15-20 minutes. Rinse well, scrubbing lightly with a washcloth.

Finish by smoothing on a VERY light layer of olive oil over your face – just makes the entire experience heavenly!

Serves: 3 applications

Shelf life: None – refrigerate up to 3 days

Get Your Hyaluronic Acid

I’m really big on hyaluronic acid, it’s so important. It’s something that we develop in our body and as we get older it starts to diminish like with collagen. But unlike collagen, its only purpose is to carry water to the parts of your body that need it. I started eating these special potatoes that are high in hyaluronic acid.

Hyaluronic acid, with its remarkable ability to keep tissue moist, is particularly effective in treating wrinkles and dry skin. It maintains skin elasticity and even speeds up the healing process for wounds and scars. Hyaluronic acid is also believed to promote healthy eyes and heart valve function. The body’s hyaluronic acid levels decrease with age. In theory, sustaining optimal hyaluronic acid levels could retard the aging process, prolong a youthful appearance, and sustain life.

Connective tissues of humans and animals contain Hyaluronic acid. It plays a key role in cushioning and lubricating the body and is abundant in the eyes, joints and heart valves. A powerful antioxidant, hyaluronic acid is perhaps best known for its ability to bond water to tissue. Since the beginning of time, people have been searching for an effective way to reverse the aging process. Hyaluronic acid is seen by many to be the Fountain of Youth, and there are plenty of natural sources available to make it part of a healthy diet.

Think of it this way:
Your body needs a variety of ingredients in the right proportions to function, just like you need a variety of ingredients to make a cake. If you are making a cake and you are short on eggs, it’s okay to add more eggs, up to a certain amount. If you are not short on eggs, then just adding more eggs is going to ruin your cake. If you are short on flour but not eggs, but you keep adding more eggs but no extra flour, you are really going to end up with a mess.
It’s the same basic principle with your body, only on a larger and much more complex scale. Some people might have defective collagen because they are short on vitamin C. For those people, getting extra vitamin C in their diets would probably be good. But taking massive doses of vitamin C, especially if a person isn’t deficient in vitamin C to begin with, probably isn’t a good thing.

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid (also called Hyaluronan) is a component of connective tissue whose function is to cushion and lubricate. Hyaluronan occurs throughout the body in abundant amounts in many of the places people with hereditary connective tissue disorders have problems such as joints, heart valves and eyes. Hyaluronic acid fastens onto our collagen and elastin and creates cartilage. It’s found in every tissue of our body, and is responsible for carrying out a number of vital functions.

Hyaluronic acid has become especially popular in both the medical and cosmetic fields. Medical professionals are employing HA to alleviate conditions like arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, dry eyes and pain associated with joint damage. It has also been effective in increasing mobility, alertness, sleep quality, muscle strength, sexual potency, wound healing and bone density. A majority of medical treatments that employ HA are obtained from rooster combs. Rooster combs are considered to contain the most potent variety of HA and are administered via injections. Hyaluronic acid abnormalities are a common thread in connective tissue disorders. Interestingly, they are also common biochemical anomalies in most of the individual features of connective tissue disorders such as mitral valve prolapse, TMJ, osteoarthritis, and keratoconus.

What foods contain hyaluronic acid?

Soy

Soybeans contain high amounts of phytoestrogens–plant sources of estrogen that act like estrogen in your body. Estrogen helps your body produce more hyaluronic acid. Consume soybean foods such as tofu, tempeh, soy cheese and soy milk.

Scientists at the Yakult Central Institute for Microbiological Research in Japan revealed soy milk extracts fermented with bifidobacterium (a “friendly bacteria”) significantly enhanced the production of HA when applied topically on the skin for two weeks. This did not work with unfermented soy milk extracts.

Animal Parts

According to Harvey Blatt’s 2008 book “America’s food: what you don’t know about what you eat”: “The red combs of roosters and hens are one of the world’s richest sources for the sugar molecule hyaluronan, a compound some doctors are calling the next big thing after Botox for removing wrinkles.” Aside from red combs, animal parts such as joints and tendons are rich in hyaluronic acid, as are human joints and tendons. Make a broth or stew of animal joints, bones, tendons and skin. Chicken soup made with chicken legs and feet is an ideal HA source.

Red Wine

Resveratrol, found in the skins of grapes and red wine, helps stimulate hyaluronic acid in your body.
In 1997, researchers at Northwestern University Medical School learned that resveratrol in red wine, highly concentrated in grape skin, is a phytoestrogen. Drink red wine or red grape juice to increase estrogen, which produces more hyaluronic acid in your body.

Starchy Root Vegetables

In November 2000, a ABC News Prime Time Live program revealed something interesting about the people of Yuzuri Hara, Japan, called the “village of long life.” They all have smooth, wrinkle-free skin, good eyesight, health and energy. And, as I said earlier, live well into their 80s and 90s. The people of Yuzuri Hara grow and eat starchy root vegetables, which stimulate the body to produce hyaluronic acid, including a small sweet-potato-like vegetable called “tamaji.”

Arctium Lappa Fruit

Studies at Research & Development, Beiersdorf AG in Hamburg, Germany, revealed success using Arctium lappa (A. lappa) fruit extract to reduce signs of aging. A. lappa, which contains hyaluronic acid, was part of a formula and applied topically. After 4 weeks, the crow’s feet wrinkles were “significantly reduced.” Scientists concluded A. lappa effectively regenerates the skin structures to reduce wrinkles.

Magnesium is needed in the body to synthesize hyaluronic acid, so consuming foods rich in magnesium, like avocados, broccoli, peanuts, potatoes, soy and spinach can keep hyaluronic acid levels from dropping too low.

Estrogen and hyaluronic acid have somewhat of a symbiotic relationship. When the level of one rises, so does the level of the other. Soy products, like tofu and soy beans, have been shown to increase estrogen levels, making them an indirect source for hyaluronic acid.

Zinc deficiencies seem to coincide with low hyaluronic acid. Consuming brown rice, peanuts, potatoes, pumpkin seeds and other zinc-rich foods could alleviate the problem.
Does it come in supplement form?

Essentially, hyaluronic acid is a dietary supplement said to reduce the accumulation of fluid and decrease inflammation in the joints and connective tissues of the body. Typically, it is found in tablet form and taken in a 40 or 50 milligram dosage twice a day, but can be given hypodermically to the affect area. The tablets are not a prescription medication, so bottles of hyaluronic acid can pretty much be found anywhere that sells vitamins and supplements, this would include pharmacies, big box stores and supplement dealers like GNC and Vitamin World.

Warnings

Researchers at the University of California San Francisco have discovered abnormally high levels of hyaluronic acid could contribute to tumor progression in breast cancer. The University of Minnesota’s Department of Surgery has found similar results regarding colon cancer.

While a number of studies have linked abnormal levels of HA to either connective tissue disorders (CTDs) or conditions common in CTDs, such as premature aging, there are also a number of studies on Pubmed noting associations of high levels of HA to some forms of cancer. With HA as with other substances in the human body, such as estrogen and cholesterol, there are most likely optimal levels, and disease often occurs when these levels become out of range in either direction. Low estrogen levels have been linked to bone loss, while high estrogen levels have been associated with breast cancer. High cholesterol levels have been linked to heart attacks and stroke, while low levels have been linked to bleeding problems and depression. HA has been studied less than either cholesterol or estrogen, but the prudent path would be to assume that the body has optimal levels of HA, as it does for cholesterol, estrogen and many other substances.

As such, it is always prudent to consult your doctor before you decide to take HA or any other type of supplement to make sure it is an appropriate treatment for your particular health condition.

She Soaked Her Feet In Vinegar For 10 Minutes! The Reason?

In spite of its pungent odor and unappealing murkiness, it has been lauded as a beauty MVP, because of its versatility. As it is described in this First Blush article, people are applying ACV to work as a facial toner and as a clarifying hair rinse. In the video below, the Huffington Post put widely touted apple cider vinegar “hacks” to the test.

Similar to most beauty products, your mileage with apple cider vinegar may differ, and it can be more effective at performing certain tasks over others. The important thing to remember, is before applying it to your face, you should apply a small, diluted amount to a test patch of skin and wash it off immediately if you notice any adverse effects.

Additionally, you may want to try a foot soak. As the blogger Gaytha Stewart combined. He combined vinegar, but he does not specify what type of vinegar, he uses in his blog post, with Listerine mouthwash in order to revolutionize his pedicure routine. The blogger Stewart claims that after soaking his feet in the concoction, they were “amazingly smooth.”

Soda Blocks Brain Repair

Please don’t give your child sugar after a brain injury. This definitely includes the fructose in a soda. Action Alert!

