Cat Parasite Linked To Mental illness, Schizophrenia in Humans

Everyone loves cuddling with kittens. But there can be a little-known danger lurking behind that furry little face and that innocent-sounding meow: a parasite called Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii).

T. gondii is the most common parasite in developed nations, according to Schizophrenia Bulletin. The cat-carried parasite can infect any warm-blooded species, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates more than 60 million people in the U.S. may have it.

Most people never suffer any symptoms at all. But in those with weaker immune systems, infection with T. gondii can cause an illness called toxoplasmosis, which can result in miscarriages, fetal development disorders, weeks of flu-like illness, blindness and even death. It has also been associated with mental disorders including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Now two more studies explore the mental health issues in greater detail.

E. Fuller Torrey of the Stanley Medical Research Institute and Dr. Robert H. Yolken of Stanley Laboratory of Developmental Neurovirology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine have been studying the link between infection with T. gondii and schizophrenia for close to three decades.

Their most recent study, published in Schizophrenia Research, along with researcher Wendy Simmons, compared two previous studies that found a link between childhood cat ownership and the development of schizophrenia later in life with an unpublished survey on mental health from 1982, 10 years before any data on cat ownership and mental illness had been published. Results of the analysis indicated that cat exposure in childhood may be a risk factor for developing mental disorders.

"Cat ownership in childhood has now been reported in three studies to be significantly more common in families in which the child is later diagnosed with schizophrenia or another serious mental illness," the authors reported in a press release.

In a second recent study, A.L. Sutterland from the Department of Psychiatry at the Academic Medical Centre in Amsterdam and colleagues analyzed the findings of 50 published studies to confirm that T. gondii infection is associated with mental disorders. The research was published in the journal Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica.

Results showed that an individual infected with T. gondii was almost twice as likely to develop schizophrenia. They also found an association with addiction and obsessive-compulsive disorder, but say that the findings should be approached with caution.

"In schizophrenia, the evidence of an association with T. gondii is overwhelming," the authors say in a press release. "These findings may give further clues about how T. gondii infection can possibly [alter] the risk of specific psychiatric disorders."

The Humane Society estimates there are 75 to 80 million pet cats and another 30 to 40 million stray or feral cats roaming the United States. Outdoor cats have an increased likelihood of infection with T. gondii. Cats excrete millions of infected eggs, or oocysts, in their feces, which can remain in soil or water for years.

Fortunately, there are precautions that cat lovers can take -- you don't have to limit your feline contact to watching cat videos on YouTube.

"Children can be protected by keeping their cat exclusively indoors and always covering the sandbox when not in use," Torrey told CBS News in an email. The CDC also recommends changing the cat's litter box daily, since T. gondii does not become infectious until 1 to 5 days after it is shed in feces. In addition, avoid feeding cats raw or undercooked meat.

Because toxoplasmosis is especially hazardous to unborn babies, health officials recommend that pregnant women avoid cleaning litter boxes, if possible, or wear disposable gloves and wash hands thoroughly with soap and water afterwards.

Avocados May Hold Key To Cancer Cure, Scientists Say

A new study shows that molecules from avocados target stem cells of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) – an aggressive form of cancer.

The findings, published in the journal Cancer Research, found that avocado’s attack stem cells directly whilst leaving healthy cells in tact.

These findings confirm what ‘alternative’ health practitioners have been saying for years about superfoods and cancer. Namely that foods with an unusually high nutrition value may have health benefits that can help fight disease naturally.

Time.com reports:
AML is an aggressive form of cancer that kills 90% of people over 65 who are diagnosed. Drugs that operate on stem cells are the most effective in treating the disease.
“The stem cell is really the cell that drives the disease,” said Professor Paul Spagnuolo, a researcher from the University of Waterloo responsible for the study, in a statement about the paper. “The stem cell is largely responsible for the disease developing and it’s the reason why so many patients with leukemia relapse.”
While the drug is still years away from being approved for market use, Spagnuolo is already preparing it for a Phase I clinical trial.

This Is When Your Bananas, Berries, and Apples Are at Their Most Nutritious

This Is When Your Bananas, Berries, and Apples Are at Their Most Nutritious

You already know that it’s important for your health to exercise regularly and eat your fair share of vegetables and fruit.

But if you really want to get the most out of your fruit, experts say there’s actually an ideal time in its lifespan when it’s best to eat it.

“Fruits are at their peak nutrition when they come off the tree or vine,” says nutrition expert Karen Ansel, R.D. But when fruit is picked, the nutrition starts to deteriorate. If it travels in a truck and sits on a store shelf for days, it’s slowly going downhill form there.

Luckily, a lot of the vitamins and minerals that you get from fruit don’t change significantly over time, says Gina Keatley, a certified dietitian-nutritionist practicing in New York City. She lists elements like potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, and copper among those, as well as the antioxidant capacity of the fruit.

The biggest potential issue for fruit over time, however, is the sugar content. While Ansel stresses that you should probably worry more about the sugar you’re getting from other sources as opposed to your fruit, the ripening process does impact fruits’ sugar content and even some other nutrients.

Here’s the optimal time to eat your fruit:

Bananas
Best time: Before they get spots

Bananas are high in starch when you pick them, and as they ripen, that starch turns to sugar, says Ansel. Over time, the banana will have the same amount of carbs and calories but will contain more sugar.

One benefit of eating a banana before it reaches the spotting phase: It contains resistant starch, which slows down digestion, can keep you feeling fuller longer, and can help you absorb fewer calories. “The less ripe it is, the more resistant starch it has,” says Ansel. But, she notes, you shouldn’t eat totally green bananas since…gross.

Berries
Best time: Before they’re mushy

Berries are higher in starch off the vine because of their lower sugar content at the time, says registered dietitian nutritionist Sonya Angelone, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. “If you want to get fewer calories from them, you would eat them when they’re green,” she says, “but it wouldn’t taste as good.”

