Soda Shortens Your Lifespan By 5 Years

Did you know drinking canned soda can shorten your lifespan by 5 years? Read below to find out what your doing wrong!

Drinking sugar-sweetened soda and other sugary drinks on a regular basis has been linked with weight gain, diabetes and heart attacks among other health problems. Can soda can actually shorten your life though. According to a recent study by the University of California, San Francisco found that regularly drinking a can of soda can shorten your telomeres. These are the protein caps on the end of chromosomes that protect your DNA from damage.


“Teleomere length naturally shortens with your biological age,” says Cindy Leung, Sc.D., a postdoctoral research at the University, who led the study. “When telomeres get too short, the cell can malfunction and die.” Leung and her team found that soda drinking appears to hasten this natural shortening, which has also been linked with the development of heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

5000 people participated in the study. They took blood samples and despite being free from diabetes and heart disease, the person who drank the most had shorter telomeres than those who limit consumption.




More research has been done on soda at Harvard School of Public Health.The experts found that
Drinking one or two cans a day increases the risk of type 2 diabetes by 26%.

Men who had a can a day for 20 years had 20% higher heart attack risk than those who didn’t drink them.
A can a day for two decades boosted the risk of gout by 75% in women. A similar risk was found in men as well.
Decreasing sugary drink consumption could reduce the obesity epidemic.

Many people choose to drink soda even though they know they aren’t healthy. Tons of people choose soda over water. Even though the research was done in a well-respected environment, it remains a observational type of study. This study should be considered serious though. This bad habit can cause many bad things to happen to you, so why do we keep ingesting it? Maybe it is time to switch to something new, just to be on the safe side.