New evidence shows that processed sugars prevent the brain’s ability to heal after head trauma. As Dr. Russell Blaylock reported in his December 2015 Blaylock Wellness Report, laboratory rats were trained for five days to escape a maze.

Next, the rats were randomly assigned to groups that were fed either plain water or fructose-infused water for six weeks.

Soda Blocks Brain Repair

In the seventh week, the rats underwent a procedure to reproduce the aspects of a human traumatic brain injury.

After another six weeks, the rats were retested on their ability to escape the maze.

The rats on the sugar diet took 30% longer to finish the maze than those who drank plain water.

The sugar diet had other negative effects on the brain as well.

The researchers found that sugar impaired with the ability of neurons to communicate with each other, rewire connections after injury, record memories, and produce enough energy for the body to perform basic functions.

One of the scientists summed up the main takeaway from the study:
“Reduce fructose in your diet if you want to protect your brain.”
The implication is to reduce fructose intake even if you are not brain injured—but especially if you are.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that 1.6 to 3.8 million sports-and-recreation-related concussions occur in the US each year, not to mention all the soldiers with brain injuries returning home from fighting overseas.

About 5 million Americans live with ongoing disability from a traumatic brain injury.

In connecting the dots here, keep in mind that the average American consumes about twenty-seven pounds of high-fructose corn syrup each year.

Yet no one is even warning parents to eliminate sodas and other high-fructose drinks and foods when their children are injured.

Action Alert! Write to the FDA and tell them to issue a warning to doctors and parents about this new research. Explain how fructose keeps the brain from repairing itself, especially in patients who have brain injuries. Please send your message immediately!

5 Foods That Help Hinder Cancerous Tumor Growth

$

Cancer affects millions of people worldwide. And while the focus thus far has centred largely on ways to heal this disease, an equal or greater emphasis needs to be placed on ways to prevent it.

Our lifestyle choices have a lot to do with our overall well-being, as well as our risk of contracting serious illnesses, and there are a variety of functional foods that can serve to not just keep us healthy, but even kill cancer cells.

There are a plethora of proteins, enzymes, and codings in our immune system that can work to kill cancer cells.

Many may feel like cancer cannot be defeated by the human immune system alone, but that’s simply not true; rather, it is what we choose to put in our bodies that can either prohibit these cells or allow them to thrive.

Toxins through food and chemical pollution can hinder the immune system’s natural function to work properly and keep cancer cells at bay, but if we choose to eat well regularly, we do ourselves a multitude of favors.

Here are 5 foods that you may already have in your home that can suppress the growth of tumor development.

1. Turmeric

A vibrant spice rich in taste, it is the curcumin in turmeric that works wonders. An extremely powerful antioxidant, it is well-known for its many health benefits, and research has found that curcumin’s anti-inflammatory effects work to inhibit the growth of tumor cells.

Over 700 turmeric studies have found it a suitable tool for warding off chronic, debilitating diseaseswithout causing negative side effects in the process.

Circumin also promotes anti-angiogenesis, which means that it can help prevent the development of the additional blood supply which cancer cells rely on to grow.

2. Green Tea

If you’re a tea drinker, green tea ought to be at the top of your list, as the group of plant flavonoids called catechins it contains have been found to provide some incredible health benefits to the body.

Research has found that green tea’s primary catechin, called epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate (EGCG), can block tumor necrosis factor (TNF) naturally.

In fact, scientists at Purdue Universityconcluded that:
“In the presence of EGCg, the cancer cells literally failed to grow or enlarge after division. Then, presumably because they did not reach the minimum size needed to divide, they underwent programmed cell death, or apoptosis.”

3. Tomatoes

This hearty fruit has been found to cut chances of developing coronary heart disease as well as lowering the risk of several types of cancer.

For instance, lycopene, part of the carotenoid family that gives red fruits and vegetables their color, is a free-radical fighting chemical that tomatoes possess in high concentrations.

One study found that high intake of tomatoes and tomato products, particularly tomato sauce, reduced risk of total prostate cancer by 35% and aggressive prostate cancer by 53%.

4. Garlic

This popular vegetable, often used as a flavoring in cooking, is high in sulfur, and contains arginine, oligosaccharides, flavonoids, and selenium, all of which have been touted for their many health benefits.

Studies have found a link between an increased intake of garlic and reduced risk of cancers including stomach, colon, esophagus, pancreas, and breast.

In the Iowa Women’s Health Study of 127 foods, tested with 41,387 women, garlic was found to be the only fruit or vegetable to produce an effect.

The researchers concluded that one or more servings of fresh garlic a week was attributed to a 35% less risk of colon cancer, and 50% less distal colon cancer.

5. Hemp

Hemp, has been revered for centuries as a useful and valuable ancient plant for making things such as rope, textiles, auto parts, cosmetics, dynamite, supplements, food, and medicine.

Hemp oil is specifically touted for its ability to heal the whole body. In fact, it’s been found to increase levels of melatonin thousands of times higher than normal, which can slow or stop the growth of many forms of cancer cells, and treat cancer as well.

One study concluded that melatonin can inhibit breast cancer cell growth, as well as angiogenesis, cancer cell invasion, and telomerase activity.

If You See A Spot Like This On Your Child’s Cheek, Go To The Hospital ASAP

Spring is here and summer is on it’s way. As parents we are happy that our kids can spend more playtime outside, and most of us slather them in sun block, to protect them from the harmful UV rays of the sun. Depending on what part of the country we live in, and how woodsy or grassy the area is, determines the extent to which we check our kids for ticks that could potentially carry lyme disease.

If You See A Spot Like This On Your Child’s Cheek, Go To The Hospital ASAP

Checking for tick bites as soon as your child has come in from outdoor play is critical. Ticks take some time to fully imbed in the skin, so that if you can remove it fully with a tweezer, this may happen in time to prevent the transmission of Borrelia Burgdorferi, should the tick carry it. Lyme Disease is no laughing matter; it isn’t just something that runs it’s course, and life goes on. If not properly treated, often with several courses of antibiotics it can potentially leave both children and adults with long term, chronic debilitating effects on their health.

Luckily 70-80% of people who contract Lyme Disease have a visible erythema migrans (EM) rash, that appears like a red bull’s eye. It is often initially accompanied by extreme fatigue. Your child, or anyone seeing this rash should immediately be seen by their doctor, to be tested and begin antibiotic therapy quickly.

The video you are about to watch below, does a very comprehensive job of describing initial symptoms, and the problems often encountered with only one course of antibiotics. The faster and more comprehensive the treatment, the better the chance that the later, more grave symptoms can be prevented from occurring.

Later symptoms that become more chronic and debilitating, without or with only partial treatment of Lyme Disease, include: Headaches; Severe Joint Pain and Swelling; Facial or Bell’s Palsy; Heart Palpitations or an Irregular Heartbeat (Lyme Carditis); Dizziness; Difficulty Breathing; Inflammation of the Brain and Spinal Cord; Nerve and Shooting Pains; Numbness; Hand and Foot Tingling and Difficulty with Short-Term Memory.

WATCH THE VIDEO:

For further discussion of these dangers, as well as other dangers to the Heart and Central Nervous System, watching the upcoming video is critical. The narrator will also advise you on the best modes of prevention, and why assuming that one course of antibiotic treatment is enough, can leave you vulnerable to the later, more serious symptoms.

Prevention and Proper Treatment can make a significant difference in the quality and longevity of people’s lives!

Your Are Not Fat! Your Stomach Is Bloated And Here Is How To Get Rid Of It

According to many people, bloating is excessive farting or bleaching as they feel full and their stomach is in the size of a ball. It is an issue which usually appears after a heavy meal, but there are some people who feel bloated all the time. The reasons for this issue to appear are the following:
  • You don’t drink enough water – many health problems appear due to the body not being hydrated enough. This is caused by coffee and alcohol and if you drink them a lot, you will have to consume 6-8 glasses of water as well. When our body is deprived of water, it starts using the liquids it can find, thus bloating may be caused due to fluid retention. For that reason you have to start drinking lots of water.
  • Constipation – once you feel better after you empty your bowels the main issue is constipation, meaning that you have to add fiber in your diet as the gasses are trapped behind the feces. Consume fiber gradually, not all once because it may worsen the problem. Use whole grain bread instead of white bread, drink a lot of smoothies and eat more berries.
  • You are too stressed – some studies say that bloating can be caused by too much stress as when the system is stressed the brain prevents the digestive system from functioning properly. Also, you may be bloated by constipation and stomach ache. Once you relieve the stress, you will solve the issue with bloating.
  • You eat too fast – when the food is being chewed, the body starts processing it more slowly and bloating may appear. Also, it is very significant to eat in small bites.
  • Carbs – the issue with bloating can appear due to eating too much carbs, but you may solve this problem by eating low-carb foods. Also, replace sugar and alcohol with vegetable and fruit.