The increase in sugar levels in berries are more pronounced as they get smaller, says Keatley, so blueberries may increase in sugar 150 to 200 percent from when they’re picked to when they rot.

Apples
Best time: When they’re crisp and tart

Just like with berries, apples increase in sugar and slightly decrease in nutrients as they ripen, says Keatley. “The best time to eat them would be just as they start to ripen, but the change is so slight it is more important that you eat it when it tastes best,” she says.

How can you tell with apples? Ones that are less ripe will taste tart, says Angelone, adding that apple varieties that are created to be tart also contain less sugar.

Experts stress that it’s best to eat fruit when it tastes good to you (that way you’re getting the nutrients out of it), but if you can eat it when it’s less ripe as opposed to close to rotting, you’ll get a lower sugar content and slightly more nutrients.

Worth noting: Ansel says frozen food is “surprisingly high” in nutrients because they’re locked in early on, soon after the fruit is picked. “Sometimes, you might actually be better off with something that’s frozen rather than fresh,” she says.

What’s in Your Hot Dog?

What’s in Your Hot Dog?

Ever wonder what goes into a hot dog? The answer may make you think twice about biting into another ballpark frank.

Want Cancer With That?

Hot dogs contain nitrates and nitrites because they preserve the reddish hue of animal flesh, but multiple studies have linked these preservatives to cancer. Even hot dogs marked “organic” or “natural” contain these carcinogenic chemicals. Hot dogs also often contain another suspected carcinogen: dioxin.

Tastes Like … Fear

When animals suffer from prolonged stress during transport and slaughter, the result is dark, firm, and dry meat. It’s way too unappetizing to sell as is, but grind it up and hide it among other animal bits, such as pig snouts, cow lips, and goat gullets, and voila! Frankfearters.

Mmmm … Bugs

The extra “ingredients” that have shown up in hot dogs include worms, maggots, rodent parts, glass shards, a lock washer, and a Band-Aid. One person even reported finding an intact dragonfly in one.

Put Your Dog on a Diet

Hot dogs are also loaded with fat: Oscar Mayer Classic Beef Franks have 13 grams of fat—5 of which are saturated—and only 5 grams of protein. By contrast, vegan Lightlife Smart Dogs have only 2 grams of fat—0 of which are saturated—and actually contain more protein (7 grams) than a beef hot dog.

What You Can Do

Share this image with friends and family on Facebook and Twitter. And the next time someone offers you a hot dog, say, “No, frank you.”

The Perfect-Skin Secret You’ve Never Heard Of

The Perfect-Skin Secret You’ve Never Heard Of

There comes a time in every woman’s life when she’s forced to question her choices. For me, that moment came last week, sitting naked in a photo studio with nothing but a makeshift garbage bag for a top as a 20-something photo assistant poured a full bottle of honey on top of my head. There’s nothing like feeling cold, sticky goo run down your bare face in rivers to make you take a step back and consider what led you to that particular situation.

According to the blogs that popped up in my search, honey cleansing involves ditching traditional cleansers in favor of washing your face with raw honey. Since this sweet stuff has antimicrobial qualities, the theory is it will keep your face clean, won’t strip away your natural oils, and can be beneficial in fighting acne.

My first thought was Well, that sounds batshit crazy — we should totally try it! I had absolutely zero intentions of being the one who actually embarked on the experiment. I’m usually adventurous — I’ll do pretty much anything to my hair, and I’m always game to try the latest makeup and nail-polish colors — but as someone who has struggled with problem skin for her entire life, I simply don’t eff around with my skin-care routine. After 20-or-so-odd years of experimentation, I’ve found something that works for me, so voluntarily dropping that in favor of slathering a thick, syrupy concoction on my face sounded like my idea of skin-care hell.

And, yet, there I sat, naked and sticky in that cold photo studio. How did I get to this place? What did honey wind up doing to my skin? Keep clicking to get the full rundown. But, be warned — I’m not sparing any of the gory details.

In my head, when I dreamed up this experiment, I envisioned one of my lovely team members taking the bullet — er, I mean, embarking on this wonderful cleansing journey. It came down to me drawing the short straw (or just everybody else being busy testing other products for their upcoming stories). At one point, I seriously considered just scrapping the whole idea, so terrified was I of the prospect. But, I read such glowing reviews online, and my editor radar was telling me this was a truly interesting topic worth exploring, so I sucked it up and took one for the team.

Now, according to the sites I read, honey washing is pretty similar to your usual cleansing routine. In the morning, you simply rub it on your face, then wash it off with your hands or a wet washcloth. Repeat the same process at night, unless you wear makeup. Since honey doesn’t have any makeup-removing properties, you’ll need to use either a facial oil or a makeup remover first, followed by your honey. I’m already a big fan of oil cleansing — I do it almost every night — so this seemed like a pretty easy transition to me.

The type of honey you use definitely makes a difference. As one site pointed out, all-natural means absolute diddly when it comes to this sticky stuff. I was advised to pick up only those bottles of honey featuring the terms raw and unfiltered— that means they are minimally processed, so all the antimicrobial goodness hasn’t been blasted out of them.

I also read that manuka honey was the absolute best option for the skin. I had every intention of picking up some of it — until I got to Whole Foods and saw the $49.99 jar of manuka sitting next to the $4.99 bottle of clover blossom. My inner cheapskate won that battle pretty soundly.

My very first experience using the honey on my face is documented in this picture. I didn’t test it out prior to our photo shoot, worried I might try it, hate it, and then kill the whole story in frustration. Let’s just say I was not impressed. I cannot stand the feeling of something sticky on my hands, let alone slathered all over my cheek. It was incredibly difficult to spread, and I could almost feel my pores clogging up as I slicked it on my face.

