According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the following emergency procedure should be followed in the event of a bulb breakage, due to the poison gas that is released.

Before Cleanup
  • Have people and pets leave the room.
  • Air out the room for 5-10 minutes by opening a window or door to the outdoor environment.
  • Shut off the central forced air heating/air-conditioning system, if you have one. 
Collect materials needed to clean up broken bulb:
  • Stiff paper or cardboard
  • Sticky tape
  • Damp paper towels or disposable wet wipes (for hard surfaces)
  • A glass jar with a metal lid or a sealable plastic bag.
During Cleanup
  • DO NOT VACUUM. Vacuuming is not recommended unless broken glass remains after all other cleanup steps have been taken. Vacuuming could spread mercury-containing powder or mercury vapor.
  • Be thorough in collecting broken glass and visible powder. Scoop up glass fragments and powder using stiff paper or cardboard. Use sticky tape, such as duct tape, to pick up any remaining small glass fragments and powder. Place the used tape in the glass jar or plastic bag. See the detailed cleanup instructions for more information, and for differences in cleaning up hard surfaces versus carpeting or rugs.
  • Place cleanup materials in a sealable container.

After Cleanup
  1. Promptly place all bulb debris and cleanup materials, including vacuum cleaner bags, outdoors in a trash container or protected area until materials can be disposed of. Avoid leaving any bulb fragments or cleanup materials indoors.
  2. Next, check with your local government about disposal requirements in your area, because some localities require fluorescent bulbs (broken or unbroken) be taken to a local recycling center. If there is no such requirement in your area, you can dispose of the materials with your household trash.
  3. If practical, continue to air out the room where the bulb was broken and leave the heating/air conditioning system shut off for several hours.

Although beards have a bad rap as being a breeding ground for bacteria, new research has discovered that your facial hair may actually fight infection, according to a press release from the BBC.

Society has long debated whether it’s healthy to have a beard. Detractors point to that rather disturbing discovery that “facial hair could be dirtier than a toilet bowl,” as the New York Post put it. After swabbing a series of beards and analyzing their bacteria content, microbiologist John Golobic concluded that some of the bacteria were “the kind of things that you find in feces.”

Let’s face it — beards aren’t always the most hygienic thing on your body.

The BBC also pointed to a 2014 study in the Journal of Hospital Infection, wherein researchers swabbed the faces of 408 health-care workers — some bearded, some not. Those without beards were more likely to be carrying methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, an infection-causing staph bacteria that’s become resistant to many antibiotics.

The researchers suggested a possible explanation for their findings: that shaving might create small abrasions on the skin, “which may support bacterial colonization and proliferation,” according to the BBC.

Beards may also protect your face from the sun. A 2011 study from the University of Southern Queensland in Australia found that beards offer UV protection, with longer hair shielding the skin a bit more effectively. That’s helpful for places like your upper lip, where it’s easy to forget to apply an SPF product.

Beards may not be as bad as some people think. In fact, a doctor found that it may pave the way for the development of new antibiotics in the future.

In a new experiment, microbiologist Dr. Adam Roberts from the University College London discovered that beards carry bacteria that have antibiotic properties.

Roberts put beard swabs of different men to the test. He was able to detect over 100 different bacterial growths from the specimens. The thing is not all the bacteria were harmful.

Curiously, Roberts observed a microbe that looked as if it was killing other bacteria. He then isolated that microbe and tested it against a type of Escherichia coli that causes urinary tract infections.

This resulted in the microbes killing the bacterium with much efficiency.


Australian researchers discovered, beards actually make you less rugged — in the best way possible. Beards provide as much UV protection as sunscreen.

The researchers placed some mannequins in the hot Australian sun, and outfitted some with beards. After measuring how much radiation each face had absorbed, they found that beards are capable of providing a sun protection factor (SPF) of up to 21 — better than your average sunscreen, which comes in at SPF 15.

Beards are good for more than just the sun. Facial hair collects allergens that would otherwise make their way to your nose and mouth, helping keep you sneeze free. They also protect against wind damage, which dries your skin out and ages prematurely. To think, underneath their beards, those rugged mountain man types have faces as smooth as a baby’s bottom.

A beard can actually function as a fountain of youth because of all of the protection it offers. Since facial hair keeps you’re skin clear of cancerous blemishes and having a beard means you reduce the amount of acne and discoloration on your skin, your skin will stay healthy for longer. The ability of a beard and moustache to keep allergens out of your system will also improve your overall health. In this way, beards work to keep you not only looking younger but feeling younger as well.