How Fasting Can Help You Live Longer

$

The types and quality of food you eat influences more than how much you weigh. Food has an effect on your metabolism, insulin production, leptin release and a myriad of other hormonal and chemical balances.

Scientists are also examining the way fasting affects cellular and mitochondrial function, and longevity.

They’ve found the cells in your body react to fasting in much the same way as they do to exercise. In other words, when placed under stress— be it exercise or fasting–the reaction creates changes at the cellular level that helps extend your lifespan.1

For starters, fasting shifts your body from using glucose as its primary fuel to fat, and being an efficient fat-burner benefits your health beyond weight loss.

Although much of the research is on fasting or intermittent fasting, the newer term is sometimes referred to as TRF (Time Restricted Feeding) which promotes eating in a narrow window of time, typically 6-8 hours.

Efficient Fat Burning Promotes Health

Fat is a far cleaner burning fuel than carbohydrates and generates far less free radicals,

Glucose is an inherently “dirty” fuel as it generates far more reactive oxygen species (ROS) than fat. But to burn fat, your cells must be healthy and normal. Cancer cells, for example, cannot burn fat, and this why a healthy high fat diet appears to be such an effective anti-cancer strategy.

We’re now starting to realize that mitochondrial dysfunction is at the core of virtually all diseases, and nutritional intervention — not only what you eat, but also when, and how often — is of key importance.

To summarize, mitochondrial health is promoted by eating real food; avoiding food at least 3 hours before bedtime; and intermittently fasting.

What Happens When You Fast?

Fasting is a biological stressor with several amazing health benefits, including normalizing your insulin and leptin sensitivity, promoting human growth hormone (HGH) production, reducing oxidative stress and lowering triglyceride levels.

And now a team of researchers from the University of Southern California believe they have discovered yet another benefit: The regeneration of stem cells.2

During the initial 14-16 hours of not eating, your body burns through almost all of your carb (glycogen) stores in your muscles and liver. Once those glycogen stores have been depleted, your body turns to fat stores for energy. Intermittent fasting teaches your body to efficiently burn fat for fuel.

Intermittent Fasting Can Help Regenerate Your Entire Immune System

In an adult, the undifferentiated stem cells found in tissues and organs are used by the body to renew itself. The primary role of these cells is to maintain and repair the tissues where they are found.3

Another effect of fasting is autophagy. When this vital process occurs in the mitochondria it is called mitophagy. This is when your body begins to eat itself in an orderly pattern to remove damage parts from your body.

Although it sounds like something you’d want to avoid, this particular process is healthy and helps your body to “clean house.” According to Colin Champ, M.D. and certified radiation oncologist at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center:4
“Think of it as our body’s innate recycling program. Autophagy makes us more efficient machines to get rid of faulty parts, stop cancerous growths, and stop metabolic dysfunction like obesity and diabetes.”
Mitophagy happens at the cellular level where the membranes break down and your body recycles what’s healthy and uses the rest for energy, or to make new parts. This process may also play a role in controlling the amount of inflammation in your body.

When scientists engineered rats incapable of autophagy they grew up sleepier, fatter, with higher cholesterol levels and impaired brains.5,6

Three Strategies That Promote Mitophagy and Cellular Regeneration

There are three ways to elevate your body’s ability to destroy worn out cells and regenerate new ones. The first is exercise, which puts stress on your body, tears down muscle, and helps your body to rebuild new tissue.

A highly effective way to boost mitophagy is intermittent fasting. Some studies even suggest intermittent fasting can improve cognitive function, brain structure, and help you to learn more easily.7 These studies were completed on rats and it wasn’t totally clear if the benefits resulted specifically from autophagy.

Yet another way to mimic mitophagy is to use a high fat diet consisting mainly of high quality healthy fats with a moderate amount of high quality protein and minimal non- fiber carbohydrates in the ratio represented in the graph below The idea is to reduce your carbohydrate intake to a level that your body has no other choice but to burn fat for fuel.

Research demonstrates this diet will help your body fight cancer, lower your risk of diabetes, fight some brain disorders, and can reduce seizure activity in 50 percent of children on the diet by at least 50 percent.8,9

Keep in mind that monitoring your protein intake is just as important as cutting non-vegetable carbs. If you eat more protein than what your body needs, you will prevent the activation of pathways associated with stem cell and immune system regeneration. This includes the mTOR, PKA, and IGF pathways.10

Timing Your Meals Right Can Cut Free Radical Damage

There is compelling evidence that when cells are supplied with fuel when fuel is not needed, the cells leak electrons that react with oxygen, producing free radicals. Free radicals are responsible for damage to your cells, DNA, and have been linked with an increased potential for illness and disease.

The best way to reduce free radical damage is not to take antioxidants but to make sure you are burning a clean fuel like fat and not carbs. However, when your caloric intake is greater than necessary, and especially when consumed at a time when you have low energy needs, like when you are sleeping, it increases the number of free radicals produced.11

Studies have demonstrated the link between free radicals and mitochondrial DNA damage, which is then responsible for producing nuclear damage that can result in cancer. In a study from France, researchers demonstrated in a mice model that intermittent fasting in mice with lymphoma reduced the amount of free radical, increased their longevity and reduced the death rate.12

This is also why I recommend not eating at least 3 hours before bedtime. Your body will use the least amount of calories when sleeping, so the last thing you need is excess fuel at this time, as it will generate excessive free radicals that can damage tissues, accelerate aging, and contribute to chronic disease.

Personally I stop eating around 4 – 5 PM, but this time varies depending on what my blood sugars are running. My goal is to have a fasting blood sugar below 60, but certainly below 70.

I personally strongly disagree with fasts much longer than 18 hours as it will drive most people into burning lean muscle mass for fuel. This is why I recommend 16-18 hours of fasting each day and eating all of your calories in the remaining six to eight hours. This reduces your body’s dependence on carbohydrates and glycogen on a daily basis. Research has demonstrated a lowered cancer risk and improved weight management in both humans and animals.13

Intermittent Fasting
How to Support Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent fasting is healthy for most people. However, if you suffer from diabetes, hypoglycemia, chronic adrenal stress, or cortisol dysregulation, you must take specific precautions and work with your physician and dietitian to ensure healthy balance of nutrition and fasting. Pregnant and nursing mothers should not fast as their babies need the nutrition to grow and develop appropriately.

Adding this type of fasting to your health regimen may be challenging but the rewards are significant. Begin by using a fasting schedule you think you can maintain. Don’t get discouraged if you eat more on your fasting days than you had planned. Drink plenty of water and tea to help feel full and satisfied during the day.

Get support from friends or relatives. Starting a program with someone else, especially in the same house, will give you an accountability partner with whom you can share tips that work for you. When you know that someone else is counting on you to walk this journey with them, you’re less likely to eat more than you planned.

To sum it all up, intermittent fasting improves your immune system and mitochondrial function, reduces your inflammatory process and the amount of free radicals in your body. It is also dramatically helps to slow down the aging process, especially if you eat your macronutrients in the ratios in the chart above. In other words, going without food now and then is not going to kill you — on the contrary, it may be one of the keys to living a longer and healthier life.

The Reason Why Nutella Is Poisonous For You And Your Children

$

Every day, millions of people buy this product and feed it to their families believing that they are feeding them a nutritious product; when in reality it's the opposite. The scariest thing that people don't know about Nutella is that it contains monosodium glutamate (MSG), also known as E621.

It's cleverly hidden inside an artificial flavor called vanillin which is labeled on every Nutella jar. It also contains the toxic GMO emulsifier soy lecithin and palm oil whose extraction is ravaging forests and wildlife throughout the world.

Nutella was introduced in 1964 by the Italian company Ferrero who still manufactures the product, however they do have local manufacturers in many countries. As kids we went crazy over nutella in the 70s and 80s, but parents back then weren't taking as many precautions as they are today, especially when it comes to reading ingredient labels.

According to the official US Nutella Website, the ingredients are as follows:“sugar, palm oil, hazelnuts, cocoa, skim milk, reduced minerals whey (milk), soy lecithin as emulsifier, vanillin: an artificial flavor”. Nutella claims their product contains “No Artificial Colors and No Artificial Preservatives”.

The definition of artificial is “made or produced by human beings rather than occurring naturally.” Every single one of their ingredients goes through very heavy processing which would imply that the natural state of these ingredients which contribute to color and preservation is completely absent from their formula. Their soy lecithin alone is about as artificial as an emulsifier/preservative gets.

Nutella contains 67% saturated fat and processed sugar by weight. A two-tablespoon (37 gram) serving of Nutella contains 200 calories, 11 grams of fat, 3.5 of which are saturated and 21 grams of sugar. To put that into perspective, a typical chocolate and nut candy bar has 250 to 300 calories and 12 to 16 grams of fat.