It didn’t help that my photographer kept asking me to spread on more and more of the stuff. Apparently, thin layers of honey don’t translate well on film, so I needed a big, thick, goopy amount on my face in order to make it look like actual honey and not just some sickly hued oil my face was secreting. My silk shirt and jeans were covered in large drops of the stuff from the rivers that kept falling off my face — hence, the naked-but-for-a-trash-bag-top moment that followed.

Worse still, when I tried to get the gunk off my face, it proved near impossible to wipe with a washcloth. I kept pulling on my skin and still had the sticky residue. This experiment was definitely not off to an auspicious start.

Needless to say, when I got home that night and prepared to wash my face, I was not in the best of spirits. Two whole weeks of this hell? I rubbed on my oil cleanser and reveled in its familiar, slick feel, a welcome respite from the sticky tugging I had experienced earlier in the day. I washed off the oil, patted my face dry, commenced whining incoherently in the bathroom for a few minutes (my husband knocked on the door, concerned), then slapped on some honey. Sticky tugging, round two.

I don’t have a washcloth at home — I’ve never been a fan of using a cloth on my face — so I just splashed some water on my face and prepared to dig in with my fingers to scrape this stuff off my skin. To my surprise, it rinsed off almost instantaneously, no rubbing required. Better yet, no sticky residue. I touched my face and was shocked by not only how soft it felt, but also how fresh my complexion looked. Maybe there is something to this…

I woke up the next day with a plan: I wet my face before I applied the honey, patting it lightly so the skin was damp, not dripping wet. I then applied the honey. Success! The honey-and-water combo let my fingers slide over my face without catching and tugging. It had almost the same slip as my facial oil did on my skin. I followed that up with my usual serum, moisturizer, and BB-cream combo (Ling Oxygen Plasma Potion, Oxygen Plasma Glow, and Urban Decay Naked Skin Beauty Balm) and was relieved to see my skin was doing just fine sans cleanser.

Now, starting around day three is when things got a little hairy. I began noticing quite a few zits crop up. Usually, my acne happens hormonally, and I had just gone through my regular monthly breakout, so when a zit appeared on my chin, followed by one by my mouth and another few on my forehead, I started to grow concerned. I’ve broken out before from testing out too-heavy creams, but this didn’t feel like that. My skin wasn’t aggravated — in fact, it felt exactly the same as it does when I use my regular cleanser. It was almost as if all the blackheads that had been hanging out on my face for the past few weeks suddenly decided to get together and throw a rager.

After a few days (five to be exact), my skin calmed down, and I’ve been breakout-free for the past week. But, after chatting with an associate who works for a noted skin-care brand, I started to worry about what those sugars could be doing to my complexion. So, I called up Dr. Diane Berson, an NYC dermatologist, associate clinical professor of dermatology at Cornell Medical College, and spokesperson for the American Academy of Dermatology.

While Dr. Berson says she wouldn’t necessarily advise her patients to swap out their usual cleanser for honey, she also says — provided you aren’t experiencing any sort of rash, abnormal breakouts, or allergic reactions to the honey — she doesn’t see the harm in using it, either. “Natural honey has some antimicrobial properties, but it’s not antibacterial,” she notes. “However, honey is very gentle; it has emollient properties, so it can be hydrating. It contains silica, so it can help remove oils from the skin. It might also contain ingredients that are similar to an alpha-hydroxy acid, so it could theoretically help keep pores unclogged, and the pH is appropriate to the skin.”

All that said, Dr. Berson notes that with something like this (as with all ultra-natural treatments) because they lack preservatives, you need to pay very close attention to the product’s shelf life — or run the risk of it becoming contaminated or growing bacteria. Bottom line from Dr. Berson: “It’s not something I would recommend to my patients, but if you are doing this and you feel good about it, your face feels clean, and you’re not getting any adverse side effects, then that’s fine — go for it.”

Technically, my experiment ended a few days ago, but here I am, still using honey to wash my face. My skin feels awesome and looks just as good as it did when I was using my regular face wash. That photo up there? That’s me without a stitch of makeup on, save for some tinted lip balm. Whether this will be my new go-to remains to be seen. After all, it’s kind of a pain in the ass to travel with, and I’ll need to see if this breakout thing was just a fluke or if it will be a constant.

But, I’m definitely willing to stick it out for a few more weeks to see what happens — not to mention I’ve started to find it kind of enjoyable. It smells heavenly, and it’s oddly soothing to do. This is also the first cleanser I’ve had that actually tastes pretty awesome if I accidentally get it in my mouth while I’m washing. Plus, thanks to the nice folks over at Manuka Doctor— who saw my Instagram post documenting my experiment and sent me a little care package — I now have some raw manuka honey to test out on my face. Gotta see if it’s really that much better, right?

Finally, I have to say, I kind of like being able to drop this casually into conversations with my friends. “Well, during my morning honey cleanse…” is definitely a conversation starter, although I’m sure they are getting really sick of my self-righteous cleanser preaching. This must be what Shailene Woodley feels like all the time.

Top 5 Homemade Skin Lightening Remedies You Must Try

Top 5 Homemade Skin Lightening Remedies You Must Try

Many people use skin lightening products to remove discoloration and dark spots that show up on their skin. Some people even use this product to try to lighten their complexion if they feel that it is too dark. Some ingredients that are contained inside of skin lightening products are effective for altering a person’s hyperpigmentation to a lighter hue. However, many of these products damage a person’s skin by thinning it out, making the bonds weak and creating permanent damage. In some cases people have been known to develop cancer from these products. People should use skin lightening products with extreme caution.

Believe it or not there are some homemade skins lightening remedies that work just as well as chemical based lightening products. These remedies are primarily made up of food based or organic ingredients. Even though this is the case, people should still make sure the solution that they are using does not damage their complexion.