When your beard and mustache help to keep airborne bacteria out of your mouth, they are also working together to reduce your chances of getting gum disease. There comes a point in every person’s life when he or she parts ways with someone: ex, friend and anyone in between.

Upon first meeting this person, there’s a sweet beginning, but once you come to really know each other and grow comfortable, you suddenly realize that the relationship no longer brings any particular value to your life and is perhaps, even detrimental.

Sometimes, we hold on to people purely based on how long we have known them. Time can tie people together, but if you feel as though there’s nothing substantial keeping you connected, time is not a strong enough reason to hold on to something that’s simply no longer worth holding onto.

We grow complacent with people once we’re comfortable with them. But, hanging onto someone for the pure sake of it and because you don’t know anything else isn’t a good enough reason.

Fear is another reason why we can’t move on. There’s the fear of being alone and not being able to find someone else; fear of someone using our deepest and darkest secrets as blackmail; fear of the hate and tension that will ensue; fear of regret once someone is gone.

Sometimes, things are better left as mere memories. You can try to change things back to how they were or try to create things to be the way you want them, but you’ll never be truly happy because it’ll never be anything like how things once were.

If anything, there’s now too much pressure and expectation in the air to recreate what you both once had. Instead, hold on to and cherish the memories, but move forward. Be thankful for what a friendship or relationship brought you and taught you.

Beyond that, friendships and relationships — whilst they do have their downfalls and can require fixing — should essentially come naturally.

If a person isn’t bringing something significant to your life, not treating you how you’d like or isn’t the type of person you want him or her to be, it’s a clear sign that you need distance.

While it would be selfish of you to not accept a person for whom he or she is, it would be unfair for you to have to endure a friendship or relationship that isn’t cultivating a better you.

Now that we have come to ascertain why you may be holding on, let’s make it clear why you need to let go:


1. Let go because things are not the same anymore.
People simply grow a part, which is perfectly normal. You realize you want different things, no longer share the same interests, no longer understand and no longer connect.

Sometimes, it’s a matter of accepting that it takes time to let go, rather than holding on to something that just can’t be brought back, was lost a long time ago or perhaps, was never really there at all.

It’s difficult to hold on to people in life, but remember that you’re destined to meet different people along your journey who will bring you happiness, sorrow, pain and joy.

2. Let go because the trust and loyalty isn’t there.
If you know in your heart that you can’t trust this person and he or she cannot be loyal, then you need to ask yourself why this person is in your life. Trust and loyalty are the foundation of any friendship and relationship.

If they’re not present, it may only lead to paranoia, frustration, tension and anger that you’re better off without feeling.

Find someone with whom you can share your deepest darkest secrets and you know that after walking away, his or her lips will remain tightly sealed. Find someone whose faithfulness to you will be unquestionable because his or her actions, rather than empty promises, bring you a peace of mind.

3. Let go because you are unclear of where things stand.
Engaging in an undefined friendship or relationship is confusing because you don’t know what you mean to the person, if anything at all. If the person can’t make you feel as though you’re significant, reflect on why you’re allowing someone to treat this way.

Be in the company of someone who is proud to have you in his or her life and will make that known to you and the rest of the world. Be in the company of someone who won’t gamble with your heart and mind simply because he or she knows you’re not going anywhere.

4. Let go if the friendship or relationship is damaging to you.

If the friendship/relationship is making you unhappy or miserable, it’s time to bid the person farewell. We must not allow ourselves to feel trapped and used to being treated far less well than we deserve.

If someone is putting you down, competing with you, not paying attention to you, not caring about you, abusing you, embarrassing you in front of others, making you question yourself, belittling you or simply just not caring about you, remove the negativity from your life as soon as possible. Respect yourself enough to be able to walk away.


5. Let go if you simply don’t see eye to eye.
It is hard to make a relationship work if you can’t ever agree or see each other’s points of view. If the one thing you can agree on is that neither of you can agree, it might be time to walk away.

In many friendships and relationships, people come together through unlikely chances, through their differences and lack of similarities. Therefore, it can work, but if you find that it’s a significant source of many of your disputes and tensions, get out now.

6. Let go if you’re the one fighting to make it work.
If your relationship makes you feel as though you’re the only one putting in effort, time and love, reflect on whether or not it’s worth it. If someone truly loves you, cares for you or wants and needs you, the person will never allow you to invest disproportionate effort.

Find someone who makes you feel worthwhile and worthy. Find someone who fights to have you in his or her life. Find someone who knows how lucky he or she is to have you.