Vanillin: An Artificial Flavor (MSG)

When most people see vanillin, they think…oh it has vanilla. However, this is likely one of the most harmful ingredients in Nutella. Scent and flavor of vanillin are nothing but chemicals. When we talk about actual real-life non-imitation vanilla flavor, what we're really talking about is a bunch of molecules that are extracted from a vanilla bean.

The grandest chemical of all of these is vanillin. Sure, vanilla has plenty of other odor molecules, but vanillin is about 95% of the scent. And, thanks to technology, you can make it cheaply from petroleum and in a lab. The largest vanillin manufacturers in the world are in China and more than 90% of food products manufactured contain vanillin from China including Nutella.

The worst part of vanillin is that it contains unlabeled MSG. It is not a nutrient, vitamin, or mineral and has no health benefits. The part of MSG that negatively affects the human body is the “glutamate”, not the sodium. The breakdown of MSG typically consists of 78% glutamate, 12% sodium, and about 10% water. Any glutamate added to a processed food is not and can not be considered naturally occurring. Natural glutamate in plants and animals is known as L-glutamic acid. MSG Lurks As A Slow Poison In Common Food Items Without Your Knowledge and vanillin is one of them.

MSG has been proven to act as an excitotoxin which stimulates the reward system of the brain, so we think it tastes better (than it actually does) and consequently consume more.

There are a growing number of Clinicians and Scientists who are convinced that excitotoxins play a critical role in the development of several neurological disorders, including migraines, seizures, infections, abnormal neural development, certain endocrine disorders, specific types of obesity, and especially the neurodegenerative diseases; a group of diseases which includes: ALS, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease, and olivopontocerebellar degeneration.

Palm Oil

Palm oil is taken from the fruit of the oil palm tree. The use of palm oil in processed foods, its most widespread application in the United States, jumped sharply after government authorities took aggressive steps to reduce the trans fat content in processed foods. The Center for Science in the Public Interest reports that palm oil is second only to soybean oil in terms of worldwide popularity as a food oil.

In support of its warnings about the dangers of palm oil, the center cites two meta-analyses that show that palm oil raises blood cholesterol levels. A 1997 British analysis evaluated 147 human trials and concluded that palmitic acid, an active ingredient in palm oil, raised total blood cholesterol levels. A Dutch analysis, released in 2003, weighed data from 35 clinical studies and found that palmitic acid significantly increased the ratio of total cholesterol to so-called “good cholesterol,” a widely recognized risk factor for heart disease.

In a study published in a 1999 issue of “Plant Foods for Human Nutrition,” three Nigerian biochemistry researchers extol some of the nutrients found in fresh palm oil, but point out that the oil in an oxidized state can threaten physiological and biochemical functions of the body. They acknowledge that manufacturers of processed foods oxidize palm oil in their products for a variety of culinary purposes, meaning that much of the palm oil consumers eat is in an oxidized state. The dangers of oxidized palm oil include organotoxicity of the heart, kidney, liver and lungs, as well as reproductive toxicity, the researchers claim. Additionally, they note, oxidized palm oil can cause an increase in free fatty acids, phospholipids and cerebrosides.

Indonesia has achieved its goal of becoming one of the two largest palm-oil producers and exporters in the world. But at what cost? At least half of the world's wild orangutans have disappeared in the last 20 years; biologically viable populations of orangutans have been radically reduced in size and number; and 80 percent of the orangutan habitat has either been depopulated or totally destroyed. The trend shows no sign of abating: government maps of future planned land use show more of the same, on an increasing scale.

In Malaysia, peat swamp forests are being obliterated, and the disappearing forests endangering the habitat of the “pygmy elephant — the smallest elephant on Earth — the clouded leopard, the long-nosed tapir and many rare birds.”

As word spreads about the devastation that palm oil cultivation can cause, people are beginning to take notice and companies are beginning to make changes. Sustainable palm oil is in its infancy, and according to Worldwatch Institute, palm oil sustainability criteria remain controversial.

Check out saynotopalmoil.com to get a full perspective on what's happening throughout the world because of palm oil. Palm Oil is simply another ingredient that needs to be banned from our food supply. We don't need it if it's not sustainable in the health of our ecosystems or wildlife.

Soy Lecithin

Soybean lecithin comes from sludge left after crude soy oil goes through a “degumming” process. It is a waste product containing solvents and pesticides and has a consistency ranging from a gummy fluid to a plastic solid. Before being bleached to a more appealing light yellow, the color of lecithin ranges from a dirty tan to reddish brown. The hexane extraction process commonly used in soybean oil manufacture today yields less lecithin than the older ethanol-benzol process, but produces a more marketable lecithin with better color, reduced odor and less bitter flavor.

Today soy lecithin is ubiquitous in the processed food supply. It is most commonly used as an emulsifier to keep water and fats from separating in foods such as margarine, peanut butter, chocolate candies, ice cream, coffee creamers and infant formulas. It also helps prevent product spoilage making it a preservative and extending shelf life in the marketplace.

The majority of soy sources in the world are now genetically modified (GM). Researchers have clearly identified GM foods as a threat to the environment, pollution of soils and a long-term threat to human health with links to of the world with unnatural genetic material that may have unknown long-term consequences with links to decreased fertility, immunological alterations in the gut and the exacerbation and creation of allergies.

Genetically engineered soy contains high concentrations of plant toxicants. The presence of high levels of toxicants in the GM soy represent thousands of plant biochemicals many of which have been shown to have toxic effects.

Reduced Minerals Whey

Whey protein production starts with dairy cows and was actually considered a waste byproduct of cheese production. It was typically discarded.

Dairy companies now recognize the value of whey and have set up factories to concentrate and purify it from sources that are substandard from cows fed GMO foods, antibiotics and hormones to boost their production. Reduced-minerals ends up being a dark cream-colored product which companies acquire raw from the same handful of manufacturers.

Whey powder is an additive commonly used in spreads to prevent the coagulation of the product because it stabilizes the fat emulsions. It is manufactured by drying whey that has been heat treated to remove a portion of the minerals. It is used as animal feed and also by the pharmaceutical industry.

Levels of demineralization of this type of whey can exceed 90% making this ingredient completely useless in terms of nutrition. So dump this toxic brew of a spread and opt for healthier alternatives.

Banana Milk: The Newest Alternative To Milk‏

No longer do vegans or the dairy intolerant have to suffer! Alternative milks are becoming ever more popular. Sure, you’ve got your classic soy that exists ubiquitously in every cafe in the world, but now many establishments are also serving (sometimes homemade) varieties of almond, hemp, cashew, oat, rice and coconut milks.

But, are you still unsatisfied with these options? Perhaps you’re allergic to nuts, you avoid soy or simply are bored or the same old alternative milks. Well, did you know there is an incredibly cheap and easy-to-make vegan milk alternative that you can concoct with the ingredients in your kitchen? Meet banana milk.

High in potassium, vitamin B6 and pectin, banana milk is nutritious and full of filling fiber. It has a light, sweet flavor and costs pennies to make. If one banana costs $0.25, then your glass of banana milk shouldn’t cost much more than a quarter.

They are an energizing fruit that is especially great as a pre or post-workout snack. They can reduce muscle fatigue and fight off cramps and are very gentle on an unsettled stomach, which means they may be great for those who have trouble consuming a traditional breakfast.

Recently picking up in popularity, banana milk may be the cheap, accessible and nutritious milk you’ve been searching for. While making homemade milk substitutes is relatively simpler, cheaper and tastier than buying in the store, alternative milks are by no means cheap. A carton of organic almond milk costs $1.99 at Whole Foods, but has a lot of extraneous additives.
Homemade from organic almonds at Whole Foods, one site estimated that making an equivalent amount of organic almond milk at home would cost around $1.75, but takes at least one day of advanced planning. To make your own nut milks, the nuts must be soaked overnight, whereas you can just pop a few frozen bananas into your blender and have banana milk within 2 minutes. Intriguingly, banana milk is the only fruit-based milk, meaning some people might find it more easily digestible than nut or grain milks.

Gluten-free, raw, vegan and paleo, try making banana milk at home tomorrow morning!

Banana Milk (serves 1)
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
  • pinch sea salt
Combine all ingredients in blender. Blend until smooth. Pour into a glass and enjoy.

You can also add a spoonful of unsweetened cocoa powder and a dash of vanilla extract for delicious chocolate banana milk or soak some oats and add them to the blender and strain for homemade banana-oat milk. It’s like banana bread in a mug.