1. Oatmeal based Skin Lighteners

Oatmeal is a popular food but it also a popular substance that is used on the skin. Oatmeal can be mixed with lemon juice, yogurt and olive oil to form a paste. This paste should be spread over the skin and completely covered. Once the paste has been covered it should be left to dry for at least 30 minutes. After this homemade bleaching agent has dried, it should be removed from the skin. A person should then add moisturizer to the bleached areas. This remedy has been known to work on some people’s skin but not all. Also, it takes many applications to work (if it does); at least a six month time period.

2. Milk, Lemon Juice and Honey

Milk, honey and lemon juice can be mixed together to form a facial mask that can be used for lightening skin. Again, these ingredients may or might not work on a person’s skin tone. This type of pack is easy to make and should be covered for no more than 30 minutes once it has been applied. Keep in mind that this remedy will more than likely work over time.

3. Turmeric based Skin Lightening Formula

Turmeric is a spice that can provide people with a skin lightening remedy that can brighten up their dermis. This substance is usually sold in a powder form and it can be mixed with besan, sandalwood and raw milk to create a paste. This paste can be applied to the face or any part of the body and be used as a lightening agent.

4. Tomatoes

Tomatoes are very acidic a lot like lemon juice. This vegetable can be mashed and mixed with other ingredients such as raw papaya paste or juice. Both of these ingredients are very acidic and they should be mixed with ingredients such as yogurt or milk that can neutralize some of the acid. While this type of remedy might not seem to work for some people it actually does. This ingredient does have the ability to alter some people’s melanin over time.

5. Orange Peels and Potatoes

Orange peels and potatoes are great products for lightening skin. These products are great for lightening the skin because they have minerals and substances that are excellent for lightening up the melanin. Potatoes can be mixed into a paste and peels should be ground up as well since this will help to make these substances easier to apply.

Keep in mind that skin lightening is a very tricky thing to accomplish. This type of process can be very frustrating because most people will not always get the results that they desire. Also, people should be realistic about the type of effect that they want to achieve. A person with dark skin should not realistically expect to bleach their skin nearly white (though it is possible) by using homemade remedies. The main thing is to use good judgment and common sense when trying this type of process.

Why Drinking Beer Is Good For Your Health

Why Drinking Beer Is Good For Your Health

Drinking beer in moderation is actually very beneficial for you.

One of those proverbs you see up on chalkboards in pubs says, ‘If you don’t drink, you don’t live longer – it just seems longer.’

Actually, that’s complete hogwash – beer helps you live longer.

And that’s just one of the health benefits of this marvellous, fizzy tonic. Here’s a few more (scientifically sound) reasons to pour yourself a beer RIGHT NOW.

1) Beer makes you live longer

Virginia Tech researchers found that regular, moderate beer drinkers were 19% less likely to die during a given time period than people who never touch a drop.

2) Drinking beer makes you thin

Drinking high-power brews such as Leffe could actually make you thin – as well as really, really pissed.

A new book, The Diet Myth by King’s College London Professor Tim Spector, claims that everything we know about losing weight is wrong – and that drinking Belgian beer is actually good for your gut bacteria, which can aid efficient digestion.

3) Beer helps to fight cancer

An ingredient in beer can even help your body to fight cancer.

Xanthohumol – a flavonoid found in hops – is an antioxidant which inhibits cancer-causing enzymes.

4) Beer keeps your brain sharp

A study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that women who had one alcoholic drink a day were less likely to find their mental faculties declining as they grow older.

5) Beer doesn’t actually give you a beer belly

A study at UCL found there wasn’t actually much scientific evidence behind the idea of beer giving drinkers the distinctive ‘beer belly’.

The researchers wrote, ‘There is a common notion that beer drinkers are, on average, more ‘obese’ than either non-drinkers or drinkers of wine or spirits.

‘The association between beer and obesity, if it exists, is probably weak.

6) Beer stops you getting kidney stones

People who drink a moderate amount of beer are 41% less likely to get kidney stones, according to a study published in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.

7) Beer has less calories than skimmed milk or orange juice

Never mind the fact that it’s pretty unlikely that you’ll drink 10 pints of skimmed milk, beer is LOW CAL.

Guinness released statistics showing that its heavy, dark brew is lower in calories than either OJ or skimmed milk.

8) Hoppy beers can protect against Alzheimer’s

Although they won’t protect you against not being able to remember what happened last night.

A recent study found Xanthohumol, a compound in the hops used to flavour beer, is able to protect the brain from degenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

9) Beer is full of vitamins

Who needs disgusting fruit smoothies?

‘If you analysed beer you would be amazed at how many super-nutrients there are in it,’ says Dr Stephan Domenig, medical director of the Mayr Health Centre in Austria.

10) Beer makes your bones stronger

A glass or two a day could help make your bones stronger – it’s rich in dietary silicon, key to building bone mineral density, according to a study in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture.

Unsettling Link Between Cancer And Eating Red Meat

Unsettling Link Between Cancer And Eating Red Meat

Do you enjoy red meat, as much as that hamburger means to you let’s hope your life means more. Red meat has been known as a caner cause for a rather long time now, but there is no known cause as to why this happens.

It has recently been discovered that cancer risk increases because red meat has an unnatural chemical in it that should not be consumed. The consumption of red meat can lead to many different forms of cancer including breast, prostate, lung, and colorectal. A group of researchers has recently discovered that this is all because of Neu5Gc, a sugar molecule that is found in things like pork, lamb, and beef. When you consume red meat the body detects the sugar immediately as a foreign substance which causes the immune system to attack it. This results to inflammation and if it happens continuously will promote the growth of tumors.

Humans are the only ones who have a higher risk when eating red meat.