Ask yourself whether you can do without the relationship or whether it’s something you unquestionably want and deserve. Sometimes, there’s this belief that we can be “too fussy” with what we want from others in life, but then again, why should we settle for anything less than happiness?

Don’t ever allow someone to make you feel needy for wanting someone who will love, care and support you, someone who will listen and give you insightful advice, someone who wants the same things, someone you can trust and will be loyal to you, someone who believes so strongly in you and your capabilities. Victoire found herself trapped in a world where thin bodies dominate. As she explains, “nobody told me I had to lose weight. But I was told: in September, you’ll be doing the Fashion Weeks, the clothes are size 32-34, and you’ll have to fit in them.”


Then, he started to basically starve herself, which resulted in losing 22 pounds in 2 months. Her diet was based on three apples a day combined with sparkling water, allowing her to feel full. A piece of chicken of fish was the only “real” food she consumed, and this was allowed only once weekly.

This strategy seemed very successful and Victorie, who is 5’10”, weighed only 103 pounds. She was booked for back-to-back haute couture shows in Milan, New York, and Paris and worked for prestigious brands, such as Miu Miu and Alexander McQueen. Moreover, she became one of the top 20 demanded models!

However, this glitter was hiding a painful truth. Victorie was suffering from anorexia, she started losing her hair, her pulse was weak, and she had osteoporosis and stopped getting her period. On the top of that, the used to faint very often between several fashion shows.


The worst part of this situation was that her pictures have been manipulated. According to Victorie, “They added weight to my thighs and cheeks. The girls working there today will probably say I’m lying. After this unpleasant situation, Victorie decided to end her modeling career. Does Your Eye Ever Twitch? Doctors Say THIS Is What It Means

A twitchy eye can be extremely annoying and uncomfortable. You’ve likely experienced it many times before and it always seems to come out of nowhere. One minute everything is fine and normal and seconds later it feels like your eye is about to jump out of the socket. The nerve or muscle or whatever the heck it may be is spasming and shaking all around, making you squint and worry about what is actually going on in there. If you have ever wondered what is causing your eye to twitch and whether or not you should be worried about it, here is the answer.

There are several different types of eye twitching and each one is considered a separate condition from the rest. They are all caused by different things and the most common type, that you have likely experienced, is called eyelid twitching or myokymia. The Mayo Clinic describes it as “affect[ing] only the eyelid. It can involve either the upper or lower lid, but only one eye at a time. The eye twitching can range from barely noticeable to bothersome. The twitching usually goes away within a short time but may recur over a few hours, days or longer.” The twitching is caused by tiny muscles and nerves located around your eye. Just like any other muscle that suddenly spasms out of control, the ones in your eye can as well. There is nothing serious about this type of twitch and it’s relatively normal.

A less common type of twitch you should be worried about is called a blepharospasm, which is when a twitching in both of your eyelids gradually increases and worsens. It gets to a point where the intensity and strain of the twitching becomes too much and may even lead to near or complete blindness. However, this is a very rare occurrence and if it ever happens to you, see a doctor immediately.

While doctors and scientists have yet to agree on what exactly causes our eyelids to twitch, they have narrowed down some of the main factors that contribute to it. In fact, it’s the opposite and normal, many people experience it throughout their lifetime.


Here are a few basic things you can to to cut down on the frequency and severity of when it happens to you:

1) Relax and De-stress- The less stressed you feel, the less likely you are to end up experiencing an eye twitch. Stress is believed to be one of the main causes of myokymia and it’s also an aggravating factor which will make your twitch stronger and thus worse.

2) Get a Full Night’s Sleep- A lack of good, quality sleep can wreak havoc on your body, especially your eyes. Having to focus and re-focus a countless amount of times each day is hard on your eye muscles and they get fatigued just like any other muscle in your body. Not getting enough sleep also adds further stress to our lives and bodies, so rest your eyes and try to get as much sleep as possible.

3) Caffeine- If you really have eye twitch problems, cut the caffeine out of your diet because it can trigger them. Caffeine also causes our bodies to release serotonin and noradrenaline, two chemicals that stimulate and excite our nerves, which an lead to more frequent and severe eye spasms.

These three factors all contribute to eyelid twitching, but there may be other potential causes. If you have an eye twitch issue that is extremely annoying, frequent, and bothersome, there are medications that can help with it. Botox has also been shown to be effective at managing and controlling the muscles around the eye and can help with twitching. However, most of the time the spasms will go away on their own and are not so severe that they greatly impact our quality of life. Finally, there are no neurological problems associated with a twitchy eyelid, so don’t worry about experiencing them or freak out when they happen.