She Boils Bananas Before Bed and Drinks the Liquid, You Won’t Believe What Happens to Her Sleep

We’ve all had those restless nights of tossing and turning, staring at the ceiling, unable to get more than a couple hours of shuteye. The more you worry about not sleeping, the more your mind races, and next thing you know, the sun is peeking through the window. I’ve spent one too many nights this way and needed to put an end to my poor sleeping patterns. I came across this delicious tea recipe and it improved my cycle completely.

Irregular sleeping patterns or even insomnia can stem from several different things like depression, stress and anxiety. Almost every night, I would get into bed and my mind would be racing. Whether I was thinking about work, family, or simply the things I needed to get done the next day, I just couldn’t allow myself to relax. If your mind is active, chances are you won’t fall asleep.

Certain medications can also cause insomnia. Pain medications, antihistamines, and heart and blood pressure medicines are among the many that contribute to sleep loss. Yes, some meds might actually make you drowsy at first, but they can also trigger frequent bathroom trips or anxiety which can further disturb your rest.

Whether it’s one of these issues or maybe it’s that you’re addicted to your phone when you should be sleeping, something needs to change.

Banana Tea

Using only a couple items that are likely already in your kitchen, you can whip together a banana tea in no time! This organic, banana-infused sleep remedy works wonders and tastes so good. How does it work? Bananas, especially the peels, are loaded with potassium and magnesium. While magnesium helps prevent sleep disturbances, both magnesium and potassium work together to help relax muscles. In fact, magnesium is one of the best minerals for relaxation! Keep in mind, this recipe calls for 100% organic bananas. Bananas that are not organic are loaded with harmful pesticides and since we encourage you to eat the boiled peel, it must be chemical-free.

This tea takes less than 10 minutes to prepare and can be enjoyed every night before bed.

Ingredients
  • 1 organic banana
  • 1 small pot of water
  • a dash of cinnamon (optional)
All you need to do is cut off both ends of the banana and place it, peel and all, into boiling water. Boil it for around 10 minutes. Using a colander, pour the water into a mug. If you’re feeling adventurous, sprinkle the cinnamon into the tea. Drink it one hour before bed time.

If you’re worried about being wasteful, you’ve clearly never had a boiled banana before! After the banana has been boiled, sprinkle some cinnamon over it. Eating the warm, gooey fruit and its peel along with the tea will increase its soothing effects… Not to mention it makes a yummy dessert!

Why Sleeping Pills Are Bad

Out of despair, many of us have resorted to sleeping pills and with almost half of the American population suffering from insomnia or poor sleep, it’s no wonder. But here’s the thing: sleeping pills cannot help you long-term. They provide a short-term fix.

The majority of sleeping pills are a specific type of drug that induces and maintains sleep. They’re classified as something called sedative hypnotics. Among other sedative hypnotic drugs are benzodiazepines and barbiturates. Benzodiazepines—like Xanax and Valium—can be addictive and are used to treat anxiety disorders by increasing drowsiness. Barbiturates depress the central nervous system are used as anesthetics and sedatives.

As with all drugs, there’s a list of side effects that accompany sleeping pills. Aside from the likeliness of them being habit-forming, they can cause the following:
  • Constipation
  • Dizziness
  • Difficulty focusing and remembering
  • Stomach pain
  • Weakness
  • Uncontrollable shaking
  • Parasomnias (Doing things without realizing it… Scary!)
Sleeping pills also cause your breathing rhythm to slow down and significantly lighten. This means that if you’re already suffering from lung diseases like COPD or even asthma, these meds can be dangerous and even fatal.

How Sleep Deprivation Affects the Body

Getting less than eight hours of sleep is bad for your body. When I found out the consequences little to no sleep had on my body, I panicked!

When your body doesn’t get enough rest, generally less than eight hours, it suffers. Cognitive function—your long- and short-term memory—is seriously affected. Have you ever tried to focus on a task while running on zero fuel? I have and I know it’s near impossible. Processing even the simplest things seems challenging and your emotional responses to things become totally skewed. The scariest part is that sleep deprivation has been linked to serious health problems including obesity, diabetes and cancer.

It’s important to figure out why you’re not sleeping the way you used to and work on fixing it. I now look forward to this tea each night; it’s 100% natural, it smells and tastes great, and it has worked tremendously for me.

How to Get Rid of Head Lice

Head lice are a common problem among school going children. Seeing your child scratching head often is not a healthy sign. Parents panic a lot when they find their kids bothered by head lice. Most of the children get head lice at some or the other point of time. Head lice are also a problem for many adults. But how do you get these head lice?

What causes Head Lice?

If you think having head lice means you have dirty hair, it’s not true. Lice doesn’t see if your head is clean or dirty, they just need human blood to survive and they get this from any head- clean or dirty!

Head-to-head contact causes lice. This allows the lice to crawl from the head where they already are to the head that comes in its contact. Usually, children have head to head contact in different environments, for instance, in the school, while playing outdoors with friends, at friends’ home, tuition centre, etc. Mostly, children aged 4 to 13 years are affected by head lice.

Head lice doesn’t cause any disease but lead to extreme itchiness of scalp. Too much itchiness sometimes causes infection of the scalp.

Head lice can create a lot of other troubles, physically and emotionally. As soon as you notice the moving lice or nits in the hair, you should take appropriate steps to remove it immediately. If you wish to get rid of head lice, remember that it is a long term process. It is impossible to get rid of head lice overnight, though, you can find a certain degree of relief from head lice after trying a remedy for even the first time.

Facts about Head Lice and Lice infestation

On what and how long do head lice survive?

They survive on human blood. Without human blood they don’t survive. Even if they fall off the hair, they will find the hair and try to stick to it. However, they don’t survive for more than 2 days without blood.

Head lice is not a disease but lead to discomfort

Head lice are neither a disease nor cause any disease. Head lice can make you feel too itchy, embarrassed and uncomfortable. It creates a lot of discomfort and disturbs you a lot due to itchiness of scalp.

Head lice make the scalp itchy, dry and prone to wounds

Constant scraping and scratching makes the scalp very dry and itchy. This damages the scalp and leads to wounds, flaky scalp, etc. If not treated, this may also cause scalp infection.

Head lice infests even the clean hair

Having head lice doesn’t mean you are dirty. Neither your hygiene is compromised nor is your environment dirty. Head lice may develop even in the cleanest environment. Lice don’t care whether your hair is dirty or clean. So, don’t feel bad about yourself when you notice lice on your kid’s hair!

Head lice and nits

Even though you can eliminate the matured ones, it takes a lot of time to get rid of nits. Matured head lice and baby lice can be removed effectively in a few weeks. However, it is very difficult to get rid of the nits as they get struck to the hair and hair roots.

Head lice have high re-infestation rate

Head lice infest at a rapid pace. It is somewhat difficult to control the infestation quickly. If they fall off the head, they immediately rush for another head or hair for survival. Apart from this, without removing the nits, you cannot totally get rid of the head lice. If you don’t remove the nits, the nits hatch into baby eggs, grow, and breed on hair. It is a cyclic process and unless you kill and remove all the nits, you cannot completely get rid of head lice.

Using Anti-lice Products for Head Lice

When it comes to treating head lice, many people opt for anti-lice haircare products to get rid of the lice quickly. Some of these anti-lice products include,
  • Medicated anti-lice shampoos
  • Medicated anti-lice oils
  • Medicated lotions and cream rinses (cream rinses are not suitable for younger children)
  • Hair sprays
These products come handy to remove head lice. You can buy any lotion or spray recommended by the local pharmacist. Remember, you can use a lotion or spray only when you find the living louse. Otherwise, the sprays or medicated oils aren’t really needed. They are not much effective for nits removal.

However, to make it more effective you should use the product precisely, as instructed.
  • Use the product once a week or once in 10 days. Since it may contain chemical based ingredients or toxins, you can try it sparingly and on a holiday so that it doesn’t affect other kids negatively.
  • After applying the cream or lotion, tie the hair and wrap in a towel. It prevents lice from falling off and finding a new shelter.
  • It is recommended to stay away and remain idle until all the lice die and fall off into the wrapped towel. This is strongly recommended in case of severe lice infestation. This might take a few hours. Therefore, it is good to use such anti-lice products at night so that the dead lice may get collected into the wrapped towel and you may clean your child properly in the morning.
  • If you or your child doesn’t have nits on hair, you can remove the lice easily in two or three applications of such anti-lice shampoos, oils or other products.
  • Keep a watch and check for nits or any living lice after every 3 to 5 days. If there are nits or tiny lice, they may hatch and grow. So, using the OTC lotions may not be helpful to prevent the lice infestation.