When other carnivores ingest red meat they do so without problem. But because the sugar Neu5Gc is not naturally present in the bodies of humans it triggers an immune response causing cancer in the end. A person with a diet consisting of large amounts of red meats can cause the immune system to constantly produce antibodies and result in cancer. For people who eat red meat you should definetly think about cutting back and only eating this in moderation. 500g per week is the maximum one should consume no more.

Study Shows Some Beards Are As Dirty As A Toilet – YUCK!!

If you are in a relationship with a man with a beard, you’d better listen up.

A handful of brave men allowed Action 7 News to swab their beards, and the results showed some beards are as dirty as toilets.

Quest Diagnostics microbiologist John Golobic tested the swabs, and the results blew his mind.

“I’m usually not surprised and I was surprised by this,” Golobic said.

Several of the beards that were tested contained a lot of normal bacteria, but some were comparable to toilets.

“Those are the types of things you’d find in fecal matter,”Golobic said, referring to the tests.

Golobic recommends a thorough beard scrubbing and lots of hand washing.

“Also, try to keep your hands away from your face, as much as possible,” he said.

These beards were so dirty, that if the city were to find similar samples in the water system, Golobic said it would need to be shut down for disinfecting.

Now that’s just gross!

Nuts May Prevent Cancer, Study

Eating nuts can lower the risk of developing some tumors, according to a new study.

After analyzing data from 36 observational studies, which involved 30,708 patients, on the disease-preventive powers of nut consumption, researchers found that nut intake "was inversely associated with risk of colorectal cancer, endometrial cancer, and pancreatic cancer, but not with other types of cancer or type 2 diabetes. Overall, nut intake was associated with a decreased risk of cancer," according to a statement.

"This is the first systematic review and meta-analysis study estimating the association between nut intake and risk of cancers. Our study suggests that nut consumption may be associated with reduced risk of cancers, which may have practical implication. Aligning with the known beneficial effect of nuts on heart diseases, our study may imply that individuals interested in making better food choices to reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease can consider consuming nuts, after considering the caloric and fat contents of different types of nuts," lead author Lang Wu of Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and the University of Minnesota, said in a news release.

The findings are published in the journal Nutrition Reviews.

Vitamin B17: The Greatest Cover-Up in the History of Cancer

The phrase ‘Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food’ could not hit any harder, especially when it comes to the present discussion related to cancer and our present state of nutrition and health.

I do understand that venturing into this discussion may be touchy due to the fact that we have only allowed medical doctors to dictate the present cases, acceptable cures and latest treatments regarding cancer; while the everyday citizen without a medical degree has succumbed to it and the fact that they wake up one day and discover they (we) have cancer in some form or another.

As a nutritionist I feel that it is my duty to open up the discussion to everyone here; discussing healing through nutrition hasn’t been made illegal (yet).

I unequivocally stand by the belief that many types of cancer can be cured with food and earth elements, as well as cure many other types of illnesses that exist out there today. What I don’t want you to take away from this is the idea that I am encouraging you to leave your present treatment or your oncologist if you are currently battling cancer.

Even with this however, I do feel it is important to highlight one of the greatest cover-ups in the history of cancer treatment that happens to be related to a little known (to the greater public) anti-cancer remedy and treatment known as Laetrile, which is also known as vitamin B17.

One of the greatest concentrated sources of vitamin B17 can be found in the seed of fruit that many of us may have taken for granted: the apricot. The actual seed is found beneath the hard pit of the apricot. The anti-cancer agent found in the actual Laetrile B17 vitamin is known as amygdalin.

Question: “If B17 is so powerful and helpful towards cancer elimination than why is it not prescribed by modern Physicians as a treatment?”

Simple Answer: “A control for cancer is known, and it comes from nature, but it is not widely available to the public because it cannot be patented, and therefore is not commercially attractive to the pharmaceutical industry.”
 — G. Edward Griffin.

So once again the lives of many are held hostage at the cost of patents, certain doctor’s incomes and a possible sizable reduction of chemotherapy centers; that would thus reduce profits for the pharmaceutical industry. What makes vitamin B17 so powerful is the fact that it is comprised of glucose and hydrogen cyanide.

The way it actively destroys cancer cells is by the glucose ‘injecting’ itself into the cancer cell. Then the cyanide and benzaldahyde from the glucose create a targeted poison that kills the cancer cell. This natural form of chemotherapy was (and still is) considered controversial.

Many medical professionals claim B17 is toxic. Well, the last time I checked, having cancer (in any form) is toxic in itself and causes death daily. The only thing B17 is toxic to is cancer cells and a corrupt government.

So Here’s Where The Cover-Up Comes In

Although it was not approved for treatment by the FDA, doctors like John A. Richardson M.D. began using it “illegally” to treat patients at his clinic in San Francisco, and it was working remarkably better than orthodox treatments.

His success with laetrile is documented in Laetrile Case Histories: The Richardson Cancer Clinic Experience by John A. Richardson M.D. and Patricia Irving Griffin, R.N. However the team was later was forced to downplay the overall benefits of B-7 when held up against conventional cancer treatments.

The FDA then came out hard in its attack on Laetrile. The FDA considers Laetrile an unapproved form of treatment and ‘illegal’ for a practitioner to administer, therefore you cannot buy Laetrile in the US, though you can buy B17 / amygdalin in supplement form.

You can also gather the seed of the apricot and consume them at your discretion either as an anti-cancer agent or even in the midst of battling cancer (as reported by those who defeated cancer using B17).

“What would happen if everyone in the world ate right, and in addition to this knew about the healing effects of B-17?”

This question I’m sure is one that many of those attacking the documented benefits of B17 couldn’t bear to answer. Outraged by the B17 cover-up by the FDA and the AMA, for a 5 year period between 1972 and 1977 studies were conducted by Sloan-Kettering on the anti-cancer benefits of B17 to which it was concluded that:

  • Laetrile inhibited the growth of tumors.
  • It stopped the spreading (metastasizing) of cancer in mice.
  • It relieved pain related to cancer.
  • It acted as a cancer preventative.
  • It improved general health of the cancer patient.

