Skinny jeans may be good to wear and look great for some for fashion sake, but these fashion items can cause a person a runway to the hospital. We know that fashion often takes priority over comfort, because who needs to be able to walk properly when you can look this good?

Fashion Trend Might Cause Nerve Damage:Tight Skinny Jeans Health Risk

However, doctors warned that wearing skinny jeans could cause nerve damage called Meralgia Paresthetica, a chronic neurological disorder where there is a compression of the nerve that supplies sensation to the skin surface of your thigh.

Dr Karen Boyle, a urologic surgeon from Washington DC said that “This disorder occurs when one of the nerves on the outer part of the thigh compresses and pressure on in causes symptoms of tingling and numbness and pain.”

Other symptoms include occasional aching in the groin area or pain spreading across the buttocks, a burning sensation in the thighs as well as hypersensitivity to heat.

Dr. Boyle added that the fashion combination of skinny jeans and high heels increases the chances of developing meralgia paresthetica.

“Because the pelvis tilts it can further accentuate the pressure that’s placed on those nerves,” she explained. If not corrected the condition can become serious and potentially lead to permanent damage.

In most cases, meralgia paresthetica can be relieved with conservative measures, such as wearing looser clothing. However, in severe cases, treatment may include medications to relieve discomfort and surgery may be needed to decompress the nerve or as a last resort to remove it. The latter treatment results in permanent numbness in the area.