General precautions when using OTC anti-lice products for hair

Some general precautions for using the over-the-counter products to remove head lice include the following
  • Follow all the instructions provided in the product leaflet, namely, quantity of the lotion, procedure to apply, how long you can stay with the product applied on the head, frequency of usage, etc.
  • Close the eyes (or if you are applying on your kid, let the child close the eyes) while applying such anti-lice treatments. You can also place a cloth over the eyes as an additional precaution to prevent the shampoo or lotion from entering into the eyes.
  • Make sure to wash or clean your hands properly with a disinfectant after applying anti-lice products to your hair or after removing the nits with hands.
  • Most of the head lice topical lotions carry an unpleasant smell. Your hair may retain the odor even after washing. So, you can wash the hair with regular shampoo or conditioner the next day, following the head lice treatment. Washing your hair with regular shampoo may not let the anti lice product work effectively.

Don’t use any topical application to remove head lice in case of,
  • Babies under the age of 2 years
  • Pregnant women
  • People with skin infection, allergy and asthma.
If you aren’t sure about using any head lice product, consult with a dermatologist and get the prescription. In fact, you may think of using home remedies to get rid of head lice as these products are not very effective in dealing with lice and nits.

Why the OTC anti-lice products aren’t really effective to get rid of head lice?

Most of the over the counter medicines as well as prescription hair care products doesn’t work effectively to remove head lice completely. These anti-lice shampoos as well as medicated oils meant for lice treatment give a symptomatic relief only. They can only kill the live lice and cannot damage the nits that become a menace. Although you can get rid of head lice by regularly using the OTC shampoo or prescription product, it is not a permanent solution to get rid of head lice. They cannot prevent the recurrence of lice. These solutions chemically react on the lice, which cannot prevent their infestation too.

In addition, these medicines contain toxic elements and chemicals that may harm your child. It can cause allergic reaction on your scalp and skin. Using the medicines also make the hair extremely dry and prone to infection of scalp.

However, you can try the OTC products to get rid of head lice initially when it is not that severe an issue. You can proceed with home remedies or natural solutions to get rid of head lice when and if you see one or two application of these products are not giving you the desired result of complete recovery. You may, in fact, use home remedies in the very beginning and forgo these chemical products altogether, especially in case of small kids.

The best way to get rid of head lice is using the home treatments and natural remedies.

Natural Remedies to get rid of Head Lice

There are many natural solutions, herbal remedies and simple at-home treatments available to get rid of head lice.

Combing to Get Rid of Head Lice

Combing is the best strategy to get rid of head lice. Combing the hair with fine-toothed comb or a lice comb is an effective solution to remove head lice, at least, when you notice the problem soon, just after lice infestation begins. As soon as you notice the lice infestation, use the lice comb to remove the head lice before it breeds. Instead of buying the plastic combs, you can choose the wooden combs too.
  • The key to removing the lice through combing involves, removing the hair from tangles and separating the hair into small sections.
  • Using a regular comb, detangle the hair and separate the locks into smaller sections.
  • Now use the fine toothed comb, preferably special anti-lice combs having very fine teeth. The comb teeth should be spaced tightly to trap the lice.
  • Always spread a white towel or paper below the length of the hair so that the falling lice cannot escape as you could easily see the black creatures crawling over the white surface.
  • You can comb the hair to remove the head lice in two ways, namely oil combing and wet combing. Moisture in the hair and scalp help reduce the movement of lice. In fact, lice cannot move in a sticky environment. So, removing head lice in wet or oiled hair is an easy process.
Here is how you can oil comb and wet comb the hair to get rid of head lice.

Oil Combing

Oil combing is the traditional method used for ages to remove head lice. This is different from regular application of oil to your hair. Oil is applied generously on the hair from root to the tip.

In olden days, people used castor oil or sesame oil for hair. When it comes to removing head lice, you can use any oil that doesn’t have the scented fragrance. For instance, don’t use the oils with aroma like almond oil. Aromatic oil is different from essential oil that has the aroma. Don’t confuse the scented oil with essential oil. You can use coconut oil, sesame oil or castor oil for the best effects.

These oils have their natural smell but are not too fragrant.
  • Detangle the hair and apply the oil. (Removing the knots helps separating the hair into small sections and comb accordingly)
  • Massage the scalp gently as you apply the oil.
  • Apply a generous amount of oil. It should look like as if you have soaked the hair in the oil.
  • Tie the hair for 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Comb the hair with a normal comb to make sure that the hair is free from knots and tangles.
  • Separate the hair into two sections, left and right. Split the parted hair into small sections to ease the combing.
  • Separate the hair into small sections and comb every part meticulously.
  • Take the comb and draw it down, from the top towards the end of the hair. Make sure that the tip of the comb teeth touches the scalp.
  • Check the comb for lice and remove them when seen.
  • After every stroke, remove the lice from the comb.
  • You can remove about 80 % of the head lice using the oil combing method. This includes both matured lice as well as baby lice, except the nits.
  • After combing, tie the hair loosely and wash it after 30 minutes using regular shampoo or shikakai. Shikakai is a herb good for cleansing hair.
How to comb?

Wet Combing

The process of wet combing is similar to oil combing. However, you should comb the hair after washing it with a shampoo.
  • Wash the hair with a regular shampoo or medicated shampoo. You don’t need any separate lotion or spray for wet combing.
  • Apply a lot of conditioner to keep the hair free from tangles.
  • Squeeze out the excess water, but make sure that hair is fully wet.
  • Wet hair controls the movement of lice; they can’t move freely and stick to the hair.
  • Comb the hair as mentioned in the steps for oil combing.
  • You can easily get rid of most of the matured lice from the head his way.
Repeat the oil combing or wet combing process once in every three days to clear the lice as they hatch periodically. However, removing the nits from the head is essential to get rid of head lice completely and to prevent the re-infestation of head lice too.

How long you should comb is determined by the type of the hair, length and extent of lice infestation. Those who suffer from severe infestation may not be able to remove even 50 percent of head lice in a single application.

Is combing sufficient to get rid of head lice?

As long as you don’t see the lice hatching the nits, you can get rid of head lice just by regularly combing the hair using the lice comb.

Home Remedies to Control the Infestation of Lice and Nits

To get rid of head lice, first you should remove the matured lice and baby lice. If you don’t have nits, you can try the natural remedies frequently to control the growth of lice. If you have nits, you should kill the nits and remove them completely. Remember, even one or two lice on your head can lead to re-infestation of lice. Following natural remedies, you can control the lice and prevent infestation.

1. Neem – Most powerful remedy to get rid of head lice

Neem or the Indian Lilac, sometimes also called margosa, is the best remedy to get rid of lice. It kills both lice and nits. Neem leaves contain a lot of medicinal properties. Topical application of neem leaves paste destroys the lice and you can remove it using comb with ease. Even if you have nits, using neem leaves is helpful. However, you have to remove the nits using a wooden nit comb. To get rid of lice, controls infestation and kill the nits by using neem in the following way.

How to apply neem for head lice removal?

Neem Paste

Neem paste is more effective than neem oil. It retains most of the medicinal values and removes the lice and also kills the nits.
  • Gather fresh neem leaves. (choose the matured neem leaves; they are more effective than the baby leaves)
  • Grind the neem leaves into a fine paste by adding a few drops of water.
  • Alternatively, you can boil the neem leaves and then make a paste
  • The paste should be fluffy and soft. Coarse or uneven paste makes it difficult to apply.
  • Make sure the hair is free from tangles
  • Apply the neem paste.
  • Ensure that the neem paste covers all the hair properly, including the length of the hair.
  • Tie the hair and wrap in a thin towel.
  • Let it stay for 2-3 hours.
  • Rinse the hair and wash the hair with mild shampoo.
  • You can also use shikakai to clean the hair
  • In a single wash, you can remove most of the matured and baby lice.
  • Apply neem paste at least 2-3 times a week until all the lice are removed
Neem Oil
  • If you can tolerate the aroma of the neem oil, you can buy the neem oil from the stores.
  • You can also make neem oil by boiling dried neem leaves in mustard oil or coconut oil.
  • Apply neem oil to hair and scalp
  • Wear a head cover or wrap the head at night and go to bed.
  • The oil should stay for a minimum of 4 hours.
  • Wash the hair
  • Wet comb the hair and remove the lice.

2. Sweet Flag for Lice and Nits

Sweet flag, also called Calamus is one of the staples used in many homes. Sweet flag has been a boon to the infants and toddlers. Sweet flag has also been used as an immune booster which prevents the infants from falling sick. Sweet flag is one of the effective natural remedies for head lice and nits.

Sweet flag appears like a thin, light and dry rhizome. It has a unique aroma. Sweet flag is a non-toxic remedy for head lice and you can use it for your child without any hesitation. In addition, it also aids in healthy hair growth. Sweet flag not only kills the lice, but also the nits.

Using sweet flag once or twice a week provides you healthy, black and lustrous hair with no traces of lice and dandruff.