One of the researchers on that panel, Dr. Kanematsu Sugiura was asked:“Do you stick by your belief that laetrile stops the spread of cancer?” He replied famously, “I stick.”

But then later Sloan-Kettering came out and fired one of its top spokesman on the subject, Ralph Moss for reporting on the findings. This passive-aggressive type of behavior when it comes to natural cures for cancer only hurts the general public at large.

But while it is one thing to hear about clinical trials of B17 and how it eliminates cancer cells, it is totally different when actual, real life people have cured themselves of cancer and are living to talk about it.

These are people who have fought back against the system, took control of their destiny and listened to their own bodies. To read one such story, that of Christopher Wark, click here.

The Legacy Of Dr. Max Gerson

I wouldn’t do any service or justice to try and tell the full story of Dr. Max Gerson in this particular piece. But what I will tell you is that his legacy is continuing through his daughter, Charlotte Gerson in San Diego. The San Diego location acts as an informative hub.

The actual cancer treatment center is located in Tijuana, Mexico and Budapest, Hungary due to United States laws on cancer treatment. Even if you are not 100% percent convinced that any of this has any validity, you still owe it to yourself to know about The Gerson Institute and what Dr. Max Gerson was doing for cancer patients before he was marginalized, stripped of his medical license and ultimately set up. To know more about the Gerson Therapy click here.

Being Proactive In Our Fight Against Getting Cancer

The best medicine is preventative medicine. I don’t have to read off a long list of statistics. If you’re an American, on the standard American diet or even an immigrant who has accepted the standard diet of present society, if you exercise very little and engage in other harmful bodily choices, then cancer is running after you: that’s a statistical fact.

There are some instances when no matter what you do, cancer will find you. Even if this is the case, it is no excuse to not be proactive and get an early start of ridding even the slightest possibility of getting cancer in any form.

As powerful as B17 is, there are also many other natural foods that have been shown to be helpful in warding off cancer. Consuming black seed (Nigella sativa), aloe gel, aloe juice, ginger, chia, cumin, flax, large amounts of raw fruits and vegetables, turmeric, goji berries, food mushrooms (white button, shitake, etc), Swiss chard, chili peppers, spirulina, wheatgrass, and sumac are all beneficial — as is regular periodic fasting.

And many other plant based spices and foods have been shown to be helpful in the fight to keep cancer at bay. Eating is one thing, how we live and think is another. Meditate daily. Don’t smoke cigarettes..

All we truly have in this world is the present moment. In this present moment, let us learn about suppressed natural treatments for not only ailments related to cancer, but on many other diseases as well. Why isn’t nutrition taught consistently in medical school?

It is something to think about. It is never too late to change. It is not too late to take the power back. Here’s to your health.

4 Weird Signs That You Have a Parasite

4 Weird Signs That You Have a Parasite

It’s common to think that parasites only infect people in less-developed countries or in unhygienic conditions. However various types of parasites are likely carried by millions of people in North America. Some estimates are as high as 40 percent of the population being affected by a parasitic infection.

Parasites can cause a wide range of symptoms and often go undetected or are misdiagnosed by Western medicine. Symptoms can be anything from trouble sleeping, to seizures, to pregnancy complications.

How do we get parasites?

There are many ways we can pick up unwanted stowaways:

· Undercooked meat
· Unwashed produce
· Contact with animals
· Transmission through sex
· Insect bites
· Infected water

As you can see, parasites are difficult to avoid since they come from so many everyday sources.

Weird signs that you might have a parasite

Feeling particularly sociable or reckless:

Evolutionary biologist Jaroslav Flegr, from Charles University in Prague, explains that he first learned about a parasitic ability to influence the behavior of the host by observing ants in the 1980s. He discovered that a particular type of flatworm could take over the ants’ nervous systems and access their behavioral mechanisms.

Recent studies show that a parasite called Toxoplasma gondii (Toxo) can have a similar effect on humans. It influences dopamine signalling to make us less fearful and more likely to take risks.

Waking up in the middle of the night:

Some experts theorize that parasites have their own rhythm and that they may become active in the middle of the night. For example, Taeniid parasites are able to stimulate the host to produce antibodies, which they then bind and use as a protein source. This type of activity may bring about chemical changes that cause the host to wake up and have excess energy at strange times.

Floaters or spots in the eyes:

Many parasites have been shown to cause vision problems, including Toxocara, Toxoplasma gondii and some associated with Lyme disease. Patients have even said they can see tiny worms floating in their vision. Other times symptoms can appear like an eye infection.

Chronic digestive issues, even with a healthy diet:
Parasites can influence the fluid balance in the gut and cause either constipation or diarrhea. Other digestive problems can include cramps, gas and bloating, or poor nutrient absorption. An invasion of foreign organism in the gut can also cause lowered immunity, making it difficult to shake off any minor illness.

How to prevent or get rid of infections

Good kitchen and bathroom hygiene is important for prevention of parasitic infections. Undercooked food is a common source for parasites, so safe cooking is an important practice, as is washing fruits and vegetables. Keeping the hands clean, especially in public environments is a good way to avoid parasites transmitted by contact.

Parasites are usually diagnosed through comprehensive stool testing, which is best done by a functional medicine physician. Natural treatments can include herb combinations, probiotics, diatomaceous earth, apple cider vinegar and essential oils.

If you have persistent symptoms that seem unrelated or remain unexplained by conventional medicine, a parasite test may help you find answers!

How to Use Sea Salt Water to Treat Acne

For those of you who live near the ocean, you may already be using one of our greatest resources for your skin. For the rest of us, or for those of you who are new to this idea altogether, you won’t have the real thing but can still take advantage of it all the same. What are we talking about? Pure natural sea salt — a top acne mediation that works in a very short amount of time, or at least for those that don’t have a severe chronic acne condition.

Most of the time, what we eat and our hormones lead to acne. Despite the myth, it’s not chocolate that causes acne, it’s actually the dairy and sugar in milk chocolate. Heavy oils that are refined, refined flours and refined grains, refined and added sugars, and processed food in general all also lead to acne. Our skin shows how healthy we are inside, and gut bacteria health has the largest impact on your skin, another reason to care for your face (and overall health) from the inside out.

But even if we are in good health, we all have a breakout occasionally. Maybe it’s stress, maybe we indulged in some really delicious foods we later realized didn’t agree with us, or maybe we’re going through some hormonal changes. After evaluating your diet and ensuring you’re eating foods that benefit the skin, managing your lifestyle, and avoiding eating added hormones, you should consider things to apply to your skin that will treat the acne topically. Though it develops from the inside out, once it’s there, it’s nice to know how to treat it without harsh chemicals.

The Ocean’s Secret to Healing Your Skin

Sea salt is an incredibly powerful acne medication that works by cleansing the cells and killing bacteria while also promoting healthy pH levels in the skin. Sea salt water straight from the ocean is one of the best ways to take advantage of this because it’s pure and natural and richer in minerals than tap water you’ll find at home, however, you can still mix a high-quality sea salt with filtered water and use that on your skin if you don’t live near the ocean.

Here’s how to do it:

*Note* If you can find Himilayan pink salt, it’s a fantastic source of over 84 minerals that will boost your skin health fairly quickly and is great to keep around the house in general. If not, use the best sea salt you can find at the store instead (NOT iodized table salt because most of the minerals are gone).

  1. Mix 1 cup of filtered very warm water (but not scalding hot) with 3 tablespoons high quality sea salt. Stir well with a spoon for a minute or so to incorporate, or you can blend it in a blender.
  2. Since acne can be painful, you don’t want to rub salt on your skin; diluting it in water and soaking a cloth in the mixture is much better.
  3. Dip a soft cloth in the mixture and put the entire cloth over the affected area, holding on for several minutes. Hold the cloth on your skin for several minutes (around 3-4).
  4. Remove and then rinse your face with the mixture (but close your eyes and mouth!) just to make sure it’s applied thoroughly.
  5. Rinse with plain warm water a few times, and pat your face dry.
  6. Do this in the morning and at night; if you are at home during the day more often, you can also do it up to 4 times a day for more severe cases.
  7. Be sure not to apply harsh exfoliating products that will tear the skin; it’s important to let the salt do the work and the healing at the same time.
  8. In a couple or a few days, you should notice the area starts to disappear and almost no remains will exist; it’s also very effective at preventing scarring. It’s also as natural as it gets!

Don’t Forget ….

If your acne still doesn’t disappear after this treatment, you may consider if your diet is a culprit. Common food allergens that cause skin problems include: dairy, gluten (and wheat), peanuts, yeast, and histamine-rich foods can be a culprit. You should also eliminate all high-glycemic foods (sugar, refined grains, added syrups and sweeteners) since they also trigger acne due to insulin swings that result in breakouts.

Eat a balance diet of vegetables, leafy greens, lean protein, and healthy fats for optimal skin health. And, it goes without saying, that whole foods promote clean skin better than any others. Probiotic-rich sauerkraut and kimchi will also help boost gut health to promote beautiful skin as well.

Give this natural beauty treatment a try if you haven’t already … and if you live near the ocean, definitely appreciate nature’s beauty remedy more often.

What Your Pimples Say About Your Health

Argh, those nasty breakouts. You scrub and you wash and you tone and you moisturize, and still they show up just when you least need them.

Look carefully at where you’re breaking out. There is a theory called “face mapping” that suggests the location of your acne could present clues about what’s causing it. Traditional Chinese medicine, for example, maintains that a weakness or toxicity in a certain organ or gland in the body can result in acne showing up in certain areas of the skin. You can use this theory to do some detective work on your breakouts.

UPPER FOREHEAD (Zone 1): You could be experiencing poor digestive health and/or your body may be having trouble breaking down food which can lead to a build-up of toxins.
Associated with the: Bladder and Digestive System
The Fix: Load up on antioxidant rich foods like berries, nuts and green tea.

LOWER FOREHEAD (Zone 2): Breakouts in this area can be triggered by irregular sleep, stress, bad blood circulation or depression.
Associated with the: Bladder and Digestive System
The Fix: According to mayoclinic.org, adults require 7-8 hours of sleep per day. However, the National Sleep Foundation says there is no “magic number” of hours. The number of hours of sleep you need varies across populations and the individual. Bottom line — get more sleep!

BETWEEN EYEBROWS (Zone 3): Pimples in this area can be a directly linked to consuming too much alcohol or a diet that’s high in fat. This area can also indicate a food allergy.
Associated with the: Liver
The Fix: Cut down on the partying!  Eat more fruit and leafy greens.

UNDER EYES (Zone 4): Dark circles in these areas is a sign of dehydration.
Associated with the: Kidneys
The Fix: Drink more water. Track if you are drinking 8-12 glasses per day. It will do wonders for your skin!

NOSE (Zone 5): This area can tell you if you are experiencing too many fluctuations in blood pressure and stress.
Associated with the: Heart
The Fix:
Manage your blood pressure by keeping an eye on it. Purchase a blood pressure monitor

RIGHT AND LEFT CHEEKS (Zone 6):
Do you have lung allergies or smoke cigarettes? Those who smoke tend to have acne breakouts on the cheeks. Also, you may see broken capillaries in this area. Acne in the lower parts of your cheeks may suggest dental issues like Gingivitis.
Associated with the: Lungs/Respiratory System
The Fix: Take control of your lungs and quit smoking!