How to use sweet flag for head lice?

Sweet flag is available in many stores selling Ayurvedic and natural medicines. It can be used in two ways, sweet flag paste and sweet flag smoked powder.

Sweet flag paste:
  • Soak the dry rhizome in milk for 5 minutes.
  • Rub the rhizome on a stone and extract the paste.
  • Apply the paste on the scalp and hair.
  • Tie the hair and wash it off after 2 hours.
Sweet flag smoked powder:

This is one of the time-tested remedies for head lice and healthy hair.
  • Burn the dry rhizome by directly placing the stick on the fire. You can use candle or gas stove flame. ( Additional tip: Inhaling the smoke of the sweet flag clears the sinus block and enhances the respiratory function)
  • Once it is fully burned, you can easily break the rhizome into small pieces and crush them into soft powder. When it could be done easily, you know you have burned it to the right degree. Make a fine powder out of it.
  • Alternatively, you can also grind the smoked rhizome into fine soft powder.
  • Add sesame oil or virgin coconut oil to the powder. One part powder can be mixed with two parts oil.
  • The smoked powder will dissolve in the oil and the color of the oil will become turbo black.
  • You can use it as regular hair oil or apply the oil before you take bath.
  • The oil kills the lice and nits. It protects the hair against lice infestation.
Still, you should use a nit comb to remove the nits from the hair.

3. Use Hair Dryer to Kill the Nits

While wet hair methods can kill the lice, hot air methods can kill the nits. You can use hair dryer and expose your hair to the hot air to kill the nits.

Dry your hair using hair dryer after washing hair with shampoo. However, don’t use the hot air treatment or hair dryer after you apply any hair lice product or chemical lice treatment. Most of the lotions, creams and sprays may contain flammable ingredients that may react when exposed to heat. So, avoid using hair dryer after getting a lice treatment using some OTC product.

4. Tea tree oil to get rid of head lice

Tea tree oil has antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiseptic properties. It is a natural insecticide. The terpinen in the tea tree oil is a natural anti bacterial agent. It also helps kill lice effectively. Not only lice, it can also destroy the eggs. Not only this, it can soothe and heal the irritated scalp that has become itchy due to lice infestation. Here are some ways to use tea tree oil to get rid of head lice.
  • Before you go to bed, add 3-4 drops of tea tree oil to 2 tbsp water or some oil and apply this to your scalp and hair. Next morning, comb the hair to remove the dead lice and wash your hair.
  • Take 3 tbsp coconut oil or olive oil. Mix 1 tsp of tea tree oil to this. Add the oil mixture to some shampoo and rub this to your scalp and hair. Wrap your head with towel or a plastic cap. After half an hour, wash off your hair with warm water. Wet comb your hair to remove the dead lice.
  • Add a few drops of tea tree oil to the shampoo or hair oil that you use and apply to your hair and scalp.

5. Vinegar for Head Lice Treatment

Vinegar is also an effective treatment for head lice but it doesn’t kill adult head lice. However, the acidic properties of vinegar are enough to kill the nymphs, the young lice that did not mature yet to lay eggs. Vinegar is also quite effective against the nits. The germ killing properties of the acid of vinegar dissolves the exoskeleton or the protective shell of nits. This makes them incapable of sticking to the hair. Once the nits lose their hold, you can easily comb them away with a nit comb.

These are some of the ways by which you can get rid of head lice using vinegar.
  • Apply pure vinegar to the hair, close to the scalp.
  • Then, wait for a few minutes.
  • Wet the hair using either water or water and vinegar solution (take equal amounts of water and vinegar).
  • Now use a nit comb to remove the nits that will get loosened due to vinegar acid.
  • Repeat daily till you completely get rid of head lice nits and the nymphs.

6. Get rid of lice nits with a wooden nit comb

Most of the remedies for head lice do not work on nits. Nits won’t fall off your hair like lice. When you have nits, combing with regular or fine toothed comb is not enough to get rid of the nits. You should use special nit combs to remove the nits stuck on the hair. This is a very painful process. Removing the nits from the hair is a very tedious and painful process. It may also damage the hair since the hair is pulled tightly from the scalp when you try to remove the nits using the comb. However, this is the only solution available to get rid of nits and to prevent further lice infestation.

If you killed the nits and find no traces of lice, you can cut short the hair to get rid of the dead nits. This is yet another way to get rid of the menace.

Homemade Anti-Lice Oil

Here is a simple anti-lice oil recipe. Using the oil prevents the head lice infestation and helps you get rid of lice quickly.

Things you need:
  • Neem leaves – 1/2 cup
  • Unrefined sesame oil – 3 cups
  • Dried neem flowers – 1 cup (if you don’t get neem flowers, you can use dried neem seeds)
  • Dried tulsi leaves – ½ cup
  • Calamus stick powder (1/4 cup)
  • Add all the ingredients to the oil and bring it to a boil.
  • Let it cool down and extract the oil after a few hours using a cloth or sieve.
  • Apply this hair oil regularly (1-2 times a week)
  • Wash the hair after at least 1-2 hours.
How to make it:

Regardless of the lice treatment you try (natural or any chemical treatment), make sure to wash the clothes and towels separately, that you or your child wore during the treatment.

Keep the hair clean and wash it at least twice a week. However, it is no guarantee for prevention of head lice. If the hair is clean, you can easily remove the lice and delay the infestation.

Don’t share the comb. Use separate comb for every single member in the family.

Regardless of the treatment you try to get rid of head lice and nits, you should regularly comb the hair daily to remove any of it that might have infested your hair. Also, killing and removal of nits from the hair prevents further infestation of head lice.

Honey Wine….. Drink of the Gods

Scientists believe that the first alcoholic beverage ever made was a combination of honey, and perhaps grains, that wild yeast and bacteria fermented spontaneously. Someone along the way decided to drink said beverage and voila!

This honey wine/ beer mashup was nothing akin to our modern understanding of mead or beer, but it was the foundation of some of the greatest beverages known to man. Over many years, the two have become distinct beverages. That’s probably because the official term for such a hybrid of beer and mead is braggot, and anything that rhymes with maggot was clearly not meant to be popular.

Mead is an ancient beverage made from just honey, water, and yeast. Modern versions can be sweet or dry, still or sparkling. It can be punched up with fruit or fruit juice (to make melomel), hops (to make miodomel), herbs (to make metheglin), or barley (to make braggot). Mead is very easy to brew—you simply mix the three ingredients and wait.

Like beer, mead is sometimes flavored with fruits, spices, grains or hops. But it’s generally higher in alcohol than beer and more in line with grape wine—typically between eight and 20 percent ABV. Also like wine, mead is produced in a variety of sweetness levels, from bone dry to lusciously sweet and can be still or sparkling.

History

A ubiquitous alcoholic beverage, everyone—ancient Greeks, Africans, and Chinese—all drank mead as far back as 3000 BCE. Mead holds particular importance in Norse mythology, especially in the legend of a fabled beverage with magical powers known as “Poetic Mead.” As the story goes, mythological gods created a man named Norseman Kvasir who was so wise he could answer any question. When he was eventually killed, his blood was mixed with honey, and whoever drank this honey-blood mead took on Kvasir’s power of intelligence. And it’s likely this myth that inspired Danish craft mead producer Dansk Mjod to make itsViking Blod Mead, which is flavored and colored red from hibiscus.

Mead is frequently consumed in Eastern Europe and Russia. Pretty much any country that produced honey has a history of mead production and appreciation.

Outside of Europe, Mead has been and continues to be popular in Ethiopia, where it’s referred to as tej.Customarily a home-brewed beverage, tej is usually flavored with powdered leaves of the gesho plant, an African shrub which imparts a slightly bitter flavor and preserves the drink, like hops do for beer.

Instructions for How to Make Mead

Now the part that you all have been waiting for, the steps involved in making your first batch of mead. You will start out making sure all your equipment is clean and sanitized. Anything that touches the must(unfermented honey and water mixture) should be sanitized.
  • Put a gallon of water into your stainless steel pot and bring to a boil for 10 minutes.
  • After boiling for 10 minutes remove pot from heat and add yeast nutrient, yeast energizer, and honey.
  • Stir the pot until the honey and water have mixed completely.
  • Hold the must at that temperature(around 170 degrees) for 10 Minutes.
  • Chill the must down to 80 degrees.
  • Take a hydrometer reading.
  • Pitch(add) your yeast into the must, stir vigorously for 5 minutes.
  • Place the lid on your fermenter with the air lock attached. Fermentation should begin about 24 to 48 hours.
  • 2 to 3 weeks later(or when fermentation is done) rack mead into a sanitized carboy.
  • Let it sit another 3 to 4 weeks.
  • Rack for the final time into another sanitized carboy and let it sit until the mead is clear(another 2 to 3 months).

Now that you have finished making your mead it’s time to bottle. For a still mead you will need to add potassium sorbate to stabilize. Mix the sorbate through out your entire batch then bottle. For a sparkling mead DO NOT add potassium sorbate. Use champagne style bottles for carbonated mead.

Here comes the hard part, letting the mead mature or age in the bottle. Mead will improve dramatically with age. Leaving it sit for 6 months to 1 year before opening is ideal. Be patient and it will really pay off. Enjoy!

Signs Your Body is Screaming That You Need to Do a Body Cleanse

Many times a list of symptoms reads like the human condition, with things that almost everyone experiences from time to time. What we’re looking for here is how often it happens. Frequently feeling fatigued, frequently getting constipated or experiencing indigestion, etc. It’s the frequency that matters.

If you’ve noticed any of the following occurs on a regular basis, you’re likely overdue for a detox. It may not be the cure-all, but in many cases it can at least improve the situation, and is the perfect starting point towards fixing it for good.

1. Low Energy/Fatigued

With the meteoric rise of energy drinks and the steady popularity of caffeinated beverages you’d think there was an low energy epidemic in full swing.

Trying to make up for a lack of energy with stimulants like caffeine and taurine only worsen the problem in the long run. After the pick-me-up there is often an energy crash that leaves you feeling worse than when you started. Not only that but these beverages usually act to burden the liver, further exacerbating the problem and sending you into a low-energy spiral.

If you wake up in the morning feeling sluggish, and pretty much stay that way throughout the day with varying degrees of lethargy, you should definitely consider doing a detox. A colon cleanse in conjunction with a detoxification program can help you lose body waste, feel lighter, and release store up toxins.

How a Detox Helps:

A detox can help you flush out the things that are preventing you from feeling energetic and having a pep in your step.

2. Constipated

Chronic constipation is a sign that something isn’t right in your digestive system. If you’ve tried increasing your fiber intake and adjusting your diet with limited results, it could be your body telling you that it needs a cleansing. Frequent Indigestion is also a common sign.

If you’ve accumulated years of waste in your bowels and colon, including impacted fecal matter and more, constipation could be just one symptom of a larger, more pressing problem.

In conjunction with a colon cleanse you introduce plenty of healthy foods like raw fruits and vegetables, and stop the intake of fried foods, and other unhealthy options so your body is getting a break, as well as getting the vitamins and minerals it so badly needs.

How a Detox Helps:

A colon cleanse is the order of the day if you’ve been battling with bouts of constipation. An effective colon cleanse will not only clear your colon of any stored up fecal matter, but will cleanse your digestive tract as well, improving your digestive health along the way.

3. Brain Fog/Unable to Focus

There’s one energy drink on the market that keeps promising to improve your focus. Perhaps that’s because there’s a serious need for many Americans to go on a detox program because of all the toxins they’re exposed to on a daily basis.

If you consistently find that in your natural state you lack the ability to focus and find yourself adrift in a mental fog, your body could be screaming at your to detoxify it, and this is its cry for help. Don’t misread it as a sign to use a stimulating drink or prescription drug.

Once you free yourself of toxins in the form of candida, heavy metals, and more, you’d be surprised how much better you’re able to focus, stay on task, and get things done.

How a Detox Helps:

A detox helps get rid of the toxins that are preventing your brain from firing on all cylinders. A candida cleanse alone can restore clarity, focus, and concentration by ridding your body of excessive and damaging candida fungus.

4. Feeling Depressed

The way you feel is largely dependent on your ability to feed your body with nourishing foods. Your mood can change with the right or wrong meal, and eating foods that are low-quality or even toxic to the body over long periods of time can put you in a depressed state.

The problem is that when you start to make changes to feel better and change your diet to include more life-giving foods, the toxins will block the nutrients from finding their way to your brain. Toxins have a way of nestling into the body and can remain there unless acted upon by another force. In this case a detox program can help to get your mind back in the right place.

It’s important to make the distinction between feeling down and depressed and having clinical depression. If you believe that you may be clinically depressed it’s important to consult with your doctor for the best help.

How a Detox Helps:

A detox may not be the cure for clinical depression, you’ll want to see your doctor for that. But as far as helping to avoid depressing thoughts, a detox can work wonders. It frees your body of stored up toxins that can keep you in patterns of negative thinking, and can inspire a new outlook on life.

5. Overweight/Trouble Losing Weight

If you’re not at your ideal weight even after several earnest attempts at weight loss, it could be that you were fighting an uphill battle thanks to all of the toxins in your body.

Turning over a new leaf and introducing the body to healthy foods doesn’t work as well as you’d think it does if there is waste in the body that is preventing the absorption of the vitamins and minerals these foods contain.

When you detox the body you are bringing things back to square one rather than starting at a disadvantage. It not only helps the body shed body waste and lose weight as a byproduct of doing the detox, it sets the stage for healthy weight loss with the adoption of a better diet and a more active lifestyle.

How a Detox Helps:

A detox cleans the slate if you will, and allows you to start fresh rather than swimming upstream by trying to be healthy while still having plenty of stored up toxins.

6. Trouble Sleeping

An excessive amount of toxins can keep you up at night, tossing and turning as your natural cycle is disrupted. Melatonin signals the body for sleep, but an excessively toxic body can reduce the amount of melatonin that is released, and cause a domino effect when it comes to getting natural, restful sleep.

When the body is persistently kept in an unnatural state, which is the case if you have too many toxins in the body, you may find yourself falling out of rhythm with nature. This will have you staying up late and waking up later than you need to, or feeling like you need more sleep than you actually do.

Try a detox before resorting to sleep aids, which will only prolong the problem.

How a Detox Helps:

A detox helps you by restoring your body to a more natural state. You can then be more apt to follow the patterns of the circadian rhythm, getting tired at appropriate times at night thanks to melatonin released by the body, and waking up with the birds feeling refreshed and recharged.

7. Sexual Dysfunction

It’s funny to think that many of the prescriptions filled and products sold in relation to sexual problems could be solved with a detox program. But your sexual organs are the same as any other organ, and their proper function can be thrown off when there are too many toxins wreaking havoc on the body.

Many who complete a detox program report feeling a stronger sex drive, and a better performance than before they started the program.

If you’ve never done a detox and your sexual performance and desire has gradually waned, it may not be a sign of aging, but rather a sign that you need a detox in a bad way.

How a Detox Helps:

If your reproductive organs aren’t getting the vitamins and minerals they need to do their job thanks to toxicity in the body, your physical performance will be affected and you may end up blaming yourself.

8. Unexplained Headaches

The source of some headaches is easy to identify, either from a stressful day or being around a lot of noise. But if you suffer from regular headaches with no obvious cause it may be just the time for a detox.

A headache is a pretty reliable way for your body to tell you that something isn’t right. It gets your attention and can bring your world to standstill if it’s bad enough. Rather than treat the symptom of pain, it’s best to see if your headaches are being caused by a toxic state.

Before trying yet another pain reliever or worrying that you’ll have these headaches for the rest of your life, try a detox program to see if the problem is too many toxins. Just be warned, your headaches may worsen during the detoxification process, but when it’s complete they should be gone, or at least greatly reduced.

How a Detox Helps:

A detox gets rid of impurities in the body that may be making you more prone to a headache.

9. Unexplained Soreness/Stiffness

Do you wake up in the morning feeling sore and stiff even though you didn’t do anything the previous day to justify feeling that way? If you play a rough sport or practice Mixed Martial Arts it makes sense to wake up feeling like you were hit by a truck. But what if you don’t have a good reason for feeling this way?

When you have toxins in the body that need to come out you are more likely to suffer from inflammation, because many of the foods and beverages that cause toxicity also lead to inflammation.

If you’ve never done a detox to flush these toxins from the body, they build up over the years and can lead to premature and undue soreness and stiffness in the body.

How a Detox Helps:

A detox can help reduce excessive inflammation, which in turn helps to soothe the aches and pains brought on by too much inflammation in the body.

10. Skin Problems/Allergic Reactions

You may have noticed that your skin has been having issues, and nothing that you’ve tried has been able to fix it.

A topical treatment isn’t going to help if the cause of your skin problem is excessive toxicity in the body. It’s time to get to the root cause and follow a proven detox program that lists skin conditions as one of the symptoms it can relieve.

One thing to keep in mind is that a side effect of doing a detox is often rashes and other skin problems, especially if many toxins are being released. These will subside by the time the process has finished, and should not be confused as a worsening of your problem.

How a Detox Helps:

A detox works at the source of the problem, ridding the body of toxins that can lead to rashes, outbreaks, and allergic reactions on the skin, as well as sneezing, coughing, and asthmatic conditions.