SIDES OF CHIN (Zone 7):
Hormonal changes and stress can leave this spot imbalanced. Breakouts occur on either side of your chin right around the time of your menstrual cycle. Interesting Fact (from laurenconrad.com) Breakouts in this area happen on one side or another depending on which ovary is ovulating that month.
Associated with the: Reproductive organ or kidneys

BOTTOM OF CHIN (Zone 8):
This is a sign of digestive issues.
Associated with the: Stomach
The Fix: Try adding more fiber to your diet or detoxing.

EARS (Zone 9): You could be experiencing dehydration which could be caused from too much salt and caffeine. If you drink too much soda, coffee or alcohol, this area can get affected.
Associated with the: Kidneys
The Fix: Drink more water — limit your salt intake.

8 Ways Science Reveals That Hugging Creates a Physiological Response Equivalent To Drugs

8 Ways Science Reveals That Hugging Creates a Physiological Response Equivalent To Drugs

Hugs make you feel good for a reason and it’s not just the loving embrace that gives us that warm feeling in our hearts. It’s much more. It affects the entire body to such an extent that many scientists claim it is equivalent to the effect of many different drugs operating on the body simultaneously. Even seemingly trivial instances of interpersonal touch can help people deal with their emotions with clarity and more effectively.

1. REDUCE WORRY OF MORTALITY

In a study on fears and self-esteem, research published in the journalPsychological Science revealed that hugs and touch significantly reduce worry of mortality. The studies found that hugging — even if it was just an inanimate object like a teddy bear — helps soothe individuals’ existential fears. “Interpersonal touch is such a powerful mechanism that even objects that simulate touch by another person may help to instill in people a sense of existential significance,” lead researcher Sander Koole wrote in the study.

2. STIMULATES OXYTOCIN

Oxytocin is a neurotransmitter that acts on the limbic system, the brain’s emotional centre, promoting feelings of contentment, reducing anxiety and stress, and even making mammals monogamous. It is the hormone responsible for us all being here today. You see this little gem is released during childbirth, making our mothers forget about all of the excruciating pain they endured expelling us from their bodies and making them want to still love and spend time with us. New research from the University of California suggests that it has a similarly civilizing effect on human males, making them more affectionate and better at forming relationships and social bonding. And it dramatically increased the libido and sexual performance of test subjects. More frequent partner hugs and higher oxytocin levels are linked to lower blood pressure and heart rate. The chemical has also been linked to social bonding. “Oxytocin is a neuropeptide, which basically promotes feelings of devotion, trust and bonding,” DePauw University psychologist Matt Hertenstein told NPR. “It really lays the biological foundation and structure for connecting to other people.” When we hug someone, oxytocin is released into our bodies by our pituitary gland, lowering both our heart rates and our cortisol levels. Cortisol is the hormone responsible for stress, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

3. LOWERS HEART RATE

Embracing someone may warm your heart, but according to one study a hug can be good medicine for it too: In an experiment at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill , participants who didn’t have any contact with their partners developed a quickened heart rate of 10 beats per minute compared to the five beats per minute among those who got to hug their partners during the experiment.

4. STIMULATES DOPAMINE

Everything everyone does involves protecting and triggering dopamine flow. Many drugs of abuse act through this system. Problems with the system can lead to serious depression and other mental illness. Low dopamine levels also play a role in the neurodegenerative disease Parkinson’s as well as mood disorders such as depression. Procrastination, self-doubt, and lack of enthusiasm are linked with low levels of dopamine and hugs are said to adjust those levels. Dopamine is responsible for giving us that feel-good feeling, and it’s also responsible for motivation! Hugs stimulate brains to release dopamine, the pleasure hormone. MRI and PET scans reveal that when you hugs people or listen to music that excites you, your brain releases dopamine and even in anticipation of those moments. Dopamine sensors are the areas that many stimulating drugs such as cocaine and methamphetamine target. The presence of a certain kinds of dopamine receptors are also associated with sensation-seeking.

5. STIMULATES SEROTONIN

Serotonin flows when you feel significant or important. Loneliness and depression appears when serotonin is absent. It’s perhaps one reason why people fall into gang and criminal activity– the culture brings experiences that facilitate serotonin release. Reaching out and hugging releases endorphins and serotonin into the blood vessels and the released endorphins and serotonin cause pleasure and negate pain and sadness and decrease the chances of getting heart problems, helps fight excess weight and prolongs life. Even the cuddling of pets has a soothing effect that reduces the stress levels. Hugging for an extended time lifts one’s serotonin levels, elevating mood and creating happiness.

6. WELL-HUGGED BABIES ARE LESS STRESSED AS ADULTS

Want to do something for future generations? Hug them when they’re still little. An Emory University study in rats found a link between touch and relieving stress, particularly in the early stages of life. The research concluded that the same can be said of humans, citing that babies’ development — including how they cope with stress as adults – depends on a combination of nature and nurture.

7. PARASYMPATHETIC BALANCE

Hugs balance out the nervous system. The skin contains a network of tiny, egg-shaped pressure centres called Pacinian corpuscles that can sense touch and which are in contact with the brain through the vagus nerve. The galvanic skin response of someone receiving and giving a hug shows a change in skin conductance. The effect in moisture and electricity in the skin suggests a more balanced state in the nervous system – parasympathetic.

8. ENHANCE IMMUNE SYSTEM

Research shows that the hug hormones above are immuno-regulatory. All of this has an even deeper meaning on the way our systems work with each other, including our immune system. his also parallels with the way that hugs promote the relaxation response — they help to change the way your body handles both physical and social stresses, thus boosting your immune system naturally, to do the job it was designed to do!
